If malunion occurs after shaft fractures of the femur or tibia, it often corrects itself spontaneously. If the remaining growth period is +/- 2 years, side to side dislocations, shortening and varus deformities (up to 15 degrees) are equalized. Valgus, recurvation and antecurvation equalize much more slowly and rotation deformities only at the femur. The indication to perform a corrective osteotomy before the end of growth is therefore rare, and the remaining axis deviations have a good long-term prognosis as far as arthritic changes are concerned. Exceptions of this rule are rotation deformit

Severe trauma of the acetabulum is uncommon in children. However, it must be remembered that these apparently benign lesions can be responsible for serious complications. In a group of 31 children under the age of 16 years presenting with such lesions, 12 already had an adult type skeleton. Amongst the remaining children, 15 presented with fractures or fracture-dislocations of the acetabulum and 4 presented with marginal avulsions of the acetabular ridge. Two epiphysiodeses of the Y cartilage were observed, one in a 2 year old child, revealed by acetabular dysplasia at the age of 8 years, and

The authors describe their own method of fragments using Kirshner Wire in supracondylar extension fractures of the humerus. Of a total of 118 extension fractures 74 were of a III degree dislocation type. In 16 of these, the medial percutaneous fixation method was implemented. Indications for surgical intervention included those cases in which good positioning of the fragments could not be maintained due to edema, in cases in which flexion at the elbow caused a loss of the radial pulse, and in cases of manifested primary injury of the ulnar nerve. Following the repositioning of the fragments, 2

Introduction Low-energy femoral neck fracture (FNF) in the elderly is a serious injury. For patients with multiple existing comorbidities and frailty, the risk of complications, poor functional outcomes, and premature death may be higher. The treatment aims for immediate weight-bearing, preferably by hemiarthroplasty (HA). Previous research has focused on prosthetic joint infection and dislocation after HA. In this study, we aimed to describe the possible surgical consequences of periprosthetic fracture after HA. Methods HA patients with a periprosthetic fracture occurring between 2009 and 201

Proximal humeral fractures are common with a bimodal distribution and sex discrepancy, affecting younger men and older women. The presentation of a proximal humeral fracture can vary greatly because of this bimodal distribution and the associated differences in mechanism of injury. Initial management should involve assessment of life- and limb-threatening injuries as outlined by the British Orthopaedic Association Standards for Trauma, with particular attention paid to axillary nerve function and vascular status. Initial imaging should involve orthogonal X-rays in three planes to determine fra

BACKGROUND: Total hip arthroplasty (THA)after previous hip surgery increases the procedure complexity and complication rate. We investigated the complication rates following conversion to total hip arthroplasty from three hip surgeries, namely plate fixation of the intertrochanteric fracture, nailing of the trochanteric fracture, and hemiarthroplasty of the hip.
METHODS: This retrospective study was conducted using the PearlDiver database (www.pearldiverinc.com, Colorado Springs) and identified all patients undergoing THA between 2010 and 2019. Among this group, we included all patients who h

PURPOSE: To investigate the injury mechanism, diagnosis, and treatment of varus-posteromedial rotational instability of the elbow joint in children.
METHODS: According to the diagnostic criteria of varus posteromedial rotational instability of elbow joint, 16 children with coronoid process fractures treated in our department from July 2013 to July 2017 were re-evaluated. There were 14 males and 2 females, aged 7 to 14 years, with an average age of 11.6 years. Eight cases on left and 8 cases on right side. An associated elbow dislocation occurred in 8 of 16 cases. Nine patients were treated wi

BACKGROUND: Injuries and resulting stiffness around joints, especially the elbow, have huge psychological effects by reducing quality of life through interference with normal daily activities such as feeding, dressing, grooming, and reaching for objects. Over the last several years and through numerous research results, the myofibroblast-mast cell-neuropeptide axis of fibrosis had been implicated in post-traumatic joint contractures. Pre-clinical models and a pilot randomized clinical trial (RCT) demonstrated the feasibility and safety of using Ketotifen Fumarate (KF), a mast cell stabilizer t

INTRODUCTION: Isolated fractures of the humeral trochlea are exceedingly rare because of the trochlea's deep intra-articular position and anatomical protection from direct trauma. The articular notch formed by the olecranon and coronoid processes shields the trochlea, which also lacks direct muscular or ligamentous attachments. Such fractures typically occur in conjunction with injuries involving the capitellum or the medial and lateral condyles.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a 35-year-old male who sustained an isolated trochlear fracture following a physical assault. Initial anteroposte

Introduction: A suture enlocation (SE) approach is proposed to manage comminuted intra-articular mandibular condyle fractures not amenable to open reduction internal fixation approaches. The SE approach is an effective operative option for the treatment of condylar fractures with the combination of fracture dislocation, malocclusion, comminution, and inadequate surface area for open fixation techniques. This study describes the SE approach, outcomes, and complications. Methods: The SE technique is described, and the health records of patients treated with the SE approach are reviewed. Outcome …

PURPOSE: Optimal anatomical reduction and stable fixation of acetabular fractures are important in avoiding secondary dislocation and osteoarthritis. Biomechanical studies of treatment options of acetabular fractures aim to evaluate the biomechanical properties of different fixation methods. As the setup of the biomechanical test can influence the experimental results, this review aimed to analyze the characteristics, comparability and clinical implications of studies on biomechanical test setups and finite element analyses in the fixation of acetabular fractures.
METHODS: A systematic litera

BACKGROUND: Neer Type IIb lateral clavicle fractures typically lead to dislocation of the medial fragment. Therefore, most surgeons recommend surgical treatment for such a fracture pattern. The use of a locking compression plate with a lateral extension has produced satisfactory results in various studies over recent years. Double-plate fixation is a common technique in the treatment of complex distal radius fractures. The authors use this technique as a routine procedure in the treatment of Neer type IIb fractures. In this biomechanical testing study, the mechanical properties of the two tech

BACKGROUND: Closed reduction and splinting are generally recommended in the acute management of nasal fractures. Although open reduction is recommended for more severe nasal fractures, immediate functional and cosmetic open rhinoplasty following nasal fractures has not been described for Asian noses.
OBJECTIVES: The authors document their experiences with combining open reduction of acute nasal fractures with simultaneous cosmetic correction of preexisting aesthetic concerns in an Asian population.
METHODS: Twenty-five Asian patients underwent primary functional and cosmetic open rhinoplasty

In the Innsbruck University Clinic for Traumatology during the years 1978-1985, altogether 17,999 patients received initial treatment for injuries incurred through Alpine skiing. 3240, or 18% of these injuries were trauma to the hand. The most frequently injured area was the thumb, with 1995, or 61.6% of the cases. The most common hand injury in skiing is the socalled "ski thumb", the lesion of the ulnar ligament of the metacarpal-phalangeal joint. Finger injuries accounted for 262 cases, or 8%. The capsule-ligament lesions predominated, especially the palmar capsule lesion of the proximal int
