Understanding Gender-Specific Cycles of Nicotine Dependence and Mental Health: Evidence for Dynamic and Reciprocal Relationships.

OBJECTIVE: Nicotine dependence is a significant public health issue linked to various psychosocial problems. However, previous research has largely examined these relationships in a unidirectional manner or at the between-person level, overlooking the potential for within-person fluctuations over time. This study uses a longitudinal approach to investigate the bidirectional associations between nicotine dependence, internalizing problems, and externalizing problems among adults. In addition, we examine gender as a potential moderator of these relationships. METHOD: Using data from the Populat

Parenting stress mediates the association between cyanotic congenital heart disease and internalising problems in children and adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Children and adolescents with cyanotic congenital heart disease have been found to be at an increased risk of internalising problems. The underlying mechanisms, however, remain uncertain. AIMS: To examine the association between cyanotic congenital heart disease and internalising problems and assess whether parenting stress mediates this association. METHOD: The study sample was 699 children and adolescents (aged 2-17 years) with congenital heart disease (253 with cyanotic congenital heart disease and 446 with acyanotic congenital heart disease) in Taiwan. The Child Behavior Chec

Markers for context-responsiveness: Client baseline interpersonal problems moderate the efficacy of two psychotherapies for generalized anxiety disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To follow-up a randomized clinical trial that compared the acute and long-term efficacy of 15 sessions of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) versus CBT integrated with motivational interviewing (MI) for severe generalized anxiety disorder (GAD; Westra, Constantino, & Antony, 2016), we (a) characterized the sample's baseline interpersonal problems, and (b) analyzed the role of several theory-relevant problems as moderators of the comparative treatment effects on outcome. METHOD: We first compared clients' (N = 85) baseline interpersonal problems profile to a general clinical sample.

Bullying among young adolescents: the strong, the weak, and the troubled.

OBJECTIVES: Bullying and being bullied have been recognized as health problems for children because of their association with adjustment problems, including poor mental health and more extreme violent behavior. It is therefore important to understand how bullying and being bullied affect the well-being and adaptive functioning of youth. We sought to use multiple data sources to better understand the psychological and social problems exhibited by bullies, victims, and bully-victims. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: Analysis of data from a community sample of 1985 mostly Latino and black 6th

Psychopharmacotherapy of Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms within the Framework of Tourette Syndrome.

While Behavioral Therapy (BT) should be recommended as the first step in the treatment of OCD as well as TS, medication can be added for augmentation and in certain situations (e.g. family preference, BT not available or feasible) the priority may even reverse. This narrative review is given on the complexity of drug treatment in patients comorbid with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and Tourette syndrome (TS) and other tic problems. OCD with TS is a co-occurring combination of the two generally delimitable, but in detail, also overlapping disorders which wax and wane with time but have di

Interactive Voice Response System: Data Considerations and Lessons Learned During a Rectal Microbicide Placebo Adherence Trial for Young Men Who Have Sex With Men.

BACKGROUND: Rectal microbicides, if proven effective, may aid in reducing human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) incidence; however, demonstration of efficacy and effectiveness is contingent on accurate measurement of product adherence. Delays in self-report, in particular, may affect the accuracy of behavioral data. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to capitalize on mobile phone use by young men who have sex with men (YMSM), and examine the use of an interactive voice response system (IVRS) by YMSM aged 18-30 years enrolled in a multisite, 12-week microbicide safety and acceptability trial.

Measuring canine impulsivity: translation and validation of a German dog impulsivity assessment scale.

Psychometric questionnaires are used to assess canine temperament, aiding in the identification of behavioral and affective traits. Impulsivity, defined as a predisposition toward rapid, unplanned reactions to internal or external stimuli, is one such trait and is considered a contributing factor in various behavioral problems, including aggression. This study aimed to translate and validate the Dog Impulsivity Assessment Scale (DIAS) for use in German-speaking populations. Data from 2,788 dog-caretaker dyads were subjected to an exploratory factor analysis (EFA), revealing a four-factor struc

Early Childhood Caries and Its Association With Behavior in Preschool Children.

Background and aim Early childhood caries (ECC) is a profoundly impactful multifactorial condition that not only influences a child's overall well-being but also diminishes their quality of life. Given the limited availability of literature on the relationship between children's behavior and ECC, the present study utilized a standardized assessment tool to assess the association between ECC and behavioral changes in preschool children. Methodology Our study cohort consisted of 120 healthy preschool children, aged 18-60 months, evenly divided into two groups: caries-free (group I) and caries ac

Parenting Style of Elderly Parents and Its Impact on Adolescent Behavior: A Case Report.

Adolescence is a critical transition period between childhood and adulthood. They experience biological, emotional, and social changes and require constant affection, support, and supervision during this period. Adolescents often face stressors from various sources, which can exacerbate behavioral issues. A 13-year-old boy, born 15 years after marriage by in vitro fertilization (IVF) to parents in their late 40s, was brought to the outpatient department. He had presented with complaints of getting angry, stealing money, lying, and threatening his parents for his demands for the past six months

Activity in a prefrontal-periaqueductal gray circuit overcomes behavioral and endocrine features of the passive coping stress response.

