Clinically feasible metrics, that can inform the concussion recovery decision making process by evaluating a unique domain beyond current testing domains (e.g., balance, neurocognition, symptoms, vestibular/ocular function) are still in need. The purpose of this study was to compare perceptual-motor control in adolescent athletes ≤21 days of sport-related concussion and healthy controls and evaluate the association of perceptual-motor control to the outcomes of commonly-used sport-related concussion clinical assessments. Athletes (age: 12-18 years) with sport-related concussion (n = 48) and he

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Perception is an essential skill leading to expertise in diagnostic radiology. We determined if practicing "Where's Waldo?" images improves accuracy and speed with which first and second year radiology residents detect abnormalities on chest radiographs (CXRs).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Residents at three institutions were pretested using 50 CXRs, identifying locations of potential abnormalities. They were then split into trained (examining 7 "Where's Waldo?" images over three weeks) and control groups (no "Where's Waldo?"). They were then re-tested on the 50 CXRs. At o

Older adults have difficulty adapting to new visual information, posing a challenge to maintain balance during walking. Virtual reality can be used to study gait adaptability in response to discordant sensorimotor stimulations. This study aimed to investigate age-related modifications and propensity for visuomotor adaptations due to continuous visual perturbations during overground walking in a virtual reality headset. Twenty old and twelve young subjects walked on an instrumented walkway in real and virtual environments while reacting to antero-posterior and medio-lateral oscillations of the

ObjectiveAn essential component for optimizing quality of life in adults with cancer is determining the degree to which therapy may negatively impact motor-performance, so that patients can maintain their quality of life and independence. This study examined whether instrumented gait and balance could determine the magnitude of deterioration in motor-performance from chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN).MethodsWe recruited 84 adults with cancer (age = 71.1 ± 9.7 years old, BMI = 26.8 ± 6.2 kg/m2, gender = 56%female) and 57 age-matched non-cancer patients (age = 69.5 ± 9.8 years ol

Visual space is retinotopically mapped such that peripheral objects are processed in a cortical region outside the region that represents central vision. Despite this well-known fact, neuroimaging studies have found information about peripheral objects in the foveal confluence, the cortical region representing the fovea. Further, this information is behaviorally relevant: disrupting the foveal confluence using transcranial magnetic stimulation impairs discrimination of peripheral objects at time-points consistent with a disruption of feedback. If the foveal confluence receives feedback of info

OBJECTIVE: Sensory deficits, measured through vibratory perception threshold (VPT), have been recognized in hip and knee osteoarthritis (OA), but have not been evaluated in femoroacetabular impingement (FAI), thought to be a pre-OA condition. This study aimed to assess VPT in symptomatic FAI pre- and 6-months post-arthroscopy vs.
METHODS: FAI patients and controls were assessed for VPT at the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Pain was assessed using a visual analog pain scale. FAI participants were evaluated again 6-months after surgery for FAI. Differences between groups and pre- and post- su

Sound perception requires functional hair cell mechanotransduction (MET) machinery, including the MET channels and tip-link proteins. Prior work showed that uptake of ototoxic aminoglycosides (AG) into hair cells requires functional MET channels. In this study, we examined whether tip-link proteins, including Cadherin 23 (Cdh23), regulate AG entry into hair cells. Using time-lapse microscopy on cochlear explants, we found rapid uptake of gentamicin-conjugated Texas Red (GTTR) into hair cells from three-day-old Cdh23(+/+) and Cdh23(v2J/+) mice, but failed to detect GTTR uptake in Cdh23(v2J/v2J)

BACKGROUND: Flicker comparison superimposes baseline photos of the optic nerve head to subsequent photos, alternating them at a high frequency rate to create the perception of motion showing glaucomatous structural changes over time. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the degree of concordance among examiners in judging glaucomatous progression between serial optic nerve head photos using digital image flicker comparison versus the traditional side-by-side photograph comparison method. The secondary purpose was to determine if flicker comparison was quicker than side-by-side co

