The sanitary control of threatened wild animals is of pivotal interest for their conservation. This task, however, is highly complex in wildlife/livestock systems. In this paper we report findings from a 2-year cross-sectional study of the epidemiology and attempted control of a Sarcoptes mite infestation in the threatened cheetah population in Masai Mara (Kenya), and discuss its interaction with sympatric wild (lion, wildebeest and Thomson's gazelle) and domestic (dog, cattle and sheep) animals. Sarcoptes scabiei was isolated from cheetahs, Thomson's gazelles, wildebeests, lions, cattle, goat

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) transmission in northern Australia has, in the past, been facilitated by Culex annulirostris Skuse feeding on domestic pigs, the primary amplifying hosts of the virus. To further characterize mosquito feeding behavior in northern Australia, 1,128 bloodmeals from Cx. annulirostris were analyzed using a double-antibody enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Overall, Cx. annulirostris obtained > 94% of blood meals from mammals, comprising marsupials (37%), pigs (20%), dogs (16%), and cows (11%), although the proportion feeding on each of these host types varied betwe

The prevalence of reported domestic violence or intimate partner violence has greatly increased, with approximately 1.5 million women violently assaulted annually in the United States by an intimate partner. Strangulation is often seen in violence against women, including domestic violence cases. Strangulation is defined as "a form of asphyxia characterized by closure of the blood vessels or air passages of the neck as a result of external pressure on the neck." This is a 10-year case review of 102 living victims of strangulation who underwent medicolegal evaluation at the Clinical Forensic Me

Influenza A virus infections may spread rapidly in human populations and cause variable mortality. Two of these influenza viruses have been designated as select agents: 1918 H1N1 virus and highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) virus. Knowledge of the pathology of these virus infections in humans, other naturally infected species, and experimental animals is important to understand the pathogenesis of influenza, to design appropriate models for evaluation of medical countermeasures, and to make correct diagnoses. The most important complication of influenza in humans is viral pneumonia, whic

Worldwide, many women who experience domestic violence keep their experience secret. Few report to official bodies. In a national survey of abuse against women in Pakistan, we examined factors related to disclosure: women who had experienced physical violence telling someone about it. In focus groups, we explored why women do not report domestic violence. Nearly one third of the 23,430 women interviewed had experienced physical violence. Only 35% of them had told anyone about it, almost always someone within their own family. Several personal and family factors were associated with disclosure.

Coccidioidomycosis is a rare, often subclinical infection in domestic animals caused by the fungus Coccidioides immitis. Because of an apparent high incidence of coccidioidomycosis in Przewalski's horses (Equus przewalskii) housed at a single facility, necropsy records and biomaterials from animals that died between 1984 and 2000 were reviewed (n = 30, 15 males, 15 females). Coccidioidomycosis was the leading cause of death (33%) in this population with lesions in the lungs and tracheobronchial lymph nodes of all animals and variable involvement of the skeletal muscle, heart, kidney, liver, sk

The safety of the avermectin, selamectin, was evaluated for topical use on the skin of cats of age six weeks and above, including reproducing cats and cats infected with adult heartworms. All studies used healthy cats. Acute safety was evaluated in domestic cross-bred cats. Margin of safety was evaluated in domestic-shorthaired cats, starting at six weeks of age. Reproductive, heartworm-infected, and oral safety studies were conducted in adult, domestic-shorthaired cats. Studies were designed to measure the safety of selamectin at the recommended dosage range of 6-12mgkg(-1) of body weight. As

In Germany, 424 outbreaks of CSF in domestic pigs and a great number of cases in wild boar were recorded between 1990 and 1998. Most of the federal states ('Bundesländer') were affected. Epidemiological data from field investigations combined with genetic typing allowed to distinguish seven unrelated epidemics and a number of sporadic outbreaks in domestic pigs. Detailed epidemiological data was available for 327 outbreaks. It was found that 28% of these were primary outbreaks. Most of them were due to indirect or direct contact to wild boar infected with CSF virus or swill feeding. Infected w

