Comparisons of Hyperostotic Bones in Two Species of the Genus Oligoplites Gill, 1863 in the Southern Brazilian Coast.

The description of skeletal disorders is commonly reported in fish species raised through aquaculture; however, wild marine fish may also exhibit high frequencies of anomalies, particularly the development of hyperostosis, a condition that causes thickening of the bones. Specimens of Oligoplites saliens (n = 15) and Oligoplites palometa (n = 14) were radiographed to verify hyperostotic bone occurrences. Hyperostosis was detected in all individuals (> 400 mm TL) analysed for both species, occurring in six distinct regions of the skeleton (supraoccipital bone, cleithrum, dorsal pterygiophores, a

SOLID: minimizing tissue distortion for brain-wide profiling of diverse architectures.

Brain-wide profiling of diverse biological components is fundamental for understanding complex brain pathology. Despite the availability in whole-brain imaging, it is still challenging to conduct multiplexed, brain-wide analysis with current tissue clearing techniques. Here, we propose SOLID, a hydrophobic tissue clearing method that can minimize tissue distortion while offering impressive clearing performance. SOLID achieves high-quality imaging of multi-color labeled mouse brain, and the acquired datasets can be effectively registered to the Allen Brain Atlas via commonly-used algorithms. SO

Classification Method of ECG Signals Based on RANet.

BACKGROUND: Electrocardiograms (ECG) are an important source of information on human heart health and are widely used to detect different types of arrhythmias. OBJECTIVE: With the advancement of deep learning, end-to-end ECG classification models based on neural networks have been developed. However, deeper network layers lead to gradient vanishing. Moreover, different channels and periods of an ECG signal hold varying significance for identifying different types of ECG abnormalities. METHODS: To solve these two problems, an ECG classification method based on a residual attention neural netw

Understanding the impact of modiolus porosity on stimulation of spiral ganglion neurons by cochlear implants.

Moderate-to-profound sensorineural hearing loss in humans is treatable by electrically stimulating the auditory nerve (AN) with a cochlear implant (CI). In the cochlea, the modiolus presents a porous bony interface between the CI electrode and the AN. New bone growth caused by the presence of the CI electrode or neural degeneration inflicted by ageing or otological diseases might change the effective porosity of the modiolus and, thereby, alter its electrical material properties. Using a volume conductor description of the cochlea, with the aid of a 'mapped conductivity' method and an ad-hoc '

Structural and functional brain alterations in laryngeal dystonia: A coordinate-based activation likelihood estimation meta-analysis.

Laryngeal dystonia (LD) is an isolated, task-specific, focal dystonia characterized by intermittent spasms of laryngeal muscles impairing speech production. Although recent studies have demonstrated neural alterations in LD, the consistency of findings across studies is not well-established, limiting their translational applicability. We conducted a systematic literature search to identify studies reporting stereotactic coordinates of peak structural and functional abnormalities in LD patients compared to healthy controls, followed by a coordinate-based activation likelihood estimation meta-an

Chronic itch management: therapies beyond those targeting the immune system.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic itch can be a debilitating, unrelenting symptom. Over the years, we have advanced our knowledge about immune-mediated itch (eg, atopic dermatitis) and have developed several treatments targeting these immune pathways. Chronic itch that is noninflammatory in nature is more elusive. However, we have gained some understanding of the neural component mediating itch and have made progress in treating this challenging symptom. DATA SOURCES: A comprehensive literature search was conducted, and data and literature were reviewed on the topics of chronic itch, its pathophysiology, an

A Small Potassium Current in AgRP/NPY Neurons Regulates Feeding Behavior and Energy Metabolism.

Neurons that co-express agouti-related peptide (AgRP) and neuropeptide Y (NPY) are indispensable for normal feeding behavior. Firing activities of AgRP/NPY neurons are dynamically regulated by energy status and coordinate appropriate feeding behavior to meet nutritional demands. However, intrinsic mechanisms that regulate AgRP/NPY neural activities during the fed-to-fasted transition are not fully understood. We found that AgRP/NPY neurons in satiated mice express high levels of the small-conductance calcium-activated potassium channel 3 (SK3) and are inhibited by SK3-mediated potassium curren

Insertion of intra-oral electrodes for cranial nerve monitoring using a Crowe-Davis retractor.

