Critical antibody titers have been described as factors associated with hemolysis in ABO plasma-incompatible platelet (PLT) transfusions. This study was carried out to describe the frequency of high-titers anti-A and antiB IgM and IgG antibodies in group O apheresis platelet donors, and to explore differences according to the donor characteristics. A cross-sectional study was carried out at the Blood Bank of a National Hospital in Peru from January to March 2019. IgM and IgG antibodies against A1 and B antigens were quantified in 339 platelet donors using the direct hemagglutination technique

BACKGROUND: ABO subgroups would be considered when discrepancies in ABO grouping occur. Serological methods including adsorption-elution test, salivary ABH inhibition test, and anti-A1 (lectin) saline method could be used. However, these serological methods are laboring and obscure. Therefore, reliable and affordable method to assess the ABO subgroups is of particular interest.
METHODS: To solve this problem, the multiplex SNaPshot-based assays were designed to determine rare A and B subgroups. Primers used as probes for determination of rare ABO blood groups known in Taiwanese population wer

BACKGROUND: Hemolysis may follow intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), with product, dosing, and host factors contributing. The importance of recipient features remains unclear.
CASE REPORT: A 52-year-old obese woman, 10 years after ABO-mismatched (recipient O, donor A) marrow transplantation, presented with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP). IVIG at 100 g/day × 2 days was followed by hemoglobinuria and angina and dyspnea, with frank hemoglobinemia and anemia (hemoglobin 12.9 to 8.4 over 24 hr, to a nadir of 6.9 g/dL).
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Serologic methods established ABO, A1, Lewis, and Secr

Owing to the shortage of deceased donors in Japan, since 1989, we have performed ABO-incompatible kidney transplantation (ABO-IKTx) to expand the indication for living donor kidney transplantation. During the past two decades, about 2000 ABO-IKTxs were performed. Since 2001 the success rate for these kidney transplants has reached 96% for 1-year, 91% for 5-year and 83% for 9-year graft survival, similar to outcomes of ABO-compatible kidney transplantation (ABO-CKTx). This dramatic improvement in results means that ABO-IKTx has become accepted as a therapeutic alternative for end-stage renal fa

BACKGROUND: Due to the shortage of deceased donors ABO-incompatible (ABOi) living kidney transplantation has become a popular alternative to deceased kidney transplantation. In recent years, recipient desensitization with a combination of anti-CD20 treatment (rituximab), antigen-specific immunoadsorptions (IA) and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), led to promising short-term and intermediate-term results. However, little is known about the impact of this intensified desensitization protocol on the risk of surgical and infectious complications.
METHODS: We retrospectively analysed 21 consecut

BACKGROUND: Strategies to decrease the wait time for kidney transplantation include the use of living donor kidneys. However, it is not always possible to donate directly, due to ABO blood type incompatibility or a positive crossmatch. Therefore, other options were explored, including a program for living donor kidney exchange.
METHODS: All Dutch kidney transplantation centers agreed on a common donor kidney exchange protocol. The Dutch Transplantation Foundation is responsible for the allocation, crossmatches are centrally performed, and exchanges take place on an anonymous basis. Donors tra

Fulminant hepatic failure continues to be a challenge to hepatologists and surgeons. Because of the rapid deterioration in the clinical condition of patients with fulminant hepatic failure and the scarcity of available grafts, an ABO-incompatible liver donor may be the only choice for a patient with life-threatening hepatic insufficiency. Here, we report a patient with fulminant hepatic failure who received an ABO-incompatible liver transplantation who was treated with pre- and posttransplantation double-volume total plasma exchange, splenectomy, and triple immunosuppression (tacrolimus, mycop

BACKGROUND: ABO incompatibility is the most common cause of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN). We investigated HDFN at our institute and discuss clinical characteristics and considerations during transfusions and laboratory testing.
METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of newborns with HDFN due to ABO incompatibility over a period of 5 years. Laboratory results such as the ABO blood type of mothers and newborns, direct antiglobulin test, hemoglobin, and total bilirubin were collected. History of transfusion and phototherapy were also taken.
RESULTS: During the 5 years, 27