We studied the environmental risk factors of Parkinson's disease (PD) in Finland, particularly those related to rural environment, in a prevalence material in 1992. The population numbered 196,864 people, including urban and rural areas. In this community-based study, we used a case-control method with personal investigation of the case subjects (n = 123) and matched control subjects (n = 246). Analyses were carried out by conditional logistic regression model. Case subjects had far fewer domestic animals at home during their lifetime, including cows, sheep, pigs, and chickens. The difference

PURPOSE: Acanthamoeba was isolated from the cornea of a soft contact lens wearer who had keratitis. The protozoan was also isolated from the contact lens storage case and the domestic water supply used to clean the case. Using morphologic features, all three isolates were identified tentatively as A. griffini, a species not previously associated with keratitis. Complete small subunit ribosomal RNA gene (18S rDNA) sequence analysis was used to characterize further the three isolates.
METHODS: 18S rDNA was polymerase chain reaction-amplified from whole cell DNA derived from amoebal lysates. The

The study investigates mortality from cancer and other diseases in a cohort of wives of asbestos cement workers in Casale Monferrato (northwest Italy). After the exclusion of women with an occupational record in the asbestos cement industry, the cohort comprised 1964 women. Their domestic exposure was estimated according to their husbands' periods of employment in the plant: 1740 had a period of domestic exposure whereas the remaining 224 married an asbestos cement worker only after he definitely stopped his activity in the asbestos cement plant; these have, therefore, been considered as unexp

Babesiosis is a zoonosis caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Babesia. It has a worldwide distribution and affects many kinds of mammals, principally domestic animals and humans. Because there are no safe and effective vaccines available, the treatment and control for babesiosis continues to involve the use of chemotherapeutics. For years, only a few drugs have been used for clinical treatment, namely atovaquone plus azithromycin or clindamycin plus quinine for human, and imidocarb dipropionate and diminazene aceturate for domestic animals. Although screening and developing alternative d

Here, we report a case of proliferative sparganosis caused by Spirometra sp. 3 infection in a domestic dog in Pennsylvania, USA. Proliferative sparganosis is an unusual and often fatal condition caused by the multiplication of the larval cestode stage, Spirometra spp., within various organs and tissues of intermediate hosts, including humans, dogs, and cats. Although domestic dogs and cats are often definitive hosts of Spirometra spp., they can also act as paratenic or second intermediate hosts. These animals may develop high parasite burdens within muscle, connective tissue, or visceral organ

We analyzed the publication and submission statuses of Korean medical journals from 2010 to 2024, amidst challenges impacting researchers. Data from 58 domestic journals identified through the 2023 JCR database were used to assess publication status, while data from the Journal of Korean Medical Science (JKMS) were utilized to examine submission status. The proportion of published original articles by domestic authors decreased by 3% in 2024 compared to 2023. Submissions to JKMS also decreased overall, except for slight increases in May and October 2024. In contrast, international submissions

Tritrichomonas foetus is a parasitic protozoan that causes large-bowel disorders in domestic cats worldwide. Between 2020 and 2024, 1606 feline stool samples were tested for T. foetus. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of T. foetus infection among cats with diarrhea reported within the last 6 months, and to assess age and sex as risk factors for T. foetus infection. The diagnostic method of choice was nested PCR with modifications to reduce potential reaction inhibition. Overall, T. foetus DNA was detected in 10.6% (170/1606) of cats, with the highest prevalence observed in

Polycystic echinococcosis is a parasitic disease caused by cestodes of Echinococcus vogeli, which occurs in rural and wild areas of Central and South America. Its definitive hosts are Speothos venaticus (bush dog) and Canis familiaris (domestic dog), while Cuniculus paca (paca) serves as the intermediate host. Humans become accidental hosts by consuming food or water contaminated with eggs of this helminth. In the Amazon, due to geographic, economic, and cultural factors, rural populations often consume wild meat as a main protein source. The viscera of pacas are used to feed domestic dogs, pe

The demand for unconventional pets has markedly increased in recent years worldwide. Among them, many species of mammals are frequently kept in domestic environments in close contact with their owners. Pets often harbor zoonotic microorganisms without showing clinical signs; therefore, owners do not suspect that they can be a source of pathogens. Pets of several unconventional species may act mainly as maintenance hosts for leptospires; they are clinically silent but shed the spirochetes in their urine representing a serious risk of infection for people living in the same domestic area.
