Relationship of gender and eating disorder symptoms to reported cravings for food: construct validation of state and trait craving questionnaires in Spanish.

Using confirmatory factor analysis, we cross-validated the factor structures of the Spanish versions of the State and Trait Food Cravings Questionnaires (FCQ-S and FCQ-T; ) in a sample of 304 Spanish college students. Controlling for eating disorder symptoms and food deprivation, scores on the FCQ-T were higher for women than for men, but no sex differences were observed on the FCQ-S. Eating disorder symptomatology was predictive of trait cravings, whereas food deprivation was predictive state cravings. Trait cravings, but not state cravings, were more strongly associated to symptoms of anorex

Parent-daughter discrepancies in perception of family function in bulimia nervosa.

Eating disorders have traditionally been associated with disturbed family function. Most empirical data regarding this issue, however, were gathered from eating disorders patients. Attitudes, function, and inter-personal relationships were examined within 16 families with a member suffering from bulimia nervosa (BN) and compared to 16 matched healthy families. Perception of family function was significantly more derogatory in bulimic subjects than in their parents, while in control subjects and parents, perception was largely congruent. Subjects suffering from BN perceived their families as le

Panic control treatment for agoraphobia.

The goal of the present study was to compare the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral treatment for panic control alone versus this treatment containing an additional in vivo exposure component. The sample was comprised of 68 individuals who met diagnosis for panic disorder with agoraphobia. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two 16-week treatment conditions, panic control only and panic control with in vivo exposure. Assessments were repeated at baseline, mid-treatment, posttreatment, and 6-month follow-up using diagnostic and behavioral measures. Results indicated that the two treatme

Long-term adjustment in burn victims: a matched-control study.

BACKGROUND: To date, there is little information about how severely burned patients compare to unburned healthy individuals in terms of psychological profile and quality of life. As part of a larger study on the sensory consequences of burns, we assessed psychological functioning and quality of life in burned patients and unburned healthy control subjects. We also examined whether burn patients experiencing pain and/or paresthetic sensations (i.e. symptomatic patients) present a profile that is different from those who are asymptomatic. METHODS: Forty-nine burned patients (% total body surfac

Structure of the Anxiety Sensitivity Index psychometrics and factor structure in a community sample.

Converging evidence suggests that anxiety sensitivity (i.e., threatening beliefs regarding autonomic arousal) is a risk factor for anxiety pathology. Specification of premorbid risk factors requires exclusion of individuals with a history of spontaneous panic to ensure that anxiety sensitivity is not merely a consequence or concomitant of the experience of panic. However, the psychometrics and dimensional nature of anxiety sensitivity in such a sample is undetermined. The present study evaluated the factor structure of the Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI), a measure of anxiety sensitivity, in a

Changes in waiting-list patients over time: data on some commonly-used measures. Beware!

When samples of psychiatric patients are assessed on 2 occasions on state and trait measures, without any formal intervention having yet taken place, a mean change in scores towards less psychopathology is often observed. This re-test effect, which is a potential threat to the validity of longitudinal studies, has not been given serious attention by researchers using repeated administrations. The present study addressed this issue by examining re-test effects in 2 independent clinical samples with the Symptom Check List-90-Revised and other widely-used state and trait measures. Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome with and without obsessive-compulsive disorder compared with obsessive-compulsive disorder without tics: which symptoms discriminate?

Stereotyped repetitive behaviors occur in Gilles de la Tourette's Syndrome (GTS) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The present study was undertaken to compare the distribution of obsessive-compulsive and Tourette-related impulsive behaviors in GTS with (+) OCD, GTS without (-) OCD, tic-free OCD, and control subjects. Fourteen GTS + OCD, 18 GTS-OCD, 21 OCD-tic, and 29 control subjects were evaluated using a semistructured interview designed to assess GTS and OCD-related repetitive behaviors. Each reported item was evaluated on the presence of anxiety and goal-directedness. This informati

The clinical features of bipolar depression: a comparison with matched major depressive disorder patients.

BACKGROUND: Despite a resurgence of interest in the treatment of bipolar depression, there have been few controlled studies of the clinical characteristics of this condition. Identification of any distinctive clinical "signatures" of bipolar depression would be helpful in determining treatment options in the clinical setting. METHOD: From a cohort of 270 inpatients and outpatients assessed in detail during a DSM-IV major depressive episode, 39 bipolar I disorder patients were identified and closely matched with 39 major depressive disorder patients for gender, age, and the presence or absence

Anniversary reactions in Gulf War veterans: a follow-up inquiry 6 years after the war.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to assess the occurrence of anniversary reactions in Gulf War veterans 6 years after the conclusion of the war. METHOD: Subjects were administered questionnaires and asked to identify specific months of best and worst functioning and months of least or most symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for the 12 months before the study. Months of negative experiences were compared with previously documented dates of exposure to traumatic events during the war. Similar reports were also obtained from the veterans' spouses in order to assess corroborati

Social anxiety and history of behavioral inhibition in young adults.