Acoustic neuroma resection is an example of a neurosurgical procedure where the brainstem and multiple cranial nerves are at risk for injury. Electrode placement for monitoring of the glossopharyngeal and hypoglossal nerves during acoustic neuroma resection can be challenging. The purpose of this report is to illustrate the use of a device for intra-oral electrode placement for intraoperative monitoring of the glossopharyngeal and hypoglossal nerves. A 60-year-old male presented for acoustic neuroma resection. Under general anesthesia, a Crowe-Davis retractor was used to open the mouth, provid

[Antioxidant use as dietary therapy in patients with multiple sclerosis].

INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis is an immune-mediated disease that produces chronic inflammation and neural degeneration. The disease progresses with acute attacks that result in myelin inflammation. This in turn increases oxidative stress and favors the appearance of reactive oxygen species. Reactive oxygen species damage neural cells causing apoptosis. The etiology of multiple sclerosis remains unknown and current therapy is aggressive and expensive. Recently, complementary and alternative medicine therapies have been proposed to control pathogenesis and symptoms of this disease. It is beli

Association between amygdala response to emotional faces and social anxiety in autism spectrum disorders.

Difficulty interpreting facial expressions has been reported in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and is thought to be associated with amygdala abnormalities. To further explore the neural basis of abnormal emotional face processing in ASD, we conducted an fMRI study of emotional face matching in high-functioning adults with ASD and age, IQ, and gender matched controls. In addition, we investigated whether there was a relationship between self-reported social anxiety and fMRI activation. During fMRI scanning, study participants were instructed to match facial expressions depicting fear or anger.

Visual field defects and neural losses from experimental glaucoma.

Glaucoma is a relatively common disease in which the death of retinal ganglion cells causes a progressive loss of sight, often leading to blindness. Typically, the degree of a patient's visual dysfunction is assessed by clinical perimetry, involving subjective measurements of light-sense thresholds across the visual field, but the relationship between visual and neural losses is inexact. Therefore, to better understand of the effects of glaucoma on the visual system, a series of investigations involving psychophysics, electrophysiology, anatomy, and histochemistry were conducted on experimenta

Peripheral nerve regeneration in the apolipoprotein-E-deficient mouse.

Apolipoprotein E (apo E) is thought to mediate the reutilization of myelin cholesterol for nerve regeneration. Prior research suggests that apo E is not essential for nerve regeneration following a nerve crush injury. This study was conducted to determine if apo E is essential for nerve regeneration after nerve transection and interposition nerve autograft. Nerve regeneration of transgenic apo E-deficient mice was compared with control mice after a sciatic nerve neurolysis and repair and interposition autograft. Histomorphometric assessment and histology were performed on distal nerve segments

Alzheimer's disease prediction via an explainable CNN using genetic algorithm and SHAP values.

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are widely recognized for their high precision in image classification. Nevertheless, the lack of transparency in these black-box models raises concerns in sensitive domains such as healthcare, where understanding the knowledge acquired to derive outcomes can be challenging. To address this concern, several strategies within the field of explainable AI (XAI) have been developed to enhance model interpretability. This study introduces a novel XAI technique, GASHAP, which integrates a genetic algorithm (GA) with SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) to improve

Neural correlates of late talking: A systematic review of electrophysiological and neuroimaging studies.

BACKGROUND: Late talking (LT), a delay in expressive vocabulary in early childhood, affects a significant minority of toddlers and can be a precursor to persistent language and literacy impairments. While behavioral profiles are well-documented, a systematic synthesis of its underlying neurobiology is lacking. This systematic review aimed to identify, evaluate, and synthesize evidence from electrophysiological (EEG) and neuroimaging (MRI) studies on the neural correlates of late talking in children. METHODS: We conducted a systematic search of Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed from inception

Study protocol of a randomized controlled trial for the synergizing effects of rTMS and Tui Na on upper limb motor function and cortical activity in ischemic stroke.

Upper limb motor dysfunction after stroke is a serious threat to the living quality of patients and their families. Recovery of upper limb motor function after stroke largely relies on the activation and remodeling of neural circuits. rTMS (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation) has been proved to promote the reconstruction of neural synapses and neural circuits. However, there are still a large number of patients who cannot fully recover and leave behind varying degrees of dysfunction. Considering the systemic pathology after stroke, in addition to focal brain injury, stroke can also c
