To find mechanisms of an extreme polydipsia in an inbred strain of mice, STR/N, this study was undertaken using Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) mice as a control. During food deprivation, daily water intake of both strains decreased. The decrement in the STR/N mice was larger than that in the ICR mice. Between 1 February 1987 and 31 May 1988 an evaluation of a nutritional rehabilitation centre in Tahoua, Niger was conducted. Among the 381 children admitted to the centre, 61 (16%) had kwashiorkor and 347 (91.3%) were aged between 6 and 29 months. Recovery and death rates were 46.2% and 14.4%, respectively. The median duration of stay until recovery was 21 days. Sixty-two per cent of deaths occurred during the 1st week of hospitalization. Sixteen children with multiple sclerosis, 14 with remitting and 2 with progressive course, and their follow up for 4-16 (mean, 9 years) are reported. To assess the importance and severity of measles in the Port Moresby area, 101 cases seen in hospital Out-Patients, and 26 cases seen in urban clinics during 1974, and 277 cases admitted during 1973-74, are analysed. The majority of cases were in children under 3 year of age. Of the 101 out-patients, only 19 had uncomplicated measles. 61 had pneumonia and 28 had gastro-enteritis. 19 needed admission to hospital. OBJECTIVE: To determine the predisposing factors for PI in patients hospitalized after stroke.
METHODS: This 7-day longitudinal study followed up with patients hospitalized after stroke. Assessments included mobility, nutrition, and the presence of dysphagia and anemia. The nutrition evaluation was based on anthropometric, biochemical, and dietary determinants. Pressure injury (PI) risk was assessed via the Braden Scale. Mann-Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests were applied.

BACKGROUND: In Central America, an epidemic of chronic kidney disease of unknown cause disproportionately affects young male agricultural workers.
STUDY DESIGN: Longitudinal cohort study.
SETTING & PARTICIPANTS: 284 sugarcane workers in 7 jobs were recruited from one company in northwestern Nicaragua. Blood and urine samples were collected before and near the end of the 6-month harvest season.
PREDICTORS: Job category (cane cutter, seeder, seed cutter, agrichemical applicator, irrigator, driver, and factory worker); self-reported water and electrolyte solution intake.
