Sleep and mental disorders: A meta-analysis of polysomnographic research.

Investigating sleep in mental disorders has the potential to reveal both disorder-specific and transdiagnostic psychophysiological mechanisms. This meta-analysis aimed at determining the polysomnographic (PSG) characteristics of several mental disorders. Relevant studies were searched through standard strategies. Controlled PSG studies evaluating sleep in affective, anxiety, eating, pervasive developmental, borderline and antisocial personality disorders, attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and schizophrenia were included. PSG variables of sleep continuity, depth, and architecture

Deep brain stimulation for psychiatric disorders.

BACKGROUND: Deep brain stimulation (DBS), an established treatment for some movement disorders, is now being used experimentally to treat psychiatric disorders as well. In a number of recently published case series, DBS yielded an impressive therapeutic benefit in patients with medically intractable psychiatric diseases. METHODS: This review of the use of DBS to treat psychiatric disorders is based on literature retrieved from a selective Pubmed search for relevant keywords, reference works on the topic, and the authors' own research. RESULTS: Studies have been performed on the use of DBS to…

[Pathogenesis of obsessional states against a psychopathic background].

The paper is concerned with a clinical study of 37 psychopaths with obsessional symptoms: 24 anancasts and 13 psychasthenics. In 14 patients the obsessional ideas were combined with obsessional actions, in 28 cases there was a defect of integrative automatized motions, in 6 cases--tics, in 2--writing spasms and in 1 case--a spastic torticollis without symptoms of an organic lesion of the nervous system. A hyperkinesis of the tic-type, professional dyskinesia and possibly obsessional actions may be explained by a functional dissociation of the neocrotex with subcortex and limbico-reticular comp

Compliance with the 24-hour movement guidelines and weight status: results from 40,970 adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity, which has been associated to heart disease, metabolic syndrome and disorders such as feelings of worry and sadness in children is one of the prominent obstacles for the health of the general population in the recent decades. A great deal of research shown the connection between meeting the 24-hour movement guidelines and weight status in young people. The purpose of this study is to find the correlation between compliance with the 24-hour movement guidelines and weight status in a large collection of U.S. teenagers, and to examine whether these connections vary b

Variants in RHOBTB2 associated with cancer and rare developmental and epileptic encephalopathy.

RHOBTB2 is a member of the Rho GTPases subfamily of signaling proteins, known tumor suppressors whose loss of function and decreased expression is associated with cancer onset. Beyond its cancer-related role, RHOBTB2 is implicated in rare neurodevelopmental disorders, specifically RHOBTB2-related disorders, recognized in 2018 as a subtype of developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEE). Common symptoms of these disorders include early-onset epilepsy, severe intellectual disability, microcephaly, and movement disorders. Few studies have investigated patient variants associated with RHOBTB…

Consensus practice recommendations for management of sleep dysfunction in Parkinson disease.

INTRODUCTION: Sleep disturbances are highly prevalent in people with Parkinson's disease (PD). Adhering to practical, evidence-informed guidelines enhances care delivery and quality of life in PD. Therefore, we sought to develop consensus statements on screening, diagnosis, and treatment of sleep dysfunction in PD. METHODS: The application of a modified Delphi panel allowed for the synthesis of expert opinions into clinical statements. Consensus was predefined as a level of agreement of 100% for each item. Four virtual Delphi rounds were held. After selecting the topics for consideration, 2-3

Investigating the effect of obsessive-compulsive disorder on clinical symptoms of temporomandibular joint disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a group of clinical conditions involving muscles of mastication, temporomandibular joint (TMJ), and related structures or both. TMD is characterized by facial pain in TMJ and muscles of mastication, limitation or deviation of jaw movement, and TMJ sounds during jaw movement and function. The highest risk of TMD prevalence is between 18 and 24 years, and a relationship is between chronic TMD and psychological disorders such as stress and depression. The knowledge of the function of this joint and those with TMD symptoms when visiting the dentist

The Motor Basis for Misophonia.

