Individualized Homeopathic Treatment in Women with Recurrent Cystitis: A Retrospective Case Series.

BACKGROUND: Recurrent urinary tract infections are of importance for public health as most clinicians are faced with repeated and long-term administration of broad-spectrum antimicrobial agents leading to an increased risk of resistant bacteria. One encouraging treatment approach may be individualized homeopathy. CASE REPORTS: Here, four female cases with recurrent urinary tract infections are reported. They were treated successfully with the homeopathic strategy after several conventional approaches revealed no improvement. The follow-up period was a minimum of 3 years and the frequency of e

Novel circuit biomarker of impulsivity and craving in male heroin-dependent individuals.

INTRODUCTION: The striatum mediates reward processing in addiction, and previous fMRI (functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging) studies have revealed abnormal striatofrontal functional connectivity in heroin addiction. However, little is known about whether there is abnormal structural connectivity of the striatal circuit in heroin addiction. This study investigated the structural connectivity of striatal circuits in abstinent heroin-dependent individuals (HDIs) without methadone treatment. METHODS: Forty-three (age: 38.8 ± 7.1) male HDIs and twenty-one (age: 42.4 ± 7.9) matched healthy control

Individual Differences in Thresholds and Consumer Preferences for Rotundone Added to Red Wine.

Rotundone is an aromatic compound found in the skin of some grapes (e.g., Shiraz, Noiret) that contributes peppery notes to wines made with these varieties. There may be a specific anosmia for rotundone, as some individuals are unable to detect it even at high concentrations, despite otherwise normal olfaction. This may affect perception of and preference for rotundone-containing wines. Here, we report rotundone detection thresholds (orthonasal n = 56; retronasal n = 53) and rejection thresholds (n = 86) in red wine for a convenience sample of non-expert consumers in Pennsylvania. Focus groups

Tibiofemoral forces during FES rowing in individuals with spinal cord injury.

The purpose of this study is to determine the tibiofemoral forces during functional electrical stimulation (FES) rowing in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). We analysed the motion of five participants with SCI during FES rowing, with simultaneous measurements of (i) three-dimensional marker trajectories, (ii) foot reaction forces (FRFs), (iii) ergometer handle forces, and (iv) timestamps for electrical stimulation of the quadriceps and hamstrings muscles. We created full-body musculoskeletal models in OpenSim to determine subject-specific tibiofemoral forces during FES rowing. The pea

Inter- and Intrafamilial Phenotypic Variability in Individuals with Collagen-Related Osteogenesis Imperfecta.

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is a rare genetic disorder also known as a "brittle bone disease." Around 90% of patients with OI harbor loss-of-function or dominant negative pathogenic variants in the COL1A1 and COL1A2 genes, which code for collagen type I α1 and α2 chains. Collagen-related forms of the disorder are classified as Sillence OI types I-IV. OI phenotype expression ranges from mild to lethal. The current study aims to evaluate associations between interfamilial and intrafamilial phenotypic variability and genotype characteristics of patients with collagen-related OI. The study was ba

Administering drugs to an individual in a non-pathological situation: The Caster Semenya case.

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has barred individuals whose circulating testosterone levels are higher than 5 nmol/L from competing in women's competitions in middle-distance track events. To become eligible, they must take anti-testosterone treatment to achieve the appropriate testosterone levels. The 2019 decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport has brought the spotlight back on Caster Semenya's case and on the ethics of testing the testosterone levels of sports persons with or without consent, imposing anti-testosterone treatment in order to qualify to p

Nine newly identified individuals refine the phenotype associated with MYT1L mutations.

Both point mutations and deletions of the MYT1L gene as well as microdeletions of chromosome band 2p25.3 including MYT1L are associated with intellectual disability, obesity, and behavioral problems. Thus, MYT1L is assumed to be the-at least mainly-causative gene in the 2p25.3 deletion syndrome. Here, we present comprehensive descriptions of nine novel individuals bearing MYT1L mutations; most of them single nucleotide variants (SNVs). This increases the number of known individuals with causative deletions or SNVs of MYT1L to 51. Since eight of the nine novel patients bear mutations affecting

Atypical Neurogenesis in Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells From Autistic Individuals.

