BACKGROUND: Intracranial dissections have been associated with baroreceptor reflex failure. When this occurs labile hypertension may be observed with its own complications, including but not limited to the clinico-radiographic entity, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES).
METHODS: Case report and literature review.
RESULTS: We describe a case of carotid dissection resulting in PRES.
CONCLUSIONS: We believe failure of the baroreceptor reflex due to carotid dissection resulted in hypertension and subsequent posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome.

There are two types of posthypoxic myoclonus, acute and chronic. The acute type has not been intensively studied but is likely to be brain stem in origin. Chronic posthypoxic myoclonus is most commonly cortical reflex myoclonus, but reticular reflex myoclonus and exaggerated startle may also occur. These three conditions have characteristic physiological features. In assessing the relevance of an animal model, it would be appropriate to identify the myoclonus with one of these three patterns.

OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to investigate auditory hypersensitivity in WS and to evaluate hyperacusis through standardized protocols, checking if it can be associated with the absence of acoustic reflexes in people with WS.
METHOD: The study was performed in 17 individuals with WS, aged between seven and 17 years old (10 males and seven females), and 17 individuals with typical development age- and gender-matched to individuals with WS. Statistical tests were used to analyze the responses collected with the Loudness Discomfort Level (LDL) test as well as ipsilateral and contr…

During partial dorsal rhizotomy (PDR), intraoperative dorsal rootlet stimulation often evokes nonreflex, rather than reflex, motor responses that are due to costimulation of adjacent ventral roots. Intraoperative areflexia typically predicts that motor responses evoked by dorsal rootlet stimulation are nonreflexive. The cause of areflexia during PDR is in part due to anesthesia, but other mechanisms are likely to play a role as well. In this study of three consecutive patients undergoing lumbosacral neurosurgery, soleus H-reflexes evoked by tibial nerve stimulation at the popliteal fossa were …

In 41 patients with acute myocardial infarction, carotid sinus message was performed during the first 48 hours and again 4 weeks later. A hyperactive carotid sinus reflex was found in 12 cases (29.3%) in the first post-infarction day, only in 4 cases (9.8%) 4 weeks later. Hyperactive carotid sinus reflexes occurred four times more in inferior wall than in anterior wall infarction. Myocardial necrosis seems to be able to provoke an hyperactive carotid sinus reflex.

In afoveate species such as mice, it is accepted that gaze is typically redirected by head movements with a saccade-and-fixate strategy, while the eyes primarily stabilize vision within a limited oculomotor range. This view suggests that the accompanying eye movements are primarily reflexive, driven by mechanisms like the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). However, emerging evidence challenges this assumption, suggesting that eye movements during active head motion may not be purely reflex-driven. Here, we directly test whether eye movements in mice are actively coordinated as part of voluntary ga…

The modulation of mechanically induced tracheobronchial cough was tested by applying various stimuli and the elicitation of other airway protective behaviors in pentobarbital anesthetized cats. Capsaicin and histamine were injected in the nose, and mechanical nylon fiber and / or air puff stimulation was applied to the nose and nasopharynx. Reflex responses of cough, sneeze, aspiration reflex and expiration reflex were induced mechanically. Swallow was initiated by the injection of water into oropharynx. Subthreshold mechanical stimulation of nasopharyngeal and nasal mucosa, as well as water s…

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVES: In vitro models of anoxia have revealed severe changes in neuronal functions after ischaemia but not after aglycaem … gical solution. The stimulation of a dorsal root elicited monosynaptic (MSR) and polysynaptic (PSR) reflex potentials in the segmental ventral root. The effects of suprefusing glucose free medium (aglycaemia) and superfusing glucose free and O2 free medium (ischaemia) were examined on these reflexes.
RESULTS: Superfusion of aglycaemic solution did not a …

In 1896 Joseph Francois Felix Babinski described for the first time the phenomenon of the toes. In his first paper he simply described extension of all toes with noxious stimulation of the sole of the foot. It was not until 1898 that he specifically described the extension of the hallux with stimulation of the lateral border of the sole. Babinski was probably not aware at the time that E. Remak, a German physician, had previously described the sign. In his third paper of 1903 Babinski concludes that if other authors had described the abnormal reflex before him, they found it fortuitously and d…

Hyperhidrosis is a disease that is characterized by excessive sweating due to hyperactivation of eccrine sweat glands. It may be localized or generalized form. Holmes-Adie syndrome is an idiopathic disease with unilateral pupil dilatation and loss of deep tendon reflexes. We present a 37-year-old female patient diagnosed with unilateral hyperhidrosis coincident with Holmes-Adie syndrome because of this unusual presentation.

In patients with syringomyelia and tuberculous spondilitis accompanied by spinal disturbances (which are in accordance with clinical data considered as models with prevalent signs of disintegration and irritation in the spinal cord) the authors studied separate parameters of the H-reflex and 2 functionally different muscles: m. gastrocnemium and m. soleus. It was possible to show certain differences in the parameters of the H-reflex between the two groups of patients and between the indices of the 2 studied motoneuron pools within each group. The report contains some ideas in relation to the p…

PURPOSE: Electrophysiologic changes in early Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) can be nondiagnostic. Improved testing paradigms may improve hyperacute treatment.
METHODS: This work prospectively evaluated consecutive patients admitted to a metropolitan teaching hospital in Melbourne, Australia, with suspected acute GBS. We performed extensive neurophysiology at three different time points. Novel tests, including cutaneous silent periods, long latency reflexes, and contraction-induced H reflexes, were assessed.
RESULTS: Twenty-three participants were studied, including 13 cases of acute GBS. In t…

Using decerebrate frogs (Rana catesbeiana), we investigated the role of vagal and laryngeal sensory feedback in controlling motor activation of the larynx. Vagal and laryngeal nerve afferents were activated by electrical stimulation of the intact vagal and laryngeal nerves. Pulmonary afferents were activated by lung inflation. Reflex responses were recorded by measuring efferent activity in the laryngeal branch of the vagus (Xl) and changes in glottal aperture. Two glottic closure reflexes were identified, one evoked by lung inflation or electrical stimulation of the main branch of the vagus (…
