Improving prehospital traumatic shock care: implementation and clinical effectiveness of a pragmatic, quasi-experimental trial in a resource-constrained South African setting.

OBJECTIVES: This project seeks to improve providers' practices and patient outcomes from prehospital (ie, ambulance-based) trauma care in a middle-income country using a novel implementation strategy to introduce a bundled clinical intervention. DESIGN: We conduct a two-arm, controlled, mixed-methods, hybrid type II study. SETTING: This study was conducted in the Western Cape Government Emergency Medical Services (EMS) system of South Africa. INTERVENTIONS: We pragmatically implemented a simplified prehospital bundle of trauma care (with five core elements) using a novel workplace-based, pe

Accumulation of Biological and Behavioral Data of Female Sex Workers Using Respondent-Driven Sampling: Protocol for a Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Respondent-driven sampling (RDS) is a nonprobability sampling technique that allows the extrapolation of its outcome to the target population. This approach is typically used to overcome the difficulties in studying hidden or difficult-to-reach groups. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this protocol is to generate a systematic review on the accumulation of biological and behavioral data of female sex workers (FSWs) through different surveys that use the RDS method from around the world in the near future. The future systematic review will discuss the initiation, actualization, and problem

Interventions to improve discharge from acute adult mental health inpatient care to the community: systematic review and narrative synthesis.

BACKGROUND: The transition from acute mental health inpatient to community care is often a vulnerable period in the pathway, where people can experience additional risks and anxiety. Researchers globally have developed and tested a number of interventions that aim to improve continuity of care and safety in these transitions. However, there has been little attempt to compare and contrast the interventions and specify the variety of safety threats they attempt to resolve. METHODS: The study aimed to identify the evidence base for interventions to support continuity of care and safety in the tr

Usability testing of the Internet program: "Teens Taking Charge: Managing My Transplant Online".

Adolescents with SOT demonstrate high rates of medication non-adherence and higher rates of graft loss compared to all other age groups. Self-management interventions encompass information-based material designed to achieve disease-related learning and changes in the participant's knowledge and skill acquisition, while providing social support. These interventions have had some success in chronic disease populations by reducing symptoms and promoting self-efficacy and empowerment. Using findings from a needs assessment, an Internet-based self-management program, Teens Taking Charge: Managing M

National young-driver survey: teen perspective and experience with factors that affect driving safety.

BACKGROUND: Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of fatality and acquired disability in adolescents. Young, inexperienced drivers are overrepresented in crashes. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to explore the adolescent perspective on driving safety to provide a better understanding of factors that influence safety and teenagers' exposure to driving hazards. METHODS: Adolescents generated, prioritized, and explained their viewpoint by using the teen-centered method. These viewpoints were obtained from a school-based nationally representative survey of 9th-, 10th-, and 11th-graders (N = 5665)

Treating incarcerated women: gender matters.

Research on incarcerated women has shown they have a high degree of comorbid psychopathology, including substance dependence, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), antisocial personality disorder (ASPD), and major depression. Incarcerated women differ from their community peers by having more symptoms related to addiction, ASPD, and PTSD. At the same time, incarcerated women are every bit as likely as incarcerated men to be dependent on drugs and almost as likely to be dependent on alcohol. What emerges is a picture of the incarcerated woman far more likely to have had traumatic experiences, i

A Bayesian Meta-Analysis of Lexical Priming and Reaction Time in Children With and Without Developmental Language Disorder.

PURPOSE: Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) exhibit linguistic difficulties that may stem from deficits in predictive processing. Several studies report impaired lexical priming in DLD groups compared to age-matched groups with typical language development (TLD). However, other studies report compensatory enhancement of lexical-semantic processing, leading to larger priming effects in DLD. METHOD: We used Bayesian meta-analysis to examine lexical priming and overall reaction time (RT) differences in age-matched groups of children with DLD and TLD (k = 19, m = 56, N = 360 DLD,

The effect of increased listening effort on the balance performance of patients with compensated vestibular lesion.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the effects of listening effort (LE) on balance in patients with compensated vestibular deficits compared to healthy peers. METHODS: The subjects included two main groups: a control group of 15 healthy subjects and a study group of 19 patients with compensated vestibular pathology. The computerized dynamic posturography test (CDP) was conducted without the speech-in-noise task as a baseline, then the participant was subjected to a dual task in which the auditory task (speech-in-noise sentences) was given as the primary task, and the balance function test wa

The impact of an online support group on patients' awareness of pregnancy-and lactation-induced osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND: Pregnancy and lactation-induced osteoporosis (PLO) is a serious and rare condition, which causes substantial physical and emotional distress. The rarity of PLO highlights the importance of alternative information sources such as online patient groups. This study aims to explore the experiences of PLO among members of a WhatsApp patient group and to analyze how participation in the group impacts members' knowledge about their condition, psychological well-being, and healthcare decisions. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included forty-six members of the "Smile Please" WhatsApp p

