Interactions in human quadriceps-triceps surae motoneuron pathways.

In an effort to more fully investigate spinal reflex pathways in humans, we measured the isometric force-time curve of the patellar (PTR) and Achilles (ATR) tendon-tap reflex in 12 college age subjects. We also conditioned the tendon jerk with a contralateral or ipsilateral tendon-tap stimulus, to ascertain the effects of segmental inputs on crossed-spinal reflex activity. The conditioning stimulus preceded the test reflex by 25, 40, 55, 70, 85, 100, 115, 130 or 145 ms. The results demonstrate that a tap to the contralateral patellar tendon produced long-latency excitation of quadriceps motone

Ataxic hemiparesis syndrome clinical and CT study of 20 new cases.

Twenty patients suffering from ataxic hemiparesis caused by lacunar infarcts were studied using computerized tomography. Supratentorial lesions were found in nineteen patients (95%) while subtentorial lesion was found in only one patient (5%). In all cases the lesions were localized along the corticopontine pathways, making the hypothesis of injury to this pathway the most valid explanation of ataxia.

Spreading of epileptic afterdischarges between entorhinal cortex and hippocampus in acute experiments and the kindling model of epilepsy in the rat--comparing different methods of analysis.

Spreading of epileptiform activity in the central nervous system is one of the fundamental problems in epileptology. The patterns of spreading of after-discharges in the hippocampus and entorphinal cortex were studied in acute experiments and using the kindling model of epileptogenesis. Three methods were used to determine the time relations between EEG signals from different brain areas; visual inspections, average amount of mutual information (AAMI) and phase spectrum method. The analysis methods used are adequate for quantification of the degree of coupling between different EEG signals dur

Pyloroplasty divides vagus nerve fibers to the greater curvature of the stomach. An axonal tracing study.

Recent studies have demonstrated the location in the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve (dmnX) of nerve cells that project preganglionic efferent vagus nerve fibers to the greater curvature of the stomach. Although it is clear that these fibers are contained within the vagus nerve trunks, the intra-abdominal pathways of these fibers are unknown. When a neurotracer was applied to the right gastroepiploic pedicle, nerve cells in the bilateral dmnX were labeled. If a preliminary anterior or posterior pyloroplasty was performed before the application of the neurotracer, cellular labeling was

Separate channels mediate prestimulus facilitation and suppression of rabbit nictitating membrane reflex.

Neurophysiological mechanisms underlying prestimulus-induced facilitation and suppression of reflex amplitude were investigated by using the rabbit nictitating membrane reflex (NMR). Experiment 1 was conducted to investigate the retractor bulbi motoneuron pool in the region of the abducens nucleus. Direct electrical stimulation of the pool caused NM extension, and recordings from the motoneurons showed greatly increased activity under conditions of NMR amplitude facilitation. Decreased motoneuron activity was conspicuously absent under conditions of NMR amplitude suppression. In Experiment 2,

The inferior olive of Saimiri sciureus: olivocerebellar projections to the anterior lobe.

Olivocerebellar projections to lobules IV and V of the anterior lobe of the squirrel monkey (Saimiri sciureus) cerebellum were studied using a wheat germ agglutinin-horseradish peroxidase conjugate (WGA-HRP). Placements of WGA-HRP in the cerebellar cortex, labeled neurons in different subgroups of the contralateral inferior olive depending on the position of the injection site. Injections in medial aspects of lobules IV and V labeled cells in subgroups a and b of the caudal medial accessory olive (MAO) and in the lateral dorsal accessory olive. Chlorpromazine protects brain tissue in hypoxia by delaying spreading depression-mediated calcium influx.

We have investigated the possible protective effect of chlorpromazine in hypoxia of brain tissue, using rat hippocampal slices maintained at 35-36 degrees C. The recovery of synaptic transmission along the Schaffer collaterals to the CA1 pathway after 9 min hypoxia was compared in chlorpromazine-treated and in control slices. Recovery upon reoxygenation was the exception in control slices, while it was observed in approximately 50 and 100% of slices treated with 7 and 70 microM chlorpromazine, respectively. Chlorpromazine also significantly delayed the occurrence of the hypoxia-induced spreadi

[Electrographic reflection of vegetative protective and compensatory reactions in craniocerebral trauma].

The authors substantiate the assumption that the presence of high-amplitude superslow potential fluctuations in registration from the skin surface of the head is determined by destabilization of subcortical intercentral relationships which comprises inhibition of stem and activation of posterohypothalamic structures in craniocerebral trauma. The constant potential reacts only to the sharpest period of a severe craniocerebral trauma and reflects acute inflammatory and vascular phenomena on the cortical level in the first 24 hours; maintenance or appearance of increased positive values of the co

Thiamine deficiency and nervous system function disturbances.

Thiamine is important for oxidative metabolism, and B1 deficiency is thought to give rise to polyneuropathies. A group of male Wistar rats (n = 15) received a vitamin B1 deficient diet (group-a), and the pair fed control group (n = 20, group-b) received a normal diet with no vitamin deficiency. A second control group (group-c) was fed unrestrictedly with a standard diet (n = 19). All animals were examined for 25 weeks. The sensory nerve conduction velocity, the compound radicular, spinal and brain stem responses and the SEP were derived for tail and hind paw stimulation. The examination was re

Electrical stimulation of insular cortex elicits cardiac inhibition but insular lesions do not abolish conditioned bradycardia in rabbits.