Misophonia is a common disorder characterized by the experience of strong negative emotions of anger and anxiety in response to certain everyday sounds, such as those generated by other people eating, drinking, and breathing. The commonplace nature of these "trigger" sounds makes misophonia a devastating disorder for sufferers and their families. How such innocuous sounds trigger this response is unknown. Since most trigger sounds are generated by orofacial movements (e.g., chewing) in others, we hypothesized that the mirror neuron system related to orofacial movements could underlie misophoni

The human pupil and face encode sound affect and provide objective signatures of tinnitus and auditory hypersensitivity disorders.

Sound is jointly processed along acoustic and emotional dimensions. These dimensions can become distorted and entangled in persons with sensory disorders, producing a spectrum of loudness hypersensitivity, phantom percepts, and - in some cases - debilitating sound aversion. Here, we looked for objective signatures of disordered hearing (DH) in the human face. Pupil dilations and micro facial movement amplitudes scaled with sound valence in neurotypical listeners but not DH participants with chronic tinnitus (phantom ringing) and sound sensitivity. In DH participants, emotionally evocative soun

The ignored structure in female fertility: cilia in the fallopian tubes.

Cilia in the fallopian tubes (CFT) play an important role in female infertility, but have not been explored comprehensively. This review reveals the detection techniques for CFT function and morphology, and the related analysis of female infertility and other gynaecological disorders. CFT differentiate from progenitor cells, and develop into primary cilia and motile cilia. Primary cilia coordinate multiple signalling pathways, and motile cilia produce laminar flow through bidirectional intraflagellar transport, which drives the movement of oocytes and gametes. Several methods for quantitative

Delayed levodopa-responsive parkinsonism following acute midbrain injury.

Acute midbrain injury may cause both hyperkinetic movement disorders and parkinsonism. The temporal interval between the insult and the emergence of hyperkinetic disorders can last years. A delayed appearance of parkinsonism, on the other hand, was rarely described. We present three cases of male patients (50-, 58- and 28-year-old) who developed levodopa-responsive parkinsonism 20, 8 and two years, respectively, after acute brain insult involving the midbrain. Insults included subcortical intracerebral hemorrhage dissecting into the midbrain, embolic basilar occlusion and trauma. A fluorodopa …

Multiple Neurodegenerative Pathologies in an Alzheimer's Disease Patient Treated with Fornical Deep Brain Stimulation.

As an established treatment for movement disorders, deep brain stimulation (DBS) has been adapted for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) by modulating fornix activity. Although it is generally regarded as a safe intervention in patients over 65 years of age, the complex neurophysiology and interconnection within circuits connected to the fornix warrants a careful ongoing evaluation of the true benefit and risk potential of DBS on slowing cognitive decline in AD patients. Here we report on a patient who died long after being implanted with a DBS device who donated her brain for neuropath…

Catechins enhance skeletal muscle performance.

Muscle-related disorders, such as sarcopenia and cachexia, caused by aging and chronic diseases can lead to the loss of muscle mass and strength to different degrees, severely affecting human health. Globally, tea is one of the three most popular beverages, and its major active ingredient catechins have been reported to delay muscular atrophy and enhance movement. However, currently, there is no systematic review to elaborate its roles and the associated mechanisms. This article reviews the (1) functions and mechanisms of catechins in the differentiation of myogenic stem cells, biogenesis of m

Now is the Critical Time for Engineered Neuroplasticity.

Recent advances in neuroscience and devices are ushering in a new generation of medical treatments. Engineered biodevices are demonstrating the potential to create long-term changes in neural circuits, termed neuroplasticity. Thus, the approach of engineering neuroplasticity is rapidly expanding, building on recent demonstrations of improved quality of life for people with movement disorders, epilepsy, and spinal cord injury. In addition, discovering the fundamental mechanisms of engineered neuroplasticity by leveraging anatomically well-documented systems like the spinal cord is likely to pro…

The contribution of single case studies to the neuroscience of vision.

Visual neuroscience is concerned with the neurobiological foundations of visual perception, that is, the morphological, physiological, and functional organization of the visual brain and its co-operative partners. One important approach for understanding the functional organization of the visual brain is the study of visual perception from the pathological perspective. The study of patients with focal injury to the visual brain allows conclusions about the representation of visual perceptual functions in the framework of association and dissociation of functions. Selective disorders have been
