The analysis of short tandem repeat (STR) systems usually relies on polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis followed by visualization with silver staining or autoradiography. Both these techniques may not be suitable for clinical laboratories. We developed a simple procedure based on the visualization of STR alleles by ethidium bromide staining. PURPOSE: The prognostic significance of argyrophilic staining in the nucleolar organizer regions was studied in 63 patients with primary urothelial tumors of the renal pelvis and ureter.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Silver staining of paraffin embedded sections was performed using a 1-step technique.
RESULTS: The prognosis for patients with a mean number of argyrophilic nucleolar organizer region proteins per nucleus (argyrophilic nucleolar organizer region score) of 8 or greater was significantly worse than that for patients with a score of less than 8 (P <0.001).

In a prospective 2-month case-controlled study, 17 cases of neonatal conjunctivitis were diagnosed. A statistically significant association between neonatal conjunctivitis and the presence of Chlamydia trachomatis (five cases) and Staphylococcus aureus (five cases) was shown. This study investigated the role of duodenogastric reflux in rats after antecolic gastrojejunostomy. Two management patterns were identified in 36 patients with exomphalos--primary surgical closure and initial topical therapy with delayed surgical closure. A remarkable gingival pigmentation around the restorated teeth was successfully treated by simple surgical removal; incision & coagulasion of deposits by electrosurgery. We describe a 44-year-old man who recently received a cadaveric renal transplant and had a relapse of Legionnaires' disease after an appropriate course of therapy. The relapse occurred within two weeks after completion of a three-week course of therapy with erythromycin stearate. A transbronchial biopsy specimen was positive for Legionella pneumophila by direct immunofluorescence, although the Dieterle silver impregnation stain was negative. Following an in vivo lesion of the rabbit thoracic aorta, endothelial regeneration was studied in silver-stained specimens from en face organ cultures of aortic segments with and without intercostal arteries.