Conscious rabbits received electrical stimulation of insular and more posterior perirhinal cortex through chronically implanted electrodes. Active sites for cardiovascular responses were found in both anterior and posterior insular cortex as well as more posterior perirhinal regions. Although differential response topographies occurred related to anterior versus posterior insular cortex, all heart rate responses consisted of bradycardia. Pharmacological manipulations revealed that this bradycardia was due to a combination of vagal and sympatho-inhibitory mechanisms. Some posterior sites yielde

Iontophoretic studies on pallidal neurones and the projection from the subthalamic nucleus.

The predominant response of pallidal neurones to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), glycine and dopamine when applied iontophoretically, was inhibition of firing rate. With dopamine some excitatory responses were observed, this never being the case with GABA or glycine. Picrotoxin reversibly blocked neuronal responses to GABA but not glycine in fourteen cases. Strychnine abolished glycine evoked inhibitions in seventeen cells while not affecting GABA responses. A number of cells were responsive to a stimulus delivered to the subthalamic nucleus (s.t.n.), an electrode array being used to establish

Studies on sacral-evoked potentials.

The bulbocavernosus reflex may be evoked electrically with a latency of approximately 35 msec. in normal male subjects. We have studied the sacral-evoked response in 116 individuals, 10 of whom were normal controls. For each study ipsilateral and contralateral responses were obtained from each side, resulting in 4 latency values. We herein describe the abnormalities in 54 patients with a variety of documented neurologic lesions. Our investigation reveals that the bulbocavernosus reflex has the characteristics of a cutaneous polysynaptic bilateral flexor response. The use of bilateral stimulati

Noradrenergic innervation of the rat hypothalamus:experimental biochemical and electron microscopic studies.

The concentrations of noradrenaline in individual hypothalamic nuclei and in the median eminence were measured 7-10 days following surgical transections of the lower brain stem or electrolytic lesions of the medullary noradrenaline-containing cell groups. Terminal degeneration in the hypothalamus was studied after the same surgical procedures. Direct, monosynaptic connections between the dorsomedial hypothalamic nucleus and all the noradrenaline-containing cell groups investigated were found. Degenerated synaptic boutons were demonstrated in the median eminence, arcuate, dorsomedial, ventromed

Synchronized rhythmic discharges of the secondary olfactory neurons in carp.

(1) Rhythmic and synchronized multiunit bursts of spike discharges, which were superimposed on the peaks of the oscillatory potentials of 4--10 Hz (olfactory tract waves), were induced in the olfactory tract fibers of the carp in response to olfactory stimulation. Suppression of the spike discharges was observed during the interburst periods of discharges. (2) Single-unit analysis revealed three types of discharge patterns in the olfactory tract fibers in response to olfactory stimulation: rhythmic excitation (Type 1), suppression (Type 2) and no response (Type 3). A synchronization of spike d

The use of evoked electromyographic responses in diagnosing lesions of the cauda equina.

An electrophysiologic technique to evaluate the anatomic integrity of the peripheral pathways to the bladder and sphincters is described. Evoked electromyographic responses of the anal sphincter are produced by stimulating the bladder wall and urethra. Impulses travel via the pelvic nerves and cauda equina to the conus medullaris, activating the pudendal nerve nucleus and resulting in contraction of the external anal sphincter. Lesions along this pathway produce either prolonged latencies and depressed responses or complete loss of response. Correlation of the results of this technique in 110

Dissecting the circuit for blindsight to reveal the critical role of pulvinar and superior colliculus.

In patients with damage to the primary visual cortex (V1), residual vision can guide goal-directed movements to targets in the blind field without awareness. This phenomenon has been termed blindsight, and its neural mechanisms are controversial. There should be visual pathways to the higher visual cortices bypassing V1, however some literature propose that the signal is mediated by the superior colliculus (SC) and pulvinar, while others claim the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) transmits the signal. Here, we directly test the role of SC to ventrolateral pulvinar (vlPul) pathway in bl

Blockade of the reticulospinal inhibitory pathway by anaesthetic agents.

1. Adult cats were decerebrated at the intercollicular level. The effect of the anaesthetic agents, pentobarbitone, paraldehyde, tribromethanol, chloralose and procaine on the reticulospinal inhibitory pathway, which produced inhibition of segmental reflex potentials, was analysed.2. The doses which blocked this inhibitory pathway did not exceed the doses required to produce surgical level anaesthesia with any of the drugs.3. After the reticular inhibition of the reflex potentials was abolished, the reflex potentials were augmented by reticular stimulation with a higher intensity. This was tho

Non-invasive brain stimulation and glymphatic function: an aquaporin-4 perspective.

The glymphatic system is a brain-wide fluid transport network in which cerebrospinal fluid enters along periarterial spaces, exchanges with interstitial fluid within the parenchyma, supports the redistribution and clearance of interstitial solutes, and drains toward meningeal and extracranial lymphatic pathways. Aquaporin-4 (AQP4), a water channel highly enriched at perivascular astrocytic endfeet, forms a polarized astroglial membrane interface that facilitates water exchange across the gliovascular compartment and critically shapes glymphatic transport. While non-invasive brain stimulation h

Conformational switching and spatial heterogeneity: Decoding SERPINE1/PAI-1as a multifaceted driver of tumor progression and therapy resistance.

Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), a central fibrinolytic regulator encoded by the SERPINE1 gene, is increasingly recognized as a context-dependent molecular hub in tumor biology. Despite its canonical protease-inhibitory role, elevated PAI-1 levels are associated with metastasis and poor prognosis in many malignancies, creating an apparent functional paradox. This review examines how reactive-center-loop conformational transitions, binding partners, cellular source, and anatomical compartment can alter SERPINE1 output. We compare tissue-specific circuits across lung, breast, colorecta
