The velocity of blood perfusion and pulsation curve in posterior ciliary arteries was evaluated in 180 patients (476 eyes) with primary glaucoma, aged 22 to 81 years. The investigations were carried out by Doppler's focused pulsating ultrasonographic method with probes of 2 and 8 MHz frequency connected with a TC-2-64 apparatus (made by EME of German Federal Republic). We describe two patients with a unilateral uveal effusion syndrome characterized by spontaneous ciliochoroidal and retinal detachment, shallow anterior chamber, poorly reactive pupil, and bulbar hypotony. A space-occupying substance of high molecular weight (sodium hyaluronate), injected into the anterior chamber, raised the intraocular pressure of these patients to 24 mm Hg. In vitro accumulation of radioactive para-aminohippuric acid (3H-PAH) and rubidium (86Rb+) by the anterior uvea, ciliary processes, and the choroid plexus was evaluated in tissues from newborn and various aged rabbits. Evidence is presented that serotonin acts as a neurotransmitter in the cornea of the adult rabbit. Serotonin was localized to granules in a sparse population of subepithelial corneal nerves by an electron microscopic histochemical procedure. Significant endogenous levels of serotonin and its principal metabolite, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, were detected in the central cornea by a fluorometric assay. The fibrinolytic activity of posterior ciliary arteries (PCA), dural vessels (DV), central retinal vessels (CRV), and pial plexus (PP) in 18 human eyes was studied by the fibrin-slide technique and PAS staining. Acitvity was measured on the basis of the minimal incubation time at which lysis appeared. A constant pattern of fibrinolytic activity was found. The PCA were the most active, followed by DV, CRV, and PP. With consideration of the assumed antithrombotic role of fibrinolysis, the results suggest that PCA are better protected against occlusion than CRV.
