Effect of continuous positive airway pressure on cardiometabolic risk factors in patients with obstructive sleep apnea: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Cardiometabolic risk factors (CMRFs) play a crucial role in the occurrence and development of cardiovascular diseases. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) causes abnormalities of CMRFs. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is a widely used treatment for OSA. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to investigate the effect of CPAP on CMRFs in patients with OSA. METHODS: A search of PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, and Embase was conducted to find randomized controlled trials up to December 3, 2023. The quality of the studies included was evaluated using the

Excessive daytime sleepiness in obstructive sleep apnea: Indirect treatment comparison of wake-promoting agents in patients adherent/nonadherent to primary OSA therapy.

There remains an unmet need for a targeted treatment to address residual excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) after primary treatment. This network meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy and safety of wake-promoting agents (WPAs), namely solriamfetol, pitolisant, modafinil, and armodafinil, for treating residual EDS in patients with OSA. We conducted a comprehensive search which ultimately included 18 studies in the final analysis. All 4 WPAs demonstrated significant therapeutic benefits for the Epworth sleepiness scale (ESS) and maintenance of wakefu

A mandibular advancement device attenuates the abnormal morphology and function of mitochondria from the genioglossus in obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome rabbits.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is a serious and potentially life-threatening disease. Mandibular advancement device (MAD) has the characteristics of non-invasive, comfortable, portable and low-cost, making it the preferred treatment for mild-to-moderate OSAHS. Our previous studies found that abnormal contractility and fibre type distribution of the genioglossus could be caused by OSAHS. However, whether the mitochondria participate in these tissue changes is unclear. The effect of MAD treatment on the mitochondria of the genioglossus in OSAHS is also uncertain.

Improved depressive symptoms, and emotional regulation and reactivity, in individuals with obstructive sleep apnea after short- and long-term CPAP therapy use.

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is associated with high rates of depression; however, if and how treatment of OSA improves depressive symptoms is unclear. To further understand this link we considered the role of emotional regulation - the ability to control and express our emotional responses - thought to be a central component of depression. This study aimed to assess changes in depressive symptoms and emotional responses in individuals with OSA after 4- and 12-months of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment. One-hundred and twenty-one OSA participants (50 female, Mage = 51.93;

Upper Airway Assessment in Cone-Beam Computed Tomography for Screening of Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome: Development of an Evaluation Protocol in Dentistry.

BACKGROUND: The upper airways are formed by the nasal cavities, pharynx, and larynx. There are several radiographic methods that allow evaluation of the craniofacial structure. Upper airway analysis in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) may be useful in diagnosing some pathologies such as obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). OSAS prevalence has increased significantly in recent decades, justified by increased obesity and average life expectancy. It can be associated with cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurovascular diseases, diabetes, and hypertension. In some individuals with OSAS, th
