The Silent Threat of BPA: Its Pervasive Presence and Impact on Reproductive Health.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a synthetic organic compound commonly utilized in the manufacturing of polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins. Its widespread presence in everyday items, including water bottles, food containers, and thermal paper, has raised considerable health concerns due to its potential as an endocrine disruptor. BPA has the ability to mimic estrogen and bind to estrogen receptors, which can lead to disruptions in hormonal signaling pathways. This interference poses risks to reproductive health, especially among younger individuals, as it may result in irregular menstrual cycles, ovu

Advances in biomaterials-based tissue engineering for regeneration of female reproductive tissues.

The anatomical components of the female reproductive system-comprising the ovaries, uterus, cervix, vagina, and fallopian tubes-interact intricately to provide the structural and hormonal support essential for reproduction. However, this system is susceptible to various detrimental factors, both congenital and acquired, that can impair fertility and adversely affect quality of life. Recent advances in bioengineering have led to the development of sophisticated three-dimensional models that mimic the complex architecture and functionality of reproductive organs. These models, incorporating dive…

Non-human primate: the new frontier model of female reproductive engineering.

Reproductive engineering encompasses a range of advanced tissue engineering techniques aimed at addressing infertility that is non-curable with current assisted reproductive technology (ART). The use of animal models has been crucial for these advancements, with a notable preference for non-human primates (NHPs) given their genetic, anatomical, and physiological similarities to humans. Therefore, NHPs are invaluable for studying reproductive engineering. Thus, in reproductive studies, NHPs bridge the anatomical and physiological gaps between rodent models and humans. Their shared features with

Toxicological effects of micro/nano-plastics on human reproductive health: A review.

Micro/Nano-plastics (MNPs), including microplastics (MPs; <5 mm) and nanoplastics (NPs; <100 nm), have become pervasive environmental pollutants due to extensive plastic production and insufficient recycling practices. These particles originate from the degradation of larger plastic materials through processes such as photo-oxidation, thermo-oxidation, and incomplete biodegradation, resulting in chemically reactive fragments that persist in air, water, and food. Once released, MNPs enter the human body primarily via ingestion, inhalation, and dermal absorption, ultimately accumulating in vario

Fertility preservation and mental health among cancer patients of reproductive age.

Many cancer patients and survivors of reproductive age report parenthood as one of their most important life goals. As a result, infertility, interruption to childbearing, or inability to conceive can have profound negative mental health impacts for this population, who often report fertility-related distress, depression, anxiety, and reproductive concerns. Most patients who preserve fertility report feeling confident in their decision, even if preservation outcomes are not favorable, whereas patients who do not preserve fertility report higher rates of decisional regret. Integrating mental he

Survey of U.S. reproductive medicine clinicians' attitudes on polygenic embryo screening.

Polygenic embryo screening (PES) is used to screen embryos for their genetic likelihood of developing complex conditions and traits. We surveyed 152 U.S. reproductive endocrinology and infertility specialists (REIs) on their views of PES. While most respondents (97%) were at least slightly familiar with PES, general approval of PES was low (12%), with the majority expressing disapproval (46%) or uncertainty (42%). A majority (58%) believed risks outweigh benefits, while only 16% felt benefits outweigh risks. Most clinicians (85-77%) were very or extremely concerned about low accuracy, confusio

Sperm selection for assisted reproductive technology: do we have a winner?

Assisted reproductive technology (ART) has emerged as a pivotal solution for human infertility, with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) being widely adopted. The quality of sperm is critical to the outcomes of ART, and the selection of optimal sperm is essential for enhancing embryo quality. In recent years, researchers have developed various advanced sperm selection methods that simulate the natural sperm selection process occurring in the female reproductive tract. Although many studies have been conducted to identify the selection technique, many doubts and disagreements still remain.

Reproductive dysfunction in hemodialysis: endocrine mechanisms, clinical features, and therapeutic approaches.

Reproductive dysfunction is a near-universal and debilitating complication in patients on maintenance hemodialysis, profoundly impacting quality of life. The core patho-physiology is a 'dual-hit' endocrine collapse, where the uremic milieu causes both central suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis and peripheral gonadal resistance. In men, this manifests as hypogonadism, with erectile dysfunction serving as a critical sentinel marker for systemic vascular disease. In women, it results in a reversible menopause-like state characterized by anovulation and infertility. While

Exploring the impact of environmental factors on male reproductive health through epigenetics.

Male infertility has become an increasingly severe global health issue, with its incidence significantly rising over the past few decades. This paper delves into the crucial role of epigenetics in male reproductive health, focusing particularly on the effects of DNA methylation, histone modifications, chromatin remodeling and non-coding RNAs regulation on spermatogenesis. Exposure to various environmental factors can cause sperm DNA damage, leading to epigenetic abnormalities. Among these factors, we have discussed heavy metals (including Zinc, Cadmium, Arsenic, Copper), phthalates, electromag

Reproductive toxicity of micro- and nanoplastics: Insights from experimental and human studies.

The exponential rise in plastic production has driven widespread contamination by micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) in the environment. These plastic particles and their chemical additives have been detected in water sources, human bodily fluids, and reproductive tissues. With global fertility rates declining, their role as potential contributors is under investigation. This scoping review compares findings from in vitro experiments, in vivo studies across animal models, and epidemiological data to assess potential reproductive hazards associated with MNP exposure. Forty original studies publishe

Oral niacin mitigates heat-induced reproductive impairments in male mice.

Heat stress is a major environmental factor that impairs male fertility by disrupting hormonal regulation, increasing oxidative stress, and inducing germ cell apoptosis. Niacin (vitamin B3) has antioxidant and thermoregulatory properties that may counteract these effects. This study investigated whether oral niacin could protect against chronic heat stress-induced reproductive damage in adult BALB/c male mice. Mice were randomly assigned to Control, Heat Control, and two heat-stressed groups receiving niacin at 100 or 200 mg/kg/day for 30 days, with heat stress applied daily at 36 ± 2 °C for 4

Telomere Length, Psychological Stress, and Infertility in Women of Advanced Reproductive Age.

Preliminary studies suggest a link between shortened telomeres, infertility, and poorer in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes. Infertility patients often experience high levels of psychological stress during treatment. Whether there is a link between stress and telomere length in infertility patients has not previously been studied; thus our goal was to examine differences in telomere length in infertile vs noninfertile women and to determine if telomere length correlates with psychological stress and IVF laboratory outcomes. We conducted a case-control study comparing nulliparous women aged 3
