INTRODUCTION: Despite global progress in reducing HIV incidence, adolescent girls and young women in sub-Saharan Africa remain disproportionately affected. Biomedical HIV prevention tools such as pre-exposure prophylaxis, condoms and HIV testing are effective but underutilized, especially within facility-based models. Schools represent consistent and scalable contact points for reaching adolescent girls and young women, yet evidence on the feasibility, accessibility and effectiveness of school-based biomedical HIV prevention interventions remains limited.
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aim

Pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) have proven outstanding potential to revolutionize biomedical research. Specifically, their capacity to form 3D multicellular systems that recapitulate organ development and biology, known as organoids, has transformed basic and translational research. The groundbreaking technology is also being applied to the intricate hypothalamus-pituitary (HP) axes, including the target organs (such as gonads, thyroid and adrenal glands). These HP axes govern critical physiological processes, including reproduction, metabolism and stress. Here, we provide an overview of PSC-de…

The Second International StemNet (Federation of Stem Cell Research Associations) meeting took place on 18-20 October 2023 in Brescia (Italy), with the support of the University of Brescia and the Zooprophylactic Institute of Lombardy and Emilia Romagna. The program of the meeting was articulated in nine sections: (1) Biomedical Communication in Italy: Critical Aspects; (2) StemNet Next Generation Session; (3) Cell-Free Therapies; (4) Tips and Tricks of Research Valorisation; (5) Stem Cells and Cancer; (6) Stem Cells in Veterinary Applications; (7) Stem Cells in Clinical Applications; (8) Organ

BACKGROUND: This study will assess the effect of sigmoidectomy in treating sigmoid colon cancer (SCC).
METHODS: This study will search the following databases from inception to the present: MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Scopus, OpenGrey, Chinese Biomedical Literature Database, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure. All electronic databases will be searched with no restrictions of language. Two researchers will independently handle all study selection, data extraction, and risk of bias, respectively. Any disparities between 2 researchers will be figured out by a th

Social disparities in the US and elsewhere have been terribly highlighted by the current COVID-19 pandemic but also an outbreak of state-sponsored violence. The field of nutrition, like other areas of science, has commonly used 'race' to describe research participants and populations, without the recognition that race is a social, not a biologic, construct. We review the limitations of classifying participants by race, and recommend a series of steps for authors, researchers and policymakers to consider when producing and reading the nutrition literature. We recommend that biomedical researche…

Amorphous silicon dioxide nanoparticles (SiNPs) are ubiquitous, and they are currently found in cosmetics, drugs, and foods. Biomedical research is also focused on using these nanoparticles as drug delivery and bio-sensing platforms. Due to the high potential for skin exposure to SiNPs, research into the effect of topical exposure on both healthy and inflammatory skin models is warranted. While we observe only minimal effects of SiNPs on healthy mouse skin, there is an immunomodulatory effect of these NPs in a model of allergic contact dermatitis. The effect appears to be mediated partly by ke…

Emerging and naturally occurring infectious diseases from bacterial and viral sources are constantly threatening humans and livestock. Recently, a variety of infectious diseases have emerged into previously disease-free areas, resulting in new epidemics. Consequently, governmental agencies and researchers in the area of biomedical research have started designing ways to prevent their further spread. Ongoing research activities are focused on developing therapeutic and prophylactic interventions against these emerging infections. Development and evaluation of vaccines, diagnostics and treatment…

Based on evidence from the orthopaedic, biomedical engineering, and oral and maxillofacial surgical literature, this paper discusses reported successes and failures of past alloplastic temporomandibular joint (TMJ) devices that have led to the development of present total temporomandibular joint replacement (TMJR) devices. The paper concludes with discussion of the ongoing research that will lead to future embodiment (materials, designs, and manufacture) advances in TMJR management of severe and debilitating end-stage TMJ disease, further improving patients' mandibular function, form, and over

Formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples are valuable archived bio-specimens of individuals and are commonly used in biomedical research. Here, we present a protocol for deep proteomic profiling of FFPE specimens using a spectral library-free approach. We describe steps for FFPE tissue collection, tissue lysis, homogenization, protein lysate cleanup, on-beads digestion, and de-salting. We then detail data acquisition and statistical analysis. This protocol is highly sensitive, reproducible, and applicable for high-throughput proteomic profiling and can be used on various types of specim…

Great progress has been made in two technologies related to biomedical research: (1) manipulating the genomes of cells; and (2) inducing stem cells in culture to differentiate into potentially useful cell types. These technologies can be used to create animal models of human disease and to provide cells for transplantation to ameliorate human disease. Both embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells have been studied for these purposes. Genetically modified somatic cells provide another source of cells for creating animal models and for cellular transplantation.
