Editorial: Treatment of Early Childhood Callous-Unemotional Traits: What Do We Know and Where Do We Go from Here?

Callous-unemotional (CU) traits, characterized by lack of remorse, guilt, or empathy, are represented in DSM-5 under the limited prosocial emotions specifier for conduct disorder. Research suggests that some interventions for conduct problems are less effective for children with higher levels of CU traits,1 and few interventions have been shown to reduce CU traits. Specifically, behavioral parenting interventions, evidence-based treatments for conduct problems, have been shown to be less effective for children with higher levels of CU traits.2 Although research suggests high comorbidity of int

Risk-Taking, Delay Discounting, and Time Perspective in Adolescent Gamblers: An Experimental Study.

Previous research has demonstrated that adult pathological gamblers (compared to controls) show risk-proneness, foreshortened time horizon, and preference for immediate rewards. No study has ever examined the interplay of these factors in adolescent gambling. A total of 104 adolescents took part in the research. Two equal-number groups of adolescent non-problem and problem gamblers, defined using the South Oaks Gambling Screen-Revised for Adolescents, were administered the Balloon Analogue Risk Task (BART), the Consideration of Future Consequences (CFC-14) scale, and the Monetary Choice Questi

Characteristics of prescription opioid abusers in treatment: prescription opioid use history, age, use patterns, and functional severity.

Research has raised the possibility that the length of time one engages in nonmedical use of prescription opioids may be associated with abuse of other drugs, more risky drug-related behavior, and more severe functional problems. This study drew on data from the Addiction Severity Index-Multimedia Version Connect system. A total of 55,341 client assessments at substance abuse treatment centers were analyzed to help understand the impact of length of time one has abused opioids on the patterns of abuse and functional problems. From this larger sample, 5686 individuals who had abused a prescript

Gender-specific play behavior in relation to autistic traits and behavioral difficulties at the age of seven in the SELMA study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood gender nonconformity is related to psychological distress and behavioral difficulties. Similarly, there is evidence for a link between gender nonconformity, or gender dysphoria in some studies, and autism spectrum disorder and related traits. Our knowledge on those associations mostly originates from clinical populations, which might lead to overestimation. Thus, this study aimed to assess associations between gender nonconformity and behavioral difficulties in a population-based study. METHODS: In the Swedish Environmental Longitudinal, Mother and Child, Asthma and Alle

A Longitudinal Quasi-Experimental Evaluation of a Cognitive-Behavioral Intervention in Teachers: Changes in Psychosocial Risks, Burnout, Depression, and Salivary Cortisol.

Burnout is recognized in the ICD-11 as an occupational phenomenon resulting from chronic work-related stress. In educational settings, psychosocial risks-particularly high job demands and insufficient resources-have been associated with burnout, depressive symptoms, and physiological stress dysregulation. This longitudinal quasi-experimental study examined changes associated with participation in a multicomponent cognitive-behavioral intervention among teachers. The sample comprised 66 primary and secondary school teachers (30 training, 36 non-training), further stratified according to high or

Social determinants associated with mental health problems in youth with intellectual disability: a systematic literature review.

Individuals with intellectual disability (ID) face a higher risk for developing mental health problems. Recent research emphasizes the relevance of social determinants of mental health (SDOMH) in relation to this risk. This review aims to synthesize evidence on the associations between SDOMH and mental health in youth with ID, focusing on risk and protective factors across demographic, economic, social, and neighborhood domains. A systematic search of multiple databases identified 51 relevant studies, including 36 cross-sectional and 15 longitudinal studies. Using a framework-led approach, the

Migraine and its association with pubertal maturation and behavioral traits among adolescent girls.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if the ages at pubertal milestones are associated with the prevalence of adolescent migraine. BACKGROUND: Migraine headaches are a common disease in adolescent girls. Past studies have evaluated the relationship between age of onset of menarche and migraine headache, but none have studied earlier pubertal milestones such as thelarche and pubarche. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, a previously validated questionnaire was administered to girls (15-18 years) in Breast Cancer and the Environment Research Program puberty cohort to ascertain if they met criteria for

A Randomized Community-Based Trial of Behavior Therapy vs. Usual Care for Adolescent ADHD: Secondary Outcomes and Effects on Comorbidity.

Though behavior therapy (BT) for ADHD in adolescence is evidence-based, almost no work examines its implementation and effectiveness in community settings. A recent randomized community-based trial of an evidence-based BT for adolescent ADHD (Supporting Teens' Autonomy Daily; STAND; N = 278) reported high clinician, parent, and youth acceptability but variable implementation fidelity. Primary outcome analyses suggested no significant differences between STAND and usual care (UC) unless the clinician delivering STAND was licensed. The present study reports secondary outcomes for this trial on i

Psychosocial Experiences in Children With Congenital Melanocytic Nevus on the Face and Their Parents Throughout the Tissue Expansion Treatment.

