[Ear findings in patients with cleft lip-jaw-palate. Experiences from a cleft consultation].

We organized a regular otorhinolaryngologic consulting hour within the framework of interdisciplinary cooperation of medical care for patients with cleft palate. Different diseases of the middle ear are discussed in our study. There is a high incidence of middle ear effusion in patients with cleft palate. Most of the cases with middle ear effusion were treated with tympanotomy tubes. Patients with cleft palates had poorer findings than those with total cleft of lip, upper jaw, hard and soft palate.

Sudden deafness and vertigo due to inner ear hemorrhage--a temporal bone case report.

A case of sudden deafness with vertigo shortly before death is reported in a patient with disseminated adenocarcinoma of the breast. Examination of the temporal bones revealed extensive perilymphatic hemorrhage as the probable cause of the deafness. The pathophysiology of deafness due to inner ear hemorrhage is discussed.

High-resolution computed tomography of the middle ear and mastoid. Part II: Tubotympanic disease.

Of more than 200 patients who underwent high-resolution computed tomography (CT) of the middle ear, the vast majority had tubotympanic disease in one of its forms: middle ear effusion, tympanosclerosis, granulation tissue, tympanic membrane retractions, or acquired cholesteatoma. The CT appearance of each of these conditions is discussed and illustrated. Emphasis is placed on the differential diagnosis of tubotympanic disease by determining dependent from nondependent soft-tissue opacity using two CT projections.

Sudden hearing loss in the contralateral ear in postoperative acoustic tumor: three case reports.

Careful presurgical otologic assessment of the contralateral ear in acoustic tumor patients is essential, not only to establish baseline data but more importantly to resolve the intense patient anxiety that arises almost immediately when the diagnosis is presented. Any subsequent reduction in hearing acuity in the contralateral ear after the tumor ear has been deafened, poses serious psychological, socio-economic and medical problems. Three detailed case reports of sudden hearing loss in the contralateral ear of postoperative acoustic tumor patients are presented. The lesion sites include: the…

Language delay in infants associated with middle ear disease and mild, fluctuating hearing impairment.

We report on a study of the relationship between early persistent middle ear disease and early language learning for 35 infants. Three independent measurements were used to evaluate hearing sensitivity and the status of the middle ear. Language development was assessed using two standardized measurements for both comprehension and expression. The otitis-prone group had a 71.5% incidence of language delay with 42.9% delayed greater than 6 months. For the normal group 21.4% had language delay, with one child having delay greater than 6 months. The feasibility of including language screening for …

Tympanoplasty and recurrent disease: sniff-induced high negative pressure in the middle ear space.

Eustachian tube function was studied in 18 patients who had developed recurrent middle ear disease after middle ear surgery on one ear. The types of recurrent disease included recurrent retraction of the tympanic membrane, recurrent cholesteatoma, columella penetration, postoperative perforation, and infection. Pressures in both of the middle ears, as well as in the nasopharynx, were recorded simultaneously. The ears of patients in this study were found to be able to equalize pressure as well as did normal ears examined previously. However, in 12 of the 18 ears that had been operated on, failu…

Simple methods for determining the affected side and performing otolith repositioning in cases of lateral semicircular canal-benign paroxysmal positional vertigo-canalolithiasis: Healthy-ear-down 135° maneuver and affected-ear-down 135° maneuver.

OBJECTIVE: To develop simple and effective methods for determining the affected side and promoting early symptom resolution in lateral semicircular canal-benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (L-BPPV) due to canalolithiasis, including its geotropic (L-BPPV-can-geo) and apogeotropic (L-BPPV-can-apo) variants. METHODS: A total of 146 cases of paroxysmal geotropic positioning nystagmus (PGPN, L-BPPV-can-geo) and 285 cases of persistent apogeotropic positional nystagmus (PAPN) due to peripheral vestibular disorders were analyzed. Positional and positioning nystagmus were observed and recorded usin…

Middle ear ventilation status postoperatively after translabyrinthine resection of vestibular schwannoma with mastoid obliteration and Eustachian tube occlusion: is the Eustachian tube enough to ventilate the middle ear without the mastoid air cell system?

BACKGROUND: Gas pressure balance is essential for maintaining normal middle ear function. The mucosal surfaces of the middle ear, the mastoid air cell system (MACS), and the Eustachian tube (ET) play a critical role in this process; however, the extent that each of these factors contributes to overall middle ear ventilation is unknown. The objective of this study was to determine if the ET alone can maintain normal middle ear pressure without the MACS. To do this, we reviewed subjects who had their MACS completely removed with translabyrinthine (TL) surgery for vestibular schwannoma. METHODS:…

First Documented Case of Complete Leucism in the Long-Eared Owl (Asio otus) in Bulgaria.

Leucism is a hereditary anomaly affecting the coloration of avian species. It is defined by partial or complete loss of plumage coloration. Unlike albinism, which results in ocular depigmentation, leucistic birds have normal iris color. Pigment abnormalities within wild bird populations are rare. In the order Strigiformes, such cases have mainly been recorded as individual reports. This research introduces the first documented case of complete leucism in the Long-eared owl (Asio otus) in Bulgaria. A retrospective analysis of clinical records from the Wildlife Rescue Center ("Green Balkans", St…

Microtia Reconstruction in Children Based on the Nagata Method: Modifications of Ear Framework Fabrication and Outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Microtia reconstruction using the Nagata technique is seldom offered to younger patients under 10 years, as there may not be enough cartilage for reconstruction. In this study, we present our 13-year experience of microtia reconstruction by using the modified Nagata method in patients aged ≤10 years. METHODS: Technical modifications included a refinement to the first-stage framework fabrication, whereby the base frame was sufficiently broadened to accommodate the helical crus. Besides shaping the helix, the eighth costal cartilage was split into another 2 pieces, followed by a nov…

Exact Forecasting and Event-Based Prediction in Annual EARS-Net Antimicrobial Resistance Series.

This study investigated how cumulative antimicrobial resistance time series from EARS-Net can be exploited to support anticipation of future resistance dynamics. A pooled forecasting framework was first applied to predict future resistance percentages across multiple time horizons. Exact forecasting provided only limited practical advantage for surveillance purposes, as most future changes were relatively small and larger increases were difficult to capture reliably. The research focus was therefore redirected toward prediction of events of substantial future resistance increase, and a corresp…

Objective: To explore the health-related and socioeconomic factors affecting the incidence of complications in patients with middle ear cholesteatoma in Western Yunnan. Methods: A retrospective analysis was performed on complete clinical and socioeconomic data of 326 patients with middle ear cholesteatoma confirmed by postoperative pathology at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture People's Hospital from January 2014 to January 2024, and the occurrence of complications was recorded. There were 160 males and 166 females, aged 2-81 years, with a mean age of 44 yea…
