Excitability of facial nucleus and related brain-stem reflexes in hemifacial spasm, post-facial palsy synkinesis and facial myokymia.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the electrophysiological excitability characteristics of the facial nucleus and related structures in hemifacial spasm … mal controls in the 3 electrophysiological tests. Latencies of the lateral and synkinetic spread responses were significantly prolonged in the earlier PFPS group as compared to HFS. In two-point stimulation, both groups showed a greater latency shift in late responses, again more pronounced in PFPS. CONCLUSIONS: PFPS and HFS cases had similar enhanced …

Regulation of stearoyl-CoA desaturase-1 after central and peripheral nerve lesions.

BACKGROUND: Interruption of mature axons activates a cascade of events in neuronal cell bodies which leads to various outcomes from functional regeneration in the PNS to the failure of any significant regeneration in the CNS. One factor which seems to play an important role in the molecular programs after axotomy is the stearoyl Coenzyme A-desaturase-1 (SCD-1). This enzyme is needed for the conversion of stearate into oleate. Beside its role in membrane synthesis, oleate could act as a neurotrophic factor, involved in signal transduction pathways via activation of protein kinases C. RESULTS:

Ischemic stroke related to intracranial branch atheromatous disease and comparison with large and small artery diseases.

BACKGROUND: The mechanism of ischemic stroke in intracranial branch atheromatous disease (BAD) is different from large artery atherothrombotic disease (LAD) or lacunar infarction (LACI). The concept of BAD is underused in clinical practice and research. METHODS: Patients admitted over 24-months with ischemic stroke caused by atherosclerotic disease were reviewed retrospectively and classified according to radiological±clinical criteria into LAD, BAD and LACI. The BAD cases were further divided into 5 BAD syndromes. Clinical characteristics, vascular risk factors, results of vascular workup an

Respiratory rhythms generated in the lamprey rhombencephalon.

Brainstem networks generating the respiratory rhythm in lampreys are still not fully characterized. In this study, we described the patterns of respiratory activities and we identified the general location of underlying neural networks. In a semi-intact preparation including the brain and gills, rhythmic discharges were recorded bilaterally with surface electrodes placed over the vagal motoneurons. The main respiratory output driving rhythmic gill movements consisted of short bursts (40.9+/-15.6 ms) of discharge occurring at a frequency of 1.0+/-0.3 Hz. This fast pattern was interrupted by lon

Postnatal development of masseteric motoneurons in congenital hypothyroid rats.

It has been known that an intact thyroid hormone is obligatory for the attainment of the normal masticatory function at the time of weaning. Following induced maternal thyroid hypo-function, the development of masseter motoneurons was determined at postnatal days 1, 7, 15 and 23 (weaning time), using retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in the normal and hypothyroid pups. Based on the HRP labeling profile (strong and weak), the soma area of the masseteric labeled motoneurons was measured in each group. No significant morphological differences were observed at the end of the fir

The neuropathology of a chromosome 17-linked autosomal dominant parkinsonism and dementia ("pallido-ponto-nigral degeneration").

A group of similar autosomal dominant hereditary neurodegenerative disorders have been linked to chromosome 17 in thirteen kindreds. One of these disorders, known as pallido-ponto-nigral degeneration (PPND), is characterized by extensive degeneration of the globus pallidus and substantia nigra as well as accumulation of abnormally phosphorylated tau proteins. The authors now present comprehensive data on the cellular and molecular pathology of PPND, allowing its classification among chromosome 17-linked neurodegenerative disorders as well as its classification among sporadic and other familial

Recurrent Hemorrhagic Venous Infarctions Caused by Thrombosis of a Pontine Developmental Venous Anomaly and Protein S Mutation.

A 34-year-old man presented with an acute onset of upbeat nystagmus, slurred speech, and limb and truncal ataxias. The patient had a history of limb ataxia and gait disturbance previously treated as brainstem encephalitis with corticosteroids 3 years previously. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed pontine developmental venous anomaly (DVA) and hemorrhagic infarction within the drainage territory of the DVA. Three months later, the patient exhibited recurrent limb ataxia, double vision, and numbness of the left side of the body. The brain magnetic resonance imaging revealed recurrent hemorr

Presynaptic calcium influx controls neurotransmitter release in part by regulating the effective size of the readily releasable pool.

The steep calcium dependence of synaptic strength that has been observed at many synapses is thought to reflect a calcium dependence of the probability of vesicular exocytosis (p), with the cooperativity of three to six corresponding to the multiple calcium ion binding sites on the calcium sensor responsible for exocytosis. Here we test the hypothesis that the calcium dependence of the effective size of the readily releasable pool (RRP) also contributes to the calcium dependence of release at the calyx of Held synapse in mice. Using two established methods of quantifying neurotransmitter relea…

Recovery in a patient with locked-in syndrome.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Sildenafil citrate has been shown to enhance neurogenesis, angiogenesis, synaptogenesis, and neurological outcome by augmentation of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) levels in animal models of ischemic stroke. Whether sildenafil citrate may be helpful for recovery in human stroke is unknown at this time. METHODS: A 41-year-old woman with locked-in syndrome due to pontine infarction began receiving 150 mg of oral sildenafil citrate daily on a compassionate use basis in August 2003 and continues treatment at this time. Magneto-encephalography (MEG) was performed at

Endotracheal tube electrodes to map and monitor activities of the vagus nerve intraoperatively. Technical note.

Difficulty swallowing due to damage of the vagus nerve is one of the most devastating complications of surgery in and around the medulla oblongata; therefore, intraoperative anatomical and functional evaluation of this nerve is crucial. The authors applied endotracheal tube surface electrodes to record electromyography (EMG) activity from vocal cords innervated by the vagus nerve. The vagal nucleus or rootlet was electrically stimulated during surgery and vocalis muscle EMG activities were displayed by auditory and visual signals. This technique was used successfully to identify the vagus moto

Radiological diagnosis of mass lesions within and adjacent to the foramen magnum.

Masses within or adjacent to the foramen magnum may present difficult clinical problems. They may sometimes be misdiagnosed as degenerative disease of the central nervous system, cervical spondylosis, or even cervical disk disease. In most cases, roentgenographyis necessary for proper diagnosis. The anatomy of the region of the foramen magnum is reviewed and 13 cases representing various diseases are presented. Alterations in the regional arterial and venous anatomy are emphasized.