Clinical efficacy and safety evaluation of dexmedetomidine hydrochloride nasal spray for sedation before examinations in children aged 2 to 6 years: protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Children aged 2 to 6 years are prone to fear and resistance during medical examinations, necessitating sedation assistance. Traditional sedation modalities have limitations such as inconvenient operation, slow onset, or respiratory depression. Dexmedetomidine hydrochloride, a highly selective α₂-adrenergic receptor agonist, exerts sedative, analgesic, and anxiolytic effects with minimal respiratory and circulatory impacts. Its nasal spray is rapidly absorbed via the mucosa, avoiding the first-pass effect, and is thus suitable for young children. This study compares intranasal dexme

Fostering collaborative creativity and ensemble skills through virtual ensembles in hybrid music education: A systematic literature review.

The sudden change of music education to a hybrid form during the COVID-19 pandemic has made virtual ensembles the primary way of learning together. The authors aim through this review to understand how much digital platforms such as JackTrip, Jamulus, Zoom, and Soundtrap have affected the student engagement in musical ensemble practice. The paper emphasizes virtually choreographed concerts not only as a method for being able to continue training when difficulties arise but also to develop creative cooperation, self-management, and more advanced group playing skills. Seventeen peer-reviewed art

Differential predictors of smoking quit attempts between single- and poly-tobacco-using adolescents: a Korean national survey analysis.

BACKGROUND: Despite the rapid rise in adolescent poly-tobacco use, evidence on what drives quit attempts in this high-risk group remains limited compared to single-product users. This study identifies these differential predictors using a socio-ecological framework to inform tailored tobacco control strategies. METHODS: This study performed a cross-sectional analysis using complex sample logistic regression on pooled data from the 2023-2024 Korea Youth Risk Behavior Survey (KYRBS), a nationwide survey conducted in South Korea. Participants included a total of 5,127 current adolescent smokers,

Comparative effectiveness of horticultural therapy modalities for cognitive function and depressive symptoms in older adults with cognitive impairment: Protocol for a systematic review and network meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive impairment in older adults is often accompanied by depressive symptoms, leading to reduced quality of life and increased risk of disability and mortality. Horticultural therapy has been increasingly used as a non-pharmacological intervention; however, its effectiveness may vary across different intervention modalities and delivery characteristics. Existing meta-analyses have primarily focused on overall effects and have not compared different horticultural therapy modalities. This study aims to evaluate and rank the comparative effectiveness of horticultural therapy del

Alcohol Misuse Screening: Enhancing Rates by Integrating Information Technology Solutions in a Quality Improvement Project.

BACKGROUND: Alcohol misuse among teenagers poses serious public health risks. The screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment approach aims to prevent, discourage, and treat substance use issues. Despite recommendations to screen all trauma admissions of patients older than 12 years, implementation at trauma centers is often inconsistent and inefficient. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to assess the impact of integrating targeted information technology (IT) solutions into electronic health record (EHR) systems on improving the consistency and effectiveness of alcohol misuse screening

Evaluating the effectiveness and acceptability of free door-to-door transport to increase the uptake of breast screening appointments in Yorkshire: a cluster randomised GP feasibility trial (DOORSTEP protocol).

INTRODUCTION: Breast screening uptake remains low in parts of the UK, partly due to barriers including limited transport access. Offering free transport to screening appointments may help address this and improve uptake. This general practitioner (GP) cluster-randomised feasibility trial will assess whether offering free door-to-door transport alongside routine screening invitations increases attendance. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Eight general practices in Yorkshire will be randomised to either the intervention (routine invitation plus information about booking free door-to-door transport) or con

Global prevalence and risk factors of probable sarcopenia in older adults: a protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: With the acceleration of the global ageing trend, sarcopenia has become a major public health problem. Probable sarcopenia, characterised primarily by decreased muscle strength, represents an early, potentially reversible stage. However, epidemiological evidence on the prevalence and risk factors of probable sarcopenia in older populations remains limited, scattered, and methodologically inconsistent. Therefore, systematic reviews and meta-analyses are needed to synthesise current data, quantify global and regional prevalence, identify associated risk factors, and explore sources

Primary care brief mindfulness training for veterans with psychological distress: Protocol for a hybrid type I effectiveness-implementation randomized controlled trial.

Psychological distress, encompassing PTSD, depression, and anxiety-is highly prevalent among Veterans receiving care in Veterans Health Administration (VHA) primary care settings, yet it frequently goes untreated or undertreated. Traditional psychotherapies and psychiatric medications are often misaligned with Veterans' preferences for self-reliance, low-stigma formats, and skill-based approaches. Primary Care Brief Mindfulness Training (PCBMT) was developed as a brief, transdiagnostic, group-based mindfulness intervention co-facilitated by licensed mental health providers and Veteran peer spe
