BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1) and TRP ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) are involved in many biological processes, including nociception and hyperalgesia. Whereas the involvement of TRPV1 in psychiatric disorders such as anxiety and depression has been reported, little is known regarding the role of TRPA1 in these conditions.

The present study was performed to examine whether or not rebound insomnia is caused by an abrupt withdrawal of benzodiazepine hypnotics and tandospirone in rats. The effect of the methanolic extract of Newbouldia laevis seem on the central nervous system of rats and mice was investigated. The extract was tested on spontaneous motor activity, exploratory behaviour, apomorphine induced climbing behaviour in mice and pentobarbital induced hypnosis in rats. The methanolic extract of Clerodendrum phlomidis Linn. (MECP) leaves was evaluated for its psychopharmacological activities in several experimental models using Swiss albino mice and Wistar albino rats. A chronic alcoholic who had ingested a very high dose of disulfiram (29 g over a 1-week period) without simultaneous alcohol intake developed an acute encephalopathy and a severe flaccid tetraparesis that worsened over the course of several days, even after the intake of the drug had stopped. Recovery was both slow and incomplete. One year after intoxication, the patient still had distal weakness in the arms and legs, and hypesthesia in the hands and feet.
