Effects of transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation on perioperative anxiety in patients undergoing laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery: a study protocol for a double-blind, prospective, single-centre, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative anxiety, characterised by tension, worry or fear from preoperative to postoperative phases, is prevalent among patients with colorectal tumour. It exacerbates intraoperative haemodynamic instability, postoperative pain and delirium and prolongs hospital stay, underscoring the need for effective management. Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation (TaVNS) represents a promising non-invasive intervention for anxiety alleviation. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of TaVNS in reducing perioperative anxiety in patients with colorectal tumour, thereby providi

Research priorities in pleural disease: study protocol for a joint patient-provider Delphi consensus statement.

INTRODUCTION: There is a wide global variation in research priorities and current clinical practise among pleural medicine practitioners. Research performed today will inform future clinical practice, but the patient's voices are often not heard in setting the research agenda. The International Multicentre Pleural Research Collaborative (IMPACT) European Respiratory Society (ERS) Clinical Research Collaboration (CRC) aims to present a consensus document from both pleural disease experts and patients, which will guide pleural disease research in the immediate future. The objective is to ensure

Endovascular thrombectomy alone versus intravenous thrombolysis plus endovascular thrombectomy on acute basilar artery occlusion (ATTENTION IV): study protocol for a multicentre randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: The DEVT and DIRECT-MT trials showed that endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) alone is non-inferior to intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) followed by EVT in achieving 90-day functional independence for stroke patients with large-vessel occlusion (LVO). However, it is unclear whether EVT alone is non-inferior to IVT followed by EVT among patients with acute basilar artery occlusion (BAO). Therefore, additional studies are needed to explore the potential benefits of EVT alone in these patients. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The ATTENTION IV trial is a prospective, multicentre, non-inferiority, bl

Ultrasound-Guided Cervical Vagus Nerve Block for Postoperative Opioid Consumption After Thoracoscopic Lung Surgery: Study Protocol for a Randomized Controlled Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Effective analgesia after video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) remains challenging, as conventional regional techniques mainly target somatic pain but insufficiently address visceral nociception transmitted via the vagus nerve. Cervical vagus nerve block (CVNB) is a novel ultrasound-guided regional technique that may attenuate vagally mediated visceral pain. However, high-quality randomized evidence on its analgesic efficacy and safety after VATS is lacking. This trial aims to evaluate whether adding CVNB to standard thoracic paravertebral block (TPVB) reduces postoperativ

Leveraging the role of families in decision-making to inform a program of HPV-based self-collection for cervical screening in Tamil Nadu, India: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: Collectivist cultures often perceive health seeking and decision-making to be less individual and more communal, with most decisions made in consultation with a spouse or other family members. These dynamics are further complicated by heightened cultural sensitivities for women seeking care for reproductive needs. Our study explored community perceptions of cervical screening and recommendations for self-collection for Human Papillomavirus (HPV) testing in south India. METHODS: We conducted eight focus group discussions (FGDs) with 54 men (mean age 48 years) and 10 FGDs with 67 women

Prevention of postamputation pain with targeted muscle reinnervation (PreventPAP trial): protocol for a national, multicentre, randomised, sham-controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: In the Netherlands, approximately 2200 major amputations of the lower extremities are performed each year, the majority in vascular patients. Around 61% of these patients will develop postamputation pain (PAP). PAP is a severe, lifelong, disabling condition profoundly affecting quality of life. During amputations, the common practice is to cut the nerves without employing nerve-surgical techniques to prevent chronic pain due to neuroma formation. In recent years, targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) has been the most frequently studied technique for treating PAP, inhibiting neurom

The Impact of Labor Mismatch on Achieving Breastfeeding Goals Among Non-Hispanic Black Women in North Carolina.

OBJECTIVES: Despite growing attention on the issue, racial disparities in birth and breastfeeding outcomes in the United States persist. However, few biocultural studies have explored the interaction between these outcomes specifically in non-Hispanic Black (NHB) women. The present study examines the risks for a mismatch between women's birth intent and birth outcome (labor mismatch) and its impact on achieving their breastfeeding goals. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study used data from the Mothers & Others study, a two-group randomized control trial aimed at reducing rapid weight gain among N

Aggression, Suicidality, and Emotion Profiles in Youth: Links to Early Life Adversity.

Suicidality and physical aggression are leading, related youth public health concerns. Yet, whether adolescents who harm themselves, others, or both differ emotionally and etiologically remains unclear. To address this, adolescents from a prospective population-based birth cohort reported their suicidality, physical aggression, depression/anxiety symptoms, anger, and callousness (N = 1637). Distinct latent harm-emotion profiles were identified, which were linked to perinatal and childhood experiences. A six-profile solution was retained: Low harm (79.5%), moderate suicidality (6.5%), high suic

Analysis of the analgesic mechanism of TENS-WAA in colonoscopy using the EEG-fNIRS system: a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Colonoscopy is an essential procedure for the early diagnosis of colorectal conditions; however, over 60% of patients undergoing non-sedated colonoscopy report moderate to severe pain. This study aims to investigate the central analgesic mechanisms of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation based on wrist-ankle acupuncture theory (TENS-WAA). A multimodal approach combining electroencephalography (EEG) and functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) will be employed to assess pain-related brain activity, with artificial intelligence applied to model the relationship between

The hypotension prediction index in major abdominal surgery - A prospective randomised clinical trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Patients undergoing major abdominal surgery are at increased risk of developing perioperative hypotension, which is associated with increased mortality and morbidity. Despite using advanced technologies such as evaluating arterial pressure derived cardiac output, anaesthetic management to maintain hemodynamic stability is still reactive when the clinical decision is made after hypotension has developed. Previous perioperative goal-directed studies have not proven the benefits of this approach with high certainty. A new, approved technology called the Hypotension Prediction Index (H

Effects of core training based on respiratory therapy on elderly stable COPD patients in the rehabilitation hospital: a study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Elderly stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients frequently experience walking dysfunction. Research indicates that balance training holds promise for enhancing walking stability in these individuals, whereas respiratory therapy (RT) can enhance walking endurance effectively. However, existing balance training regimens tailored for COPD are intricate and lack specificity, and the impact of combined RT on patients' walking function remains uncertain. This study aims to assess the influence of core training (CT) integrated with RT on walking function among elder

Adverse Childhood Experiences Among Adolescents With Body Dysmorphic Disorder: Frequency and Clinical Correlates.

Increasing empirical attention has been given to the role of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in the development and maintenance of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD). Yet, current research has predominantly focused on adult and nonclinical BDD samples, and little is known about relevance of ACEs in adolescent BDD. The present study examined (a) the frequency of ACEs in adolescents with a primary diagnosis of BDD (n = 50) versus obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) (n = 50) and (b) the clinical profile of ACE-exposed youth with BDD. ACEs were ascertained through a systematic search of electroni
