BACKGROUND: Range of motion deficits in shoulder external rotation (ER), internal rotation (IR), total rotation range of motion (ER + IR), and horizontal adduction (HA) have been retrospectively associated with overhand athletes' arm injuries.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a relatively common, profoundly disabling and incurable disease that presents in early childhood with hypotonia, weakness and decreased movement. Without ventilatory support, premature death from respiratory insufficiency is universal in children with spinal muscular atrophy type 1 (SMA1). With mechanical ventilation, however, long-term survival in SMA1 has been reported from numerous international centres. We performed both clinical and radiographic evaluations of 178 patients (190 hips) who had undergone cementless total hip arthroplasties using Harris-Galante I/II porous cups after an average 12-year follow-up period (range, 8-18 years). Electric impedance measurements on awake rabbits with electrodes implanted into cortex, thalamus, and hypothalamus showed that modeling of the noise and general (wide-band) vibration, as well as their combination with sea-sickness action, leads to disturbances in the aqueous-electrolyte balance in brain. This is manifested by extracellular and (less pronounced) intracellular edema development. Picamilon administration (10 mg/kg, i.v.) completely prevented development of the vibration-induced intracellular edema and markedly reduced the development of damage in all other cases studied.
