Temporal profile and mechanisms of the prompt sympathoexcitation following coronary ligation in Wistar rats.

Our aim was to assess the timing and mechanisms of the sympathoexcitation that occurs immediately after coronary ligation. We recorded thoracic sympathetic (tSNA) and phrenic activities, heart rate (HR) and perfusion pressure in Wistar rats subjected to either ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) or Sham operated in the working heart-brainstem preparation. Thirty minutes after LAD ligation, tSNA had increased (basal: 2.5±0.2 µV, 30 min: 3.5±0.3 µV), being even higher at 60 min (5.2±0.5 µV, P<0.01); while no change was observed in Sham animals. HR increased significant

Consistent interindividual increases or decreases in muscle sympathetic nerve activity during experimental muscle pain.

We recently showed that long-lasting muscle pain, induced by intramuscular infusion of hypertonic saline, evoked two patterns of cardiovascular responses across subjects: one group showed parallel increases in muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA), blood pressure, and heart rate, while the other group showed parallel decreases. Given that MSNA is consistent day to day, we tested the hypothesis that individuals who show increases in MSNA during experimental muscle pain will show consistent responses over time. MSNA was recorded from the peroneal nerve, together with blood pressure and heart

Muscle and skin sympathetic activities in Ross syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Ross syndrome (RS) is a rare degenerative disorder characterized by tonic pupil, areflexia and anhydrosis. The underlying lesion affects postganglionic skin sympathetic nerve fibers whereas the postganglionic muscle sympathetic branch is thought to be spared. Microneurography explores both skin and muscle peripheral sympathetic branches and it does not usually detect peripheral sympathetic outflow in either branch in chronic autonomic failure syndromes. The aim of this study was to record sympathetic activity by microneurography for the first time in RS patients to confirm the sele

Control of sympathetic vasomotor tone by catecholaminergic C1 neurones of the rostral ventrolateral medulla oblongata.

AIMS: Increased sympathetic tone in obstructive sleep apnoea results from recurrent episodes of systemic hypoxia and hypercapnia and might be an important contributor to the development of cardiovascular disease. In this study, we re-evaluated the role of a specific population of sympathoexcitatory catecholaminergic C1 neurones of the rostral ventrolateral medulla oblongata in the control of sympathetic vasomotor tone, arterial blood pressure, and hypercapnia-evoked sympathetic and cardiovascular responses. METHODS AND RESULTS: In anaesthetized rats in vivo and perfused rat working heart brai

Single-unit muscle sympathetic nervous activity and its relation to cardiac noradrenaline spillover.

Recent work using single-unit sympathetic nerve recording techniques has demonstrated aberrations in the firing pattern of sympathetic nerves in a variety of patient groups. We sought to examine whether nerve firing pattern is associated with increased noradrenaline release. Using single-unit muscle sympathetic nerve recording techniques coupled with direct cardiac catheterisation and noradrenaline isotope dilution methodology we examined the relationship between single-unit firing patterns and cardiac and whole body noradrenaline spillover to plasma. Participants comprised patients with hyper

The impact of allostatic load on maternal sympathovagal functioning in stressful child contexts: implications for problematic parenting.

The present study applies an allostatic load framework to an examination of the relationship between maternal psychosocial risk factors and maladaptive parenting behaviors. Specifically, the implications of low socioeconomic status and maternal depressive symptoms for maternal sympathovagal functioning during young children's distress were examined, as well as whether that functioning was, in turn, associated with maternal insensitivity, hostility, intrusiveness, and disengagement during mother-child dyadic interaction. Consistent with an allostatic framework, three patterns of sympathovagal f

Angiotensin AT1 receptors in paraventricular nucleus contribute to sympathetic activation and enhanced cardiac sympathetic afferent reflex in renovascular hypertensive rats.

Sympathetic activity is enhanced in hypertension, which contributes to the pathogenesis of hypertension and progression of organ damage. The cardiac sympathetic afferent reflex (CSAR) is enhanced in renovascular hypertension and involved in the sympathetic activation. The present study was designed to investigate whether angiotensin II (Ang II) and Ang II type 1 (AT(1)) receptors in paraventricular nucleus (PVN) contribute to the enhanced CSAR and sympathetic outflow in experimental renovascular hypertensive rats. Hypertension was induced by the two-kidney one-clip (2K1C) method. The normotens

Resting muscle sympathetic nerve activity, cardiac metaiodobenzylguanidine uptake, and exercise tolerance in patients with left ventricular dysfunction.

BACKGROUND: Sympathetic nerve overactivity and reduced exercise tolerance are characteristic features of patients with heart failure. However, to what extent sympathetic nerve overactivity contributes to limiting exercise tolerance has not been clearly defined. METHODS: Myocardial iodine 123-metaiodobenzylguanidine (MIBG) scintigraphy, muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA), and cardiopulmonary exercise testing were performed within 3 days in 30 patients with left ventricular dysfunction (LVD). Cardiac sympathetic nerve activity was estimated using H/M ratio and washout rate (WR) of 123I-MI

Excessive sympathetic activation in heart failure with chronic renal failure: role of chemoreflex activation.

