Molecular Mechanisms of Dysregulated LH and FSH Secretion in Human Reproductive Failure.

Several reproductive issues in both men and women are caused by changes in the pulsatile secretion of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). For males to sustain spermatogenesis and Leydig cell function, and for females to ensure orderly folliculogenesis, ovulation, and ovarian steroidogenesis, precise coordination of LH and FSH secretion is necessary. Pituitary responsiveness, the frequency or amplitude of gonadotropin-releasing hormone pulses, or the dysregulation of feedback signals mediated by sex steroids and inhibins all disrupt the balance between LH and FSH se

Unmet needs during the reproductive journey for women with systemic lupus erythematosus.

In recent decades, pregnancy in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) has ceased to be a contraindication and has become more common due to improved understanding of the disease and improved healthcare assistance. However, there are still many gaps in the reproductive health of women with lupus, ranging from limited guidance on contraception and the best time to conceive, to conflicting information about medication use during pregnancy and concerns regarding short- and long-term complications for both the woman and the child. Finally, access to care for women with lupus remains frag

Leptin in Dairy Cows: Metabolic Adaptation, Reproductive Function, and Health Applications.

Leptin (LEP) is an adipocyte-derived cytokine that integrates nutritional status, metabolism, and reproduction in cattle, with particular relevance for modern high-producing dairy cows. In ruminants, LEP and its receptors are widely expressed in metabolic and reproductive tissues, including adipose tissue, liver, hypothalamus, pituitary, ovary, uterus, and placenta, where LEP modulates energy homeostasis, neuroendocrine function, and local tissue responses. Changes in circulating LEP concentrations during the transition period reflect changes in body fat reserve, insulin and GH-IGF-1 dynamics,…

Mechanisms of Hexavalent Chromium-Induced Reproductive Toxicity: A Focus on the Ovary and Placenta.

Hexavalent Chromium (Cr(VI)) is a Group A carcinogen, mutagen, and teratogen. Cr(VI) has been used by more than 50 industries, and its contamination of drinking water is widespread across the United States (U.S.). Epidemiological data of women who lived in Willits, California, U.S., indicate that environmental exposure to Cr(VI) adversely affects pregnancy outcomes and the health of their immediate offspring, resulting in a low birth rate, pregnancy loss, and spontaneous abortion, and their children (F1 offspring) experienced birth defects. However, the molecular mechanisms behind Cr(VI)-induc

Therapeutic applications of phosphodiesterase inhibitors in male reproductive health: narrative review.

INTRODUCTION: Phosphodiesterases (PDEs) are a family of enzymes that regulate intracellular levels of cyclic nucleotides, such as cyclic adenosine monophosphate and cyclic guanosine monophosphate. PDEs are considered key modulators of cellular signaling processes, including those governing male reproductive health. Owing to the pivotal role played by PDEs in male reproductive health, pharmacologic inhibition of PDEs has gained substantial attention in improving male reproductive health. However, despite the potential therapeutic application of PDE inhibitors (PDEis) in this field, a comprehens

Reproductive factors and brain volume in community-dwelling individuals: the Ohasama Study.

BACKGROUND: Reproductive history can be conceptualized as a life-course exposure integrating biological and social factors. Although reproductive factors have been associated with stroke risk and cognitive function, their relationships with structural brain changes remain unclear. Evidence from general population-based studies linking reproductive factors to brain volume, an intermediate marker of cognitive decline, is limited. This study examined whether age at menarche, age at menopause, estrogen exposure duration, and parity are associated with brain volume in postmenopausal women. METHODS

BACKGROUND: Polyparasitism is commonly associated with Plasmodium species, Schistosoma species and soil-transmitted helminths. Anaemia results from a variety of causes, including parasitic infections. Women of reproductive age (WRA) and children below the age of five are disproportionately affected by polyparasitic infections, putting them at risk of anaemia. The current study was conducted to evaluate the association of polyparasitic infections with anaemia among WRA in Kilifi. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 478 WRA in Rabai and Magarini subcounties in Kil

Endometrial BCL6 Expression and Reproductive Outcomes in Infertile Women: A Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives: Endometrial B-cell lymphoma 6 (BCL6) overexpression has been proposed as a marker of progesterone resistance, occult endometriosis, and endometrial dysfunction in infertile women. Its possible association with reproductive outcomes and its potential role in guiding management before embryo transfer have attracted increasing interest. However, the prognostic and clinical significance of BCL6 across infertility settings remains incompletely defined. We systematically reviewed the literature on endometrial BCL6 expression and reproductive outcomes in infertile women. Method

Interconnection between polycystic ovary syndrome, immune disorders, and reproductive outcomes.