BACKGROUND: Autism is a heterogeneous collection of disorders with a complex molecular underpinning. Evidence from postmortem brain studies have indicated that early prenatal development may be altered in autism. Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) generated from individuals with autism with macrocephaly also indicate prenatal development as a critical period for this condition. But little is known about early altered cellular events during prenatal stages in autism. METHODS: iPSCs were generated from 9 unrelated individuals with autism without macrocephaly and with heterogeneous genetic b

Maxillary incisor enamel defects in individuals born with cleft lip/palate.

Cleft lip with or without cleft palate (CLP) is considered the most frequent congenital malformations of the head and neck, with cleft individuals exhibiting more chances of presenting abnormalities such as developmental defects of enamel (DDE). Matrix metallopeptidase 2 (MMP2) is a membrane-bound protein with collagen-degrading ability and has important roles in tooth formation and mineralization. The aim of this study was to evaluate the frequency, location, severity and extent of DDE found in the maxillary incisors for groups of individuals born with CLP, as well as understanding their rela

Transanal irrigation: is it the magic intervention for bowel management in individuals with bowel dysfunction?

Historically, the use of colonic irrigation or transanal irrigation (TAI) has been viewed as an alternative therapy for the treatment of a wide variety of conditions not relating to bowel dysfunction, including nausea, fatigue, depression, headache, anxiety and rheumatism. However, these days it is viewed as an effective treatment in individuals who may present with bowel dysfunction and related symptoms of constipation and faecal incontinence. Such individuals would include people with neuropathic bowel disorders, conditions that affect sphincter control or bowel motility disorders. injury to

Landing Stiffness Between Individuals With and Without a History of Low Back Pain.

CONTEXT: Reduced spinal stabilization, delayed onset of muscle activation, and increased knee joint stiffness have been reported in individuals with a history of low back pain (LBP). Biomechanical adaptations resulting from LBP may increase the risk for future injury due to suboptimal loading of the lower-extremity or lumbar spine. Assessing landing mechanics in these individuals could help identify which structures might be susceptible to future injury. OBJECTIVE: To compare vertical and joint stiffness of the lower-extremity and lumbar spine between individuals with and without a previous h

Individuals with nonsyndromic orofacial clefts have increased asymmetry of fingerprint patterns.

Dermatoglyphic patterns on the fingers often differ in syndromes and other conditions with a developmental component, compared to the general population. Previous literature on the relationship between orofacial clefts-the most common craniofacial birth defect in humans-and dermatoglyphics is inconsistent, with some studies reporting altered pattern frequencies and/or increased asymmetry and others failing to find differences. To investigate dermatoglyphics in orofacial clefting, we obtained dermatoglyphic patterns in a large multiethnic cohort of orofacial cleft cases (N = 367), their unaffec

Variable pulmonary manifestations in Chitayat syndrome: Six additional affected individuals.

Hand hyperphalangism leading to shortened index fingers with ulnar deviation, hallux valgus, mild facial dysmorphism and respiratory compromise requiring assisted ventilation are the key features of Chitayat syndrome. This condition results from the recurrent heterozygous missense variant NM_006494.2:c.266A>G; p.(Tyr89Cys) in ERF on chromosome 19q13.2, encoding the ETS2 repressor factor (ERF) protein. The pathomechanism of Chitayat syndrome is unknown. To date, seven individuals with Chitayat syndrome and the recurrent pathogenic ERF variant have been reported in the literature. Here, we descr

Novel biomarkers for early targeted and individualized treatment in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

BACKGROUND: The programmed cell death protein-1 (PD-1) and its ligands (PD-L 1 and 2) suppress immune responses, thus promoting self-tolerance. Among the immunomodulatory cells, acting through the PD-1 pathway, are the B-regulatory cells (Bregs). The role of the PD-1 pathway in Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) has not been adequately studied. AIMS OF THE STUDY: To investigate the immunophenotypic profile of T- and B-cells and the activity of the PD-1 pathway in JIA patients. More specifically, we will examine the levels of: a) the soluble form of PD-1 (sPD-1), b) Bregs; and the expression