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The aging process leads to changes in sleep with a negative impact on the quality of life. Sleep is an important marker of quality of life and the relationship between physical exercise and sleep conditions has been the subject of various scientific studies, suggesting that the elderly who practice physical exercise present fewer sleeping problems. The purpose of this study was to compare the sleep of physically active and sedentary elderly women.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: We included 101 elderly women, 53 practicing physical activity (PAG) and 48 sedentary (SG), matched f

Gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD) has been associated with a variety of supra-oesophageal symptoms, including asthma, laryngitis, hoarseness, chronic cough, frequent throat clearing and globus pharyngeus. GERD may be overlooked as the underlying mechanism for these symptoms because typical GERD symptoms may be absent, despite abnormal oesophageal acid exposure. Two basic mechanisms linking GERD with laryngeal symptoms have been proposed: direct contact of gastric acid with the upper airway, in some cases due to micro-aspiration, and a vagovagal reflex triggered by acidification of the d

BACKGROUND: Research suggests that exposure to occupational stressors are related to the presence and/or exacerbation of work-related upper extremity symptoms in office workers. Also worker's response to work demands and/or job stressors (i.e., workstyle) may exacerbate symptom severity and impact function. The present study examines the association among work demands, job stress and workstyle on pain and function.
METHODS: 124 symptomatic female office workers completed a questionnaire measuring demographics, medical history, work demands, perception of the work environment, workstyle, pain

UNLABELLED: We investigated the hyperalgesic (antianalgesic) effect of the inhaled anesthetics isoflurane, halothane, nitrous oxide, and diethyl ether, or the nonimmobilizer 1, 2-dichlorohexafluorocyclobutane at subanesthetic partial pressures (or, for the nonimmobilizer, subanesthetic partial pressures predicted from lipid solubility) in rats. Hyperalgesia was assessed as a decrease in the time to withdrawal of a rat hind paw exposed to heat. All four anesthetics, including nitrous oxide and diethyl ether, produced hyperalgesia at low partial pressures, with a maximal effect at 0.1 minimum al

The relationship between dynamic pupillary function and peripheral nerve function was studied in 85 randomly-selected diabetic patients and 67 age-matched normals using a portable infrared pupillometer (Pupilscan Version 5). Seven measurements were chosen to represent different components of the pupillary constriction-redilatation curve after a standardized light stimulus. Constriction latency was significantly prolonged in diabetic patients (p = 0.05), as was time to 63% redilatation (p = 0.001). Thermal thresholds at the feet weakly correlated with relative reflex amplitude (warm: r = -0.22,

Thirty-five patients who underwent a total of 44 neck dissections of various types were prospectively studied to compare differences in postoperative shoulder function. Those who underwent a radical neck dissection suffered the greatest reduction in shoulder movement and had severely abnormal electromyograms. Those who underwent modified neck dissection with preservation of the spinal accessory nerve suffered less loss of shoulder function than the radical neck dissection group, but not to a significant degree at 16 weeks; however, the electromyograms of patients who underwent modified neck di

How increased ventilatory drive shapes the temporal evolution and multidimensional experience of exertional dyspnoea remains incompletely understood. This study examined whether experimentally increasing ventilatory drive via dead-space loading (DSL) alters dyspnoea during constant-load exercise. Nine healthy adults (7 male; V̇O2peak 100 ± 16% predicted) performed constant-load cycle ergometry to task failure at 50%Δ between the gas-exchange threshold and V̇O2peak under control (CTRL) and DSL (15% vital capacity) conditions in a randomised crossover design. Depression has been linked to a negative bias in emotional perception, with patients frequently showing more negative valence and higher arousal ratings of emotional stimuli, such as words and images. Nevertheless, studies in large depression cohorts which also incorporate longitudinal and genetic data are lacking. We investigated the effects of depression on valence and arousal ratings of emotional words at two time points in 1392 participants of the BiDirect Study, a German cohort enriched in patients that were hospitalized due to an acute depressive episode at the time of recruitment. Data