ABSTRACT: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a multifactorial disorder traditionally recognized for its endocrine and metabolic disturbances. However, accumulating evidence indicates that chronic low-grade inflammation and immune dysregulation play a central role in its pathophysiology. This narrative review explores the immunological mechanisms underlying PCOS and their repercussions for reproductive outcomes. Women with PCOS exhibit increased circulating levels of inflammatory cytokines - including interleukin (IL)-6, IL-1β, IL-18, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) - alongside macroph

Reproductive coercion experienced by women living with HIV - a global scoping review.

Biomedical advancements in HIV prevention and treatment have provided opportunities for women living with HIV to move through pregnancy, give birth, and breastfeed while effectively removing the risk of vertical transmission of HIV to their child. However, existing evidence suggests that the reproductive health and rights of women living with HIV are threatened through coercive practices in healthcare settings because of their HIV status. The objective of this scoping review was to synthesise evidence and identify gaps in the literature on reproductive coercion experienced by women living with

Migration memories of sexual and reproductive health in late twentieth-century London.

This article  examines the sexual and reproductive health experiences of eight people who migrated to London in the late twentieth century from Kenya, Zambia, Nigeria, Sudan, and Uganda. Their experiences were captured through an oral history partnership with NAZ, a sexual health charity run by and for racialized people in London. They illuminate the informal processes of sexual and reproductive health knowledge production before migrating to London, such as jokes and gossip, in the face of minimal formal education on these topics. All of the interviewees studied in this article are living wit

T-Cell Biology in the Female Reproductive Tract: Relevance to HIV Infection.

Worldwide, most HIV infections occur across a mucosal surface during sexual contact, with women accounting for nearly half of reported new HIV infections across the globe in 2024. Most new infections in women and girls are believed to involve transmission across mucosal surfaces of the lower reproductive tract, which includes the vagina and ectocervix. Nevertheless, HIV-susceptible target cells are present in both the lower and upper reproductive tract, as are antigen-specific T-cells. Advances in the field of T-cell biology over the past decades have elucidated the differentiation and traffic

Diagnosis of Equine Genital Leptospirosis (EGL) in mares with poor reproductive performance.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease caused by spirochetes of the genus Leptospira. Equine genital leptospirosis (EGL) has been described as a chronic and silent syndrome, presenting reproductive alterations such as abortion, stillbirth, placentitis, embryonic loss, repeat breeding syndrome, and subfertility. This study aimed to investigate the genital Leptospira infection in naturally infected mares with poor reproductive performance, as well as to genetically characterize the agents. A total of 41 mares with a history of poor reproductive performance were selected. Sera were collected for ser

Microgravity impairs endocrine signaling and reproductive health of women. A narrative review.

During space exploration missions the organism is subjected to several challenges. Most of the studies have been performed on male health in space, leaving the focus on sex differences behind. With the development of new biological technologies, attention is now being paid more to how spaceflight conditions affect human reproductive health. In this review, the focus is on how weightlessness disrupts ovarian function and endocrine signaling by affecting the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Emerging evidence suggests that microgravity can impair estrogen production through the suppression of

Cyst-independent oocyte phagocytosis builds the female reproductive reserve in mice.

During ovariogenesis, more than two-thirds of germ cells are sacrificed to improve the quality of the remaining oocytes. However, the detailed mechanisms behind this selection process are not fully understood in mammals. Here, we developed a high-resolution, four-dimensional ovariogenesis imaging system to track the progression of oocyte fate determination in live mouse ovaries. Through this, we identified a cyst-independent oocyte phagocytosis mechanism that plays a key role in determining oocyte survival. We found that oocytes act as individual cells, rather than connected cyst structures, d