The question of how the brain links behavioral and biological features of defensive responses has remained elusive. The importance of this problem is underscored by the observation that behavioral passivity in stress coping is associated with elevations in glucocorticoid hormones, and each may carry risks for susceptibility to a host of stress-related diseases. Past work implicates the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in the top-down regulation of stress-related behaviors; however, it is unknown whether such changes have the capacity to buffer against the longer-lasting biological consequences

Support and negation of colorectal cancer risk prevention behaviors: analysis of spousal discussions.

The shared social context created in a marriage may be important in motivating engagement in health behaviors, but spousal influence may not be uniformly applied. Our goal was to examine how spouses discuss health behaviors relevant for colorectal cancer (CRC) risk-reduction to better understand how spouses exert or fail to exert influence. In this pilot study, first degree relatives of CRC patients and their spouses completed demographic and self-reported health questionnaires. After a genetic counseling session regarding risk and risk reduction, couples engaged in a semi-structured discussio

Behavioral phenotype in children with 22q11DS: agreement between parents and teachers.

Patients with the 22q11-deletion syndrome (22q11DS) are at an increased risk of developing schizophrenia. Besides the effects of genetic variation, environmental factors could also be important in modifying the risk of schizophrenia in 22q11DS patients. In particular, previous studies have shown the importance of stress as a precipitating factor of psychosis. An incongruence between the perceived and actual severity of behavioral and cognitive domains could lead caregivers, and even the children themselves, to make demands that are insufficiently adapted to the child's abilities, causing stres

Effects of immobilization stress on emotional behaviors in dopamine D3 receptor knockout mice.

A central problem in understanding the dopamine system in anxiety and depression is to specify functions of different members of the dopamine receptor family. Recent studies have reported that the dopamine D2/D3 receptor agonist pramipexole exerts an antidepressant-like effect in the chronic mild stress model and in the behavioral despair model, suggesting dopamine D3 receptor may be an important target for antidepressant actions. The aim of the present study was to examine the role of dopamine D3 receptor on the anxiety-like and depression-like behaviors induced by immobilization stress. We s

Suicidal behavior in children and adolescents: does a history of trauma predict less severe suicidal attempts?

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify risk factors and possible predictors of severity of suicidal behavior of children and adolescents. METHODS: Seventy-seven patients (15 boys and 62 girls) aged 15.5+/-1.6 years on average, hospitalized due to a suicidal attempt in the department of pediatric psychiatry, were examined. Structured interviews with patients and their parents were used to clinically assess circumstances of suicidal behavior, relevant risk factors and severity of suicidal behavior. RESULTS: The results indicated that patients with any previous traumatic experience t

Hypersomnia.

Adequate alertness is necessary for proper daytime functioning. Impairment of alertness or increase in sleepiness results in suboptimal performance and adversely affects the quality of life. While some causes of somnolence are intrinsic to the brain circuitry and neurochemical architecture, others are due to maladaptive behaviors and disorders affecting the normal sleep homeostasis. Identification of the problem and understanding the underlying etiology is the key to timely treatment and better outcomes.

Gastrointestinal Conditions in the Obese Patient.

Obesity in adolescents presents many challenges for the patient, family, and physician. The myriad problems involving the GI tract will be managed more effectively when the treating physician has an understanding of the presentations, pathophysiology, appropriate laboratory evaluation, and approaches to treatment for these complications. In addition to being familiar with the pharmacotherapeutic options available, having an approach to behavioral change, such as MI, can be an extremely useful tool.

The good, the bad, and the ugly of sunscreens.

Sunscreens protect against sunburn, but there is no evidence that they protect against basal cell carcinoma or melanoma. Problems lie in the behavior of individuals who use sunscreens to stay out longer in the sun than they otherwise would. Vitamin D inhibition is, at this stage, unlikely due to insufficient use by individuals. Safety of sunscreens is a concern, and sunscreen companies have emotionally and inaccurately promoted the use of sunscreens.

Screening and evaluation of sleep disorders in children and adolescents.

Most pediatric professionals do not use a systematic screening, identification, or referral process to detect serious sleep problems and disorders in children and adolescents. Therefore, only 2% to 3% of children with sleep disorders are identified and treated. This article presents a screening, referral, and diagnostic process that helps detect and correct sleep disorders that impact children's learning, behavioral and emotional functioning, and health.

Mental health assessment of infants in foster care.

Infants placed in foster care are at high risk for emotional and behavioral problems. Assessment of their mental health must account for their often-adverse life experiences prior to placement and the involvement of multiple systems that shape their lives in lieu of parents' authority. This article presents practice guidelines for infant mental health evaluations with consideration of legal requirements and the unique issues conferred by foster care.