Large congenial melanocytic nevus (LCMN) on the head and face can have negative psychological effects on children and possibly also parents. Patients and their families experience prolonged periods of stress during tissue expansion treatment. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the psychological impact of LCMN on children and parents and explore their fluctuations of psychological status during treatment. Psychosocial status was evaluated in 30 children with LCMN on the head and face and a control group of 56 sex- and age-matched children using the Child Behavior Checklist and the invent

Building long-term family resilience through universal prevention: 10-year parent and child outcomes during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As the COVID-19 pandemic has been highly stressful for parents and children, it is clear that strategies that promote long-term family resilience are needed to protect families in future crises. One such strategy, the Family Foundations program, is focused on promoting supportive coparenting at the transition to parenthood. In a randomized trial, we tested the long-term intervention effects of Family Foundations on parent, child, and family well-being one to two months after the imposition of a national shelter-in-place public health intervention in 2020. We used regression models to test inte

Development of Disordered Eating Behaviors and Comorbid Depressive Symptoms in Adolescence: Neural and Psychopathological Predictors.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders are common in adolescence and are devastating and strongly comorbid with other psychiatric disorders. Yet little is known about their etiology, knowing which would aid in developing effective preventive measures. METHODS: Longitudinal assessments of disordered eating behaviors (DEBs)-binge-eating, purging, and dieting-and comorbid psychopathology were measured in 1386 adolescents from the IMAGEN study. Development of DEBs and associated mental health problems was investigated by comparing participants who reported symptoms at ages 16 or 19 years, but not at age 14

Developmental Dyspraxia in Children With Learning Disorders: Four-Year Experience in a Referred Sample.

OBJECTIVE: The term apraxia is clearly understood in adult behavioral neurology, with assessment of gesture central to the diagnosis. In contrast, the concept of "developmental dyspraxia" has been more problematic. In an effort to better specify its potential significance, we describe preliminary practice-based evidence for understanding developmental dyspraxia acquired within a theoretical framework informed by both adult behavioral neurology and a neuroconstructivist appreciation of neurodevelopmental disorders. Specifically, we describe the experience of a diagnostic clinic for children wit

Preclinical modeling of exposure to a global marine bio-contaminant: Effects of in utero Domoic acid exposure on neonatal behavior and infant memory.

Domoic Acid (DA) is a naturally-occurring marine neurotoxin that is increasingly recognized as an important public health issue. Prenatal DA exposure occurs through the maternal consumption of contaminated shellfish/finfish. To better understand the fetal risks associated with DA, we initiated a longitudinal, preclinical study focused on the reproductive and developmental effects of chronic, low-dose oral DA exposure. To this end, 32 adult female Macaca fascicularis monkeys were orally dosed with 0, 0.075 or 0.15 mg/kg/day DA on a daily basis prior to breeding and throughout breeding and pregn

Internal structure and measurement invariance of the Dominic Interactive among Indigenous children in Quebec.

This study aims to examine the reliability and validity of the French version of the Dominic Interactive screening tool (Valla, 2008) among Indigenous children in Quebec. The Dominic Interactive is a computerized screening tool, which assesses prevalent emotional and behavioral problems in children. Participants in this study were 195 Innu Nation children aged between 8 and 11 years. Statistical analyses were performed on each of the 7 scales of the Dominic Interactive to assess reliability, factor structure, and measurement invariance across boys and girls. Results show satisfactory reliabili

Neurodevelopmental and emotional-behavioral outcomes in late-preterm infants: an observational descriptive case study.

BACKGROUND: Over the last decade, several studies investigated the outcomes in children born very preterm. Only recently there has been an increasing interest in the late preterm infants (born between 34 + 0 and 36 + 6 weeks). This population is at high risk of morbidity and mortality in the first years of life. Other studies reported that they are also at risk of long-term developmental problem. Therefore, the aim of this study is to describe the neurodevelopmental and emotional-behavioral outcome in a sample of late preterm patients. METHODS: The study included late preterm children and ado

Fetal Growth Restriction with Brain Sparing: Neurocognitive and Behavioral Outcomes at 12 Years of Age.

OBJECTIVE: To study neurocognitive functions and behavior in children with a history of fetal growth restriction (FGR) with brain sparing. We hypothesized that children with FGR would have poorer outcomes on these domains. STUDY DESIGN: Subjects were 12-year-old children with a history of FGR born to mothers with severe early-onset hypertensive pregnancy disorders (n = 96) compared with a normal functioning full term comparison group with a birth weight ≥2500 g (n = 32). Outcome measures were neurocognitive outcomes (ie, intelligence quotient, executive function, attention) and behavior. RES