BACKGROUND: Passenger lymphocyte syndrome occurs when donor lymphocytes are transplanted with a solid organ and produce alloantibodies that react with antigens on the recipient's red blood cells (RBCs). Typically, passenger lymphocyte syndrome presents as immunoglobulin G antibody-mediated, extravascular hemolytic anemia with reticulocytosis. Often, the donor was alloimmunized before transplantation.
CASE REPORT: A 34-year-old Group O, D+ man with a negative antibody screen received a liver transplant from a Group O, D- donor. Twenty Group O, D+ RBC units were transfused on Postoperative Days

BACKGROUND: Many hospital transfusion services prioritize ABO plasma compatibility in platelet (PLT) transfusion to minimize risk for acute hemolytic transfusion reactions. In spite of the low risk of D alloimmunization associated with apheresis PLT transfusion, attempts may also be made to provide D- PLTs to D- patients. This study was undertaken to assess how often ABO compatibility and/or D matching occurs at our institution and how the ABO and D mix of our PLT supply impacts PLT selection.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the ABO and D type of all PLTs transfused plus

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: ABO-incompatible red blood cell (RBC) transfusions are a major risk in transfusion medicine. Identification of factors leading to this hazard is important to improve transfusion safety.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: All consecutive erroneous ABO-incompatible transfusions occurring from January 1997 to December 2004 at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin, Germany were analysed.
RESULTS: A total of 343,432 RBC units were transfused, and eight patients erroneously received 13 ABO-incompatible RBC concentrates. The most frequent error was incorrect bedside testing (n=7).

BACKGROUND: ABO subgroups or weaker variants of A or B are group A or B subjects whose erythrocytes give a weak or negative reaction serologically with anti-A or Anti - B antisera respectively. Occurrence of these subgroups may lead to an ABO discrepancy which often puts transfusion services in a quandary. ABO subgroups which present as ABO discrepancies can be missed if reverse grouping is not performed.
AIM: This study was planned to estimate the prevalence of different subgroups which can present as an ABO discrepancy in Indian population, and provide an insight to transfusion services for

Seventy-one ABO incompatible (heterospecific) infants and 71 controls, who were free from other potential causes of jaundice, were studied to ascertain which cord blood tests reliably predict the severity of ABO haemolytic disease of the newborn (ABO HDN). The modified Direct Antiglobulin Test (spin DAGT) was positive in all infants who required treatment for haemolytic jaundice and only DAGT positive children showed evidence of impending haemolytic anaemia or compensated haemolysis in cord or capillary blood. Cord serum bilirubin concentration had some predictive value, particularly when the

Norovirus (NoV) are the most common cause of acute gastroenteritidis in humans worldwide. They are transmitted through consumption of contaminated food, or mostly by direct person-to-person contact. However, susceptibility to NoV infection is variable. NoVs recognize carbohydrate ligand, including A, B, H and Lewis histoblood group antigen (HBGAs) for attachment to human epithelial cells. Synthesis of these HBGAs requires various glycosyltransferase encoded by the ABO, FUT2, FUT3 genes. The presence of distinct carbohydrates structures dependent upon the combined polymorphism at the FUT2, FUT3

American journal of transplantation : official journal of the American Society of Transplantation and the American Society of Transplant Surgeons2006eng
In a list exchange (LE), the intended recipient in an incompatible pair receives priority on the deceased donor waitlist (DD-waitlist) after the paired incompatible donor donates a kidney to a DD-waitlist candidate. A nondirected donor's (ND-D) kidney is usually transplanted directly to a DD-waitlist candidate. These two established practices would help even more transplant candidates if they were integrated with kidney paired donation (KPD). We consider a scenario in which the donor of an LE intended recipient (LE-IR) donates to a compatible KPD intended recipient (KPD-IR), and the KPD donor
