Poor saccadic control correlates with dyslexia.

A large group of subjects, either average readers or reading/spelling disabled subjects (n = 185; age between 8-25 years; M = 13 +/- 4 years), were tested in various standardized cognitive tasks including reading/spelling assessment and in non-cognitive saccadic eye movement tasks. Dyslexics were separated into a subgroup (D1) with deficits in the serial auditory short-term memory and a subgroup (D2) with an isolated low achievement in reading/writing. Control subjects had no relevant cognitive deficit of any type. Saccadic eye movements were measured in a single target and in a sequential-tar…

Process bigraphs and the architecture of compositional systems biology.

Building multiscale biological models requires the integration of independently developed submodels, which means moving shared variables between them and coordinating when each submodel runs. Existing tools typically address isolated biological mechanisms with specific numerical methods, rarely specify which variables each model reads and writes, how those variables are translated, and how model updates are synchronized. We present Process Bigraph, a framework for composing and simulating multiscale models. Process Bigraph generalizes the architectural ideas previously used in the Vivarium sof

Using Mask-Making to Foster Growth Mindset and Address Implicit Bias.

INTRODUCTION: Implicit biases, defined as unconscious attitudes influencing clinical decisions, can negatively affect patient care and contribute to health care disparities. Growth mindset-the belief that abilities can be developed through effort-encourages learners to view biases as modifiable rather than fixed. The mask expression project is an educational activity designed to foster growth mindset in first-year medical students and promote patient-centered care. METHODS: Three hundred five (305) first-year medical students completed the project during a service-learning course. Students wr

Enhancing bone metastasis CT report analysis: a comparison of local and proprietary large language models for privacy and resource efficiency.

BACKGROUND: Computed tomography (CT) reports for patients with bone metastases include key clinical details, but they are usually written as free text. Different doctors write reports in different ways, which makes it hard to extract information in a consistent way. Large language models (LLMs) may help pull out important details automatically. But using external models can raise data privacy and management concerns in hospitals. This study looked at whether proprietary models and locally deployed open-source LLMs can help extract key diagnostic information and create structured reports in set

Evaluation of Amiodarone Administration in Patients with New-Onset Atrial Fibrillation in Septic Shock.

Background and Objective: New-onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) is a common cardiac condition often observed in intensive care units. When amiodarone is used to treat this condition, either to maintain sinus rhythm after electrical cardioversion or to control heart rate, complications can arise when a systemic pathology is present. Systemic pathology can result in a decrease in cardiac output and blood pressure, making the management of NOAF and septic shock challenging. Limited international research exists on the coexistence of NOAF and septic shock, making it difficult to determine the optim

Clean intermittent catheterisation determinants and caregiver adherence in paediatric patients with spinal dysraphism and spinal cord injury in a paediatric spinal differences clinic: a mixed methods study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Clean intermittent catheterisation (CIC) is the standard of care for treating neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD), the most common bladder dysfunction in children diagnosed with spinal dysraphism (SD) and spinal cord injury (SCI). Failure to follow the prescribed CIC regimen results in urinary tract infections, incontinence and renal insufficiency. Adherence to CIC is suboptimal, with reported non-adherence rates of 18%-66%. Despite the efficacy of CIC, the research on CIC adherence is not well defined in the literature and even less for caregivers of children on C
