BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic diode laser cyclophotocoagulation with a limbal approach was reviewed retrospectively. The delivery system and procedure used as well as the role of this procedure in the management of glaucoma are discussed.

BACKGROUND: There are several advantages to implanting a posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL) in the ciliary sulcus when the lens capsule is absent. The authors evaluate by means of Color Doppler Imaging (CDI) the blood flow in ophthalmic artery, posterior ciliary arteries and central retinal artery in a group of glaucomatous patients. The data obtained in this study show a statistically significant reduction of the mean systolic peak flow velocity in ophthalmic artery in glaucomas in comparison with controls. In Glaucomatous patients with uncontrolled IOP there was a reduction of end-diastolic flow velocities and a rise of resistivity index in ciliary arteries and central retinal artery.

Endothelin-like immunoreactivity was detected in human (15.6 +/- 2.7 pg/ml) and bovine (11.1 +/- 0.98 pg/ml) aqueous humour of the eye. These concentrations are 2-3 times higher than the corresponding plasma levels. Cultured human nonpigmented ciliary epithelial cells released endothelin-like immunoreactivity with a maximum of 2.1 +/- 0.32 pg/(cm2* 48 h). Two morphologically distinct types of preganglionic endings are observed in the avian ciliary ganglion: boutonal and cap-like. Ten patients with large melanomas and one patient with recurrent retinoblastoma were treated with combined localized current field (LCF) hyperthermia and iodine 125 irradiation delivered by episcleral plaque. Severe contusion of the lens in a penetrating scleral injury of the eye of a young patient resulted in separation and bleb-like detachment of the posterior lens capsule with subcapsular accumulation of a fibrin-containing exudate. This separation of the posterior lens capsule resulting from increase of permeability with subcapsular fluid accumulation is believed to represent a possible basic mechanism of posterior lens involvement without capsule rupture secondary to ocular trauma.