OBJECTIVE: Sympathetic activation contributes both to the initiation and progression of heart failure. The role of chronic renal failure (CRF) in determining sympathetic overactivity in chronic heart failure (CHF) patients is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that in CHF patients, CRF could lead to increase sympathetic activity through tonic activation of excitatory chemoreceptor afferents. METHODS: We conducted a double-blind, randomized, vehicle-controlled study to examine the effect of chemoreflex deactivation on muscle sympathetic nerve activity in CHF patients with or without CRF. We com

Menopausal complaints are associated with cardiovascular risk factors.

It has been hypothesized that women with vasomotor symptoms differ from those without with respect to cardiovascular risk factors or responses to exogenous hormone therapy. We studied whether the presence and extent of menopausal complaints are associated with cardiovascular risk profile. Data were used from a population-based sample of 5523 women, aged 46 to 57 years, enrolled between 1994 and 1995. Data on menopausal complaints and potential confounders were collected by questionnaires. Total cholesterol, systolic and diastolic blood pressures, and body mass index were measured. Linear and l

Acute homocysteine administration does not elevate sympathetic nerve activity in rats.

Both hyperhomocystenemia and sympathetic overactivity are characterized by increased platelet aggregation, proliferation of vascular smooth muscle, accelerated atherosclerosis, left ventricular hypertrophy, and arterial hypertension. This coexistence of pathophysiological features suggests the possibility that homocysteine may cause increases in sympathetic nerve activity (SNA), which may in turn contribute to vascular and end-organ damage. To test this, we gave continuous intravenous infusion of vehicle (saline) in control experiments, or d,l-homocysteine (2.5 mg/kg, followed by 10 mg/ml at 4

Treatment of inoperable coronary disease and refractory angina: spinal stimulators, epidurals, gene therapy, transmyocardial laser, and counterpulsation.

Intractable angina from refractory coronary disease is a severe form of myocardial ischemia for which revascularization provides no prognostic benefit. Inoperable coronary disease is also accompanied by a "vicious cycle" of myocardial dystrophy from a chronic alteration of the cardiac sympathetic tone and sensitization of damaged cardiac tissues. Several adjunctive treatments have demonstrated efficacy when revascularization is either unsuccessful or contraindicated. Spinal cord stimulation modifies the neurologic input and output of the heart by delivering a very low dose of electrical curren

The emotional ear in stress.

Stress of some kind is encountered everyday and release of stress hormones is essential for adaptation to change. Stress can be physical (pain, noise exposure, etc.), psychological (apprehension to impending events, acoustic conditioning, etc.) or due to homeostatic disturbance (hunger, blood pressure, inner ear pressure, etc.). Persistent elevated levels of stress hormones can lead to disease states. The aim of the present review is to bring together data describing morphological or functional evidence for hormones of stress within the inner ear. The present review describes possible multiple

Aldosterone breakthrough during angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor therapy.

The effectiveness of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors in the treatment of cardiac diseases after infarction and heart failure, and of renal disease such as diabetic nephropathy, has been reported from recent large-scale clinical trials on ACE inhibitors. However, effects of ACE inhibitors during long-term therapy have not always been optimal. In recent years, aldosterone breakthrough has been suggested as a factor potentially involved, in that aldosterone levels may not remain suppressed when an ACE inhibitor is given for a relatively long time, with circulating aldosterone conce

[Depression, stress and coronary heart disease--epidemiology, prognosis and therapeutic sequelae].

Depression and coronary heart disease may be related in several ways: (1) There is epidemiological evidence that high levels of depressive symptoms in male and female patients are associated with an increased risk of myocardial infarction and a higher mortality following an acute cardiac event. Furthermore, patients developing depression after myocardial infarction have more complications, including cardiac arrhythmias. (2) In patients with a chronic coronary heart disease depression also results in a worse cardiac functional status with more frequent and severe chest pain, more physical limit

Sympathetic and cardiac baroreflex function in panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: Recent reports have demonstrated increased cardiac risk, and an association with essential hypertension in patients with panic disorder. The cause is not known, but possibly involves sympathetic nervous activation. In this study, we evaluated the arterial baroreflex control of vascular sympathetic nervous outflow and cardiac baroreflex function in panic disorder patients. METHODS AND RESULTS: We studied nine patients suffering from panic disorder and ten healthy subjects. Microneurographic recording of muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) was made with simultaneous recording o

[Increased level of tonic sympathetic arousal in high-vs. low-alexithymic cervical dystonia patients].

The purpose of this study was to assess whether alexithymia is a risk factor for autonomic dysregulation in cervical dystonia (spasmodic torticollis, ST). Alexithymia was assessed by an authorized German version of the TAS-20. In a first step, we recruited 10 ST-patients with high alexithymia scores (> 62; M = 69.2, SD = 3.0) and compared them with 10 ST-patients with low alexithymia scores (< 35; M = 28.7, SD = 4.3) on physiological and subjective responses to a cognitive and an emotional laboratory stressor. High-alexithymic ST-patients generally showed increased levels of autonomic arousal
