BAEP and autopsy findings in Wallenberg syndrome.

BAEPs were recorded in a 70-year-old man who had developed symptoms indicative of Wallenberg syndrome. He died, of extracerebral causes, shortly after hospitalization and an autopsy study was done on the brainstem lesions. Right ear stimulation disclosed BAEP abnormalities, but gave no indication of the level of the ischemic disorder. Histopathological examination showed a typical right dorsolateral medullary infarct. A detailed study of the acoustic pathways demonstrated their anatomical integrity. These findings confirm the uncertainty that still exists as to the exact location and type of g

Biomechanical Voice Parameters as Potential Biomarkers for Phenotype Differentiation in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background/Objectives: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a clinically heterogeneous neurodegenerative disease in which bulbar involvement frequently affects speech and voice production. Although acoustic voice analysis can detect phonatory alterations in ALS, its ability to differentiate clinical phenotypes remains limited. This study investigated whether biomechanical voice parameters provide complementary information for characterizing bulbar involvement across bulbar-onset ALS (ALS-B) and spinal-onset ALS (ALS-S) and explored their association with clinical and functional measures. A deep learning-based model for automatic identification of mesopelagic organisms from in-trawl cameras.

Mesopelagic organisms play an important role in the ocean's carbon transport and food webs and have been regarded as a potential harvestable resource. Their extensive aggregations in the upper thousand meters of the water column are frequently detected acoustically as deep scattering layers. However, extracting species and length composition from acoustics alone is challenging. Trawl catches, commonly used for ground-truthing acoustic data, suffer from size- and species-specific escapement and are spatially integrated along the trawl path. In-trawl cameras offer records at a finer spatial scal…

Effects of Semi-occluded Vocal Tract Training in Adult Choir Singers: A Randomized Controlled Trial Comparing Tube Phonation in Water and Humming.

BACKGROUND: There is a notable lack of empirical research on the effects of semi-occluded vocal tract (SOVT) training among choral singers. Existing studies primarily focus on immediate effects and group-level acoustic output, with limited attention to individual voice quality and intervention outcomes. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effects of a four-week video-based self-guided intervention using SOVT exercises, either tube phonation in water or humming, on individual voice quality, vocal capacities, and self-perceived vocal function in adult amateur choir singers. METHODS:

Accelerating Focused Ultrasound Modeling in Heterogeneous Spinal Cord Anatomy With Vision Transformer Operator Networks.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this work is to develop a data-driven framework for real-time prediction of focused ultrasound pressure fields in the spinal cord, addressing the limitations of computationally intensive acoustic simulations. Focused ultrasound therapy offers submillimeter precision for targeted treatment of spinal cord injuries, but its efficacy depends critically on transducer placement due to the spinal cord's complex geometry and acoustic heterogeneity across anatomical layers. METHODS: Conventional computational models rely on wave propagation simulations to generate patient-spe

Probing sensorimotor memory through the human speech-audiomotor system.

Our knowledge of human sensorimotor learning and memory is predominantly based on the visuospatial workspace and limb movements. Humans also have a remarkable ability to produce and perceive speech sounds. We asked whether the human speech-auditory system could serve as a model to characterize the retention of sensorimotor memory in a workspace that is functionally independent of the visuospatial one. Using adaptation to altered auditory feedback, we investigated the durability of a newly acquired speech-acoustical memory (8- and 24-h delay), its sensitivity to the manner of acquisition (abrup

Mechanisms of sound production in deer mice (Peromyscus spp.).

Rodent diversification is associated with a large diversity of species-specific social vocalizations generated by two distinct laryngeal sound production mechanisms: whistling and airflow-induced vocal fold vibration. Understanding the relative importance of each modality to context-dependent acoustic interactions requires comparative analyses among closely related species. In this study, we used light gas experiments, acoustic analyses and laryngeal morphometrics to identify the distribution of the two mechanisms among six species of deer mice (Peromyscus spp.). We found that high frequency v

Matrix metalloproteinase-2 and -9 contribute to functional integrity and noise‑induced damage to the blood-labyrinth-barrier.

The cochlear blood-labyrinth barrier (BLB), located in the stria vascularis, is critical for the homeostasis of cochlear solutes and ion transport. Significant disruption to the BLB occurs early during noise‑induced hearing loss. Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP)‑2 and ‑9 are important molecules known to be capable of degrading tight junction (TJ) proteins. The TJ proteins are important components of the extracellular matrix (ECM), required to maintain BLB integrity and permeability. Previous studies have demonstrated that MMP‑2 and ‑9, rich in healthy cochlea, serve an essential role in regulati

Syringeal specialization of frequency control during song production in the Bengalese finch (Lonchura striata domestica).

BACKGROUND: Singing in songbirds is a complex, learned behavior which shares many parallels with human speech. The avian vocal organ (syrinx) has two potential sound sources, and each sound generator is under unilateral, ipsilateral neural control. Different songbird species vary in their use of bilateral or unilateral phonation (lateralized sound production) and rapid switching between left and right sound generation (interhemispheric switching of motor control). Bengalese finches (Lonchura striata domestica) have received considerable attention, because they rapidly modify their song in resp

Distortion-product emissions in rabbit: I. Altered susceptibility to repeated pure-tone exposures.

An important issue in understanding the development of noise-induced hearing loss is whether prior acoustic overstimulation alters the susceptibility of the cochlea to further damage. The present work was designed to establish a model of activity-dependent changes in the susceptibility of the cochlea to acoustic overstimulation by regularly exposing the ear to a low-frequency pure tone. As a quantitative index of cochlear function, 2f1-f2 distortion-product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were monitored systematically over time in three groups of rabbits, with each group experiencing a unique p

A device-invariant multi-modal learning framework for respiratory disease classification.

Recent advances in cough sound analysis using deep learning techniques enable smartphone-based respiratory disease screening suitable for self-management care in a home setting, yet their utility is limited by device heterogeneity, population diversity, and challenges in multimodal integration. We propose a device-invariant, multimodal deep learning framework that jointly models cough acoustics, demographic data, and symptom descriptions for multi-label classification of adult respiratory diseases. To address the issues of device effect, an adversarial branch is embedded in the audio encoder t…
