Active oxygen processing for acrylic intraocular lenses to prevent posterior capsule opacification.

PURPOSE: To evaluate active oxygen processing on the surface of acrylic intraocular lenses (IOLs) to prevent secondary posterior capsule opacification (PCO). SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, Dokkyo Medical University School of Medicine, Mibu City, Tochigi, Japan. METHODS: Acrylic IOLs were prepared, and ultraviolet (UV)/ozone (UV/O3) or argon plasma was irradiated to the surface of the IOLs. Elemental analysis (electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis [ESCA]) of the IOL surfaces was performed to confirm surface modification. Changes produced by UV/O3 or argon plasma treatment were ex

Complications of sequential keratorefractive and vitreoretinal surgery.

We describe 2 complications of sequential keratorefractive and vitreoretinal surgery not previously reported. Epithelial ingrowth occurred in 1 patient who experienced laser in situ keratomileusis flap dehiscence and replacement during vitreoretinal surgery. In the second patient, a flap could not be created with a microkeratome or a femtosecond laser because of anatomical changes from previous vitreoretinal surgery. Anatomic repair of the vitreoretinal pathology and completion of keratorefractive surgery with good visual outcomes were achieved in both patients. Flap stability should be an imp

Stimulus-driven versus pilocarpine-induced biometric changes in pseudophakic eyes.

PURPOSE: Most trials that study the lens movement of accommodative intraocular lens (IOLs) use pilocarpine to stimulate ciliary muscle contraction. The aim of this study is to assess in vivo whether a more physiologic, stimulus-driven accommodation is comparable to pilocarpine-induced IOL movement. DESIGN: Controlled patient- and examiner-masked clinical trial. PARTICIPANTS: The study population included 38 eyes with accommodative IOL implants (1CU) and a control group of 28 eyes with conventional open-loop IOLs. METHODS: A high-precision biometry technique, partial coherence interferometry

Interim results of the United States investigational device study of the Ophtec capsular tension ring.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of the Ophtec capsular tension ring (CTR) in providing capsular support during and/or after cataract extraction in cases of a weak or partially broken ciliary zonule. DESIGN: Phase III multicenter, nonrandomized, investigational device study. PARTICIPANTS: Twelve investigators at 9 sites enrolled 224 subjects and placed 255 CTRs. METHODS: Capsular tension rings were placed in patients who were found to have a weakened or partially broken ciliary zonule comprising <34% of the circumference of the lens capsule. Two CTR models were evaluated, with n

Effect of retrobulbar versus subconjunctival anaesthesia on retrobulbar haemodynamics.

AIM: To investigate the effect of retrobulbar and subconjunctival anaesthesia on retrobulbar haemodynamics by colour Doppler imaging. METHOD: 39 patients (mean age 71 (SD 9) years; 19 females, 20 males) undergoing planned cataract surgery were included in the prospective study. Colour Doppler imaging (Siemens Sonoline Sienna, Germany) was performed before, directly after either subconjunctival (16 patients) or retrobulbar (23 patients) anaesthesia, and after cataract surgery to measure the peak systolic (PSV) and end diastolic velocities (EDV) in the ophthalmic artery (OA), central retinal ar

Ultrasonic and biochemical evaluation of human diabetic lens.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the ultrasonic attenuation and amount of soluble proteins of human diabetic lens. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The examina … ging system using 7 MHz A-mode probe and the ultrasound attenuation coefficient was calculated. The phacoemulsification technique has been used for cataract extraction. Gel chromatography of the supernatant fraction on the Sepharose CL 6B column was used for fractionation of soluble lens proteins. [Filtering glaucoma surgery as outpatient procedure].

BACKGROUND: While cataract surgery is nowadays performed routinely as an outpatient procedure, performing filtering glaucoma surgery under these conditions remains questionable due to the more demanding perioperative management. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Outpatient filtering glaucoma surgery (trabeculectomy and combined phakoemulsification and trabeculectomy (phakotrab)) is performed at the Ophthalmology Department of Kantonsspital Winterthur when requested by the patient. This paper provides a retrospective review of all outpatient filtering glaucoma procedures performed in the last three and a

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the long-term effectiveness of glaucoma management in patients undergoing primary glaucoma triple procedure (PGTP) with and without adjunctive subconjunctival mitomycin-C (MMC). DESIGN: Case-controlled study. PARTICIPANTS: Of the 203 eyes of 203 primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients who had undergone PGTP and in whom reliable Humphrey visual fields had been obtained both before and after surgery at 13.5 +/- 8.9 and 27.9 +/- 8.9 months, 124 of the 144 eyes that received MMC during surgery were matched to the other 59 eyes that did not with respect to cup-to-disc r

Comparison of extracapsular and phaco-emulsification cataract extraction techniques when combined with intra-ocular lens placement and trabeculectomy: short-term results.

UNLABELLED: BACKGROUND METHODS: Fifty patients who had undergone combined extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE), intra-ocular lens (IOL) placement and trabeculectomy (ECCE-trab) and 50 who had undergone combined cataract phaco-emulsification, IOL placement and trabeculectomy (phaco-trab) were reviewed over a period of 12 months. RESULTS: Postoperatively, intra-ocular pressure (IOP) in both eyes fell significantly (P < 0.005). Initially, IOP fell to roughly equal degrees (mean IOP being 14 mmHg at 3 months; P = 0.84). At 12 months, IOP in the phacotrab group was slightly lower than that in