To evaluate the relationship between the childhood temperament behavioral inhibition (BI) and anxiety symptomology, we investigated differences in retrospective reports of childhood BI among undergraduates reporting one of the following: (a) Social anxiety (n = 10), (b) generalized anxiety (n = 13), (c) both social and generalized anxiety (n = 15), and (d) minimal social and generalized anxiety (n = 38). Contrary to the hypothesis that BI acts as a nonspecific risk factor for anxiety symptoms, our findings revealed that a history of childhood BI was associated with symptoms of social phobia bu

Delayed neuropsychiatric effects of malaria in Ghana.

This study investigated the long-term emotional and cognitive effects of malaria infection in a sample of community resident nonmigratory Ghanaian adults, comparing 142 individuals with a documented history of clinical falciparum malaria and 30 controls without a lifetime medical diagnosis of malaria. Results were based on self-report inventory and interview-based approaches to assessment of emotional status as well as individual administration of the Mini-Mental State Examination. Our findings indicated the presence of an enduring, albeit subclinical, mixed anxiety-depression syndrome after m

Interoceptive exposure versus breathing retraining within cognitive-behavioural therapy for panic disorder with agoraphobia.

This study compared two components of a cognitive-behavioural treatment for panic disorder. Thirty-eight individuals with panic disorder and agoraphobia were randomly assigned to (a) cognitive restructuring, interoceptive exposure (i.e. repeated exposure to feared bodily sensations) and in vivo exposure to agoraphobic situations; or (b) cognitive restructuring, breathing retraining and in vivo exposure to agoraphobic situations. Assessments were conducted at pre-treatment, post-treatment and six months later. The treatments were equally effective on many measures. However, treatment that inclu

The aftermath of an industrial disaster.

An explosion in a Danish supertanker under construction in 1994 caused the death of six workers and injured 15. Six months later 270 workers took part in this study, which analyses the relationships between objective stressors, the workers' own feelings and the reactions of their families after the explosion together with training, attitude to the workplace, general out-look, and received crisis help. Traumatisation, coping style and crisis support was assessed via the Impact of Event Scale (IES), the Coping Styles Questionnaire (CSQ) and the Crisis Support Scale (CSS). Emotionally, workers an

Development of a suboutcome strategy to measure interpersonal process in psychotherapy from an observer perspective.

Based on increasing recognition that the therapeutic relationship is critical in psychotherapy, the goal of this study was to establish the psychometric properties of a suboutcome strategy that could identify important in-session events involving patient-therapist interactions. Ten third-party observers were calibrated on a circumplex measure of suboutcome, a shortened version of the Wiggins' Interpersonal Adjective Scale-Revised. These observers rated four sessions from each of 28 cases of short-term psychotherapy. Each session was rated by thirds and selected to represent each quartile of a

Patterns of change during cognitive behavioral treatment for panic disorder.

The present investigation examined patterns of change in basic features of panic and anxiety during cognitive behavioral treatment for panic disorder. Data were collected in the context of a study comparing the efficacy of cognitive therapy (CT) and relaxation training, both administered without exposure-based treatments of any kind. Thirty-six panic disorder patients completed 10 weeks of either CT or relaxation training. Weekly measures of panic frequency, state and trait anxiety, and associated fears were obtained. Data were examined using both multivariate techniques (which conceptualize c

The validation of the Trauma Symptom Checklist-40 (TSC-40) in a sample of inpatients.

This study examined the construct validity of the Trauma Symptom Checklist-40 (TSC-40; Elliot & Briere, 1992) in a sample of 130 female psychiatric inpatients. Consistent with other findings, the TSC-40 displayed criterion-related validity in relation to childhood sexual abuse. Survivors of sexual abuse obtained significantly higher scores than those without such a history on the overall TSC-40 and on each of the six subscales, except the Depression subscale. Convergent validity of three subscales was demonstrated, and divergent validity on the total TSC-40 and each of its subscales was establ

Voluntary and professional disaster-workers: similarities and differences in reactions.

Forty-three rescuers responding to a bus crash that killed 12 children and 4 adults and injured many more answered questionnaires at 1 and 13 months following the crash. This study compared the responses of the voluntary and professional helpers, using the Impact of Event Scale (IES) and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ). For all helpers taken together, the decline in IES-intrusion and IES-total scores was significant from 1 to 13 months. The voluntary helpers reported significantly more intrusion and avoidance on the IES at 1 month than professional helpers, and for avoidance the volunta

Phenomenology of intentional repetitive behaviors in obsessive-compulsive disorder and Tourette's disorder.

BACKGROUND: Recent evidence suggests that obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and Tourette's disorder are related and have overlapping clinical features. The purpose of this study was to test the following hypotheses regarding intentional repetitive behaviors in these two disorders: (1) In OCD without comorbid Tourette's, they are preceded by cognitive phenomena and autonomic anxiety, but not sensory phenomena, and (2) in Tourette's without comorbid OCD, they are preceded by sensory phenomena, but not cognitive phenomena nor autonomic anxiety.
