BACKGROUND: Longitudinal changes in bone health in children with intestinal failure (IF) are unclear. We aimed to better understand the trajectory of bone mineral status over time in children with IF and identify clinical factors that influence the trajectory.
METHODS: Clinical records of patients attending the Intestinal Rehabilitation Center of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center between 2012 and 2021 were reviewed. Children diagnosed with IF before age 3 years with at least two lumbar spine dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry scans were included. We abstracted information on medical

Osteoporosis can currently be diagnosed by applying the WHO classification to bone mineral density (BMD) assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA). However, skeletal factors other than BMD contribute to bone strength and fracture risk. Lumbar spine TBS, a grey-level texture measure which is derived from DXA images has been extensively studied, enhances fracture prediction independent of BMD and can be used to adjust fracture probability from FRAX® to improve risk stratification. The purpose of this International Society for Clinical Densitometry task force was to review the existing e

PURPOSE: Primary Hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is associated with catabolic effects at both trabecular and cortical bone. Mechanical loading is one of the most important natural anabolic stimuli for bone at all ages. The present study was designed to assess the impact of PHPT on vBMD and bone geometry using peripheral quantitative computed tomography (pQCT) at the radius and tibia, sites with similar structural characteristics, but subject to different loading conditions.
METHODS: We evaluated the impact of PHPT on bone, by comparing the z-scores of volumetric Bone Mineral Density (vBMD) and ind

Our objective was to characterize bone outcomes in adolescent and young adult women with atypical anorexia nervosa (AAN) compared to typical AN and normal-weight healthy controls (HC) based on DSM-5 criteria. Four hundred thirty-two participants (141 AN, 131 AAN and 160 HC), ages 12-21 years, underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry for areal BMD, and a subset had high-resolution peripheral quantitative CT assessment of the distal radius and tibia for volumetric BMD (vBMD), bone geometry and microarchitecture, and microfinite element analysis for estimated strength. The groups did not differ

Osteoporosis is a public health problem, which negatively impacts society and national health services worldwide. Altered mineralization of the skeleton can be caused by persistent vitamin D deficiency. However, the combined impact of both on bone health is still under investigation. In fact, although there is compelling evidence in the literature about the positive effect of weight-bearing sports participation on bone mineral density, its impact on bone geometry gains more attention in pediatric population. The sports modalities that we evaluated were artistic gymnastics and track and field.

BACKGROUND: Disordered mineral metabolism reverses incompletely after kidney transplantation in numerous patients. Post-transplantation bone disease is a combination of pre-existing chronic kidney disease and mineral disorder and often evolving osteoporosis. These two frequently overlapping conditions increase the risk of post-transplantation fractures.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We studied the prevalence of low bone volume in bone biopsies obtained from kidney transplant recipients who were biopsied primarily due to the clinical suspicion of persistent hyperparathyroidism between 2000 and 2015 at

Bone metabolism has been rarely investigated in children affected by Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). Aim of the present study was to assess bone mineral metabolism in children and adults NF1 patients, to determine the relevant factors potentially involved in the development of reduced bone mineral density (BMD), and provide possible therapeutic intervention in NF1 patients. 114 NF1 patients and sex and age matched controls were enrolled into the study. Clinical and biochemical factors reflecting bone metabolism were evaluated. Factors potentially affecting BMD were also investigated including:

Klinefelter Syndrome (KS) patients, defined by a 47 XXY karyotype, have increased risk of fragility fractures. We have assessed bone microarchitecture by high resolution peripheral quantitative CT (HR-pQCT) at the radius and tibia in young KS patients, naïve from testosterone replacement therapy (TRT). Areal bone mineral density (BMD) and body composition were assessed by dual X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). Total testosterone (tT) was measured at baseline. Bone measurements have been repeated after 30 months of TRT. We enrolled 24 KS patients and 72 age-matched controls. KS patients were (mean ±

Tracking metabolic changes in skeletal muscle and bone using animal models of diabetes mellitus (DM) provides important insights for the management of DM complications. In this study, we aimed to establish a method for monitoring changes in body composition characteristics, such as fat mass, skeletal muscle mass (lean mass), bone mineral density, and bone mineral content, during DM progression using a dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) system in a mouse model of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced type 1 DM. In the DM model, STZ administration resulted in increased blood glucose levels, increased

Osteoporosis is a highly prevalent systemic skeletal disease that is characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural bone deterioration. It predisposes to fragility fractures that can occur at various sites of the skeleton, but vertebral fractures (VFs) have been shown to be particularly common. Prevention strategies and timely intervention depend on reliable diagnosis and prediction of the individual fracture risk, and dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) has been the reference standard for decades. Yet, DXA has its inherent limitations, and other techniques have shown potential as vi

PURPOSE: The diagnostic criteria for osteoporosis are based on the bone mineral density (BMD) level in the lumbar spine and femur bone. Patients with osteoporotic fractures were diagnosed with osteoporosis. While systemic BMD and mandibular cortical bone morphology are correlated, this has not been studied in patients with a history of osteoporotic fractures. Therefore, purpose of this study was researching the mandibular cortical bone morphology in patients with osteoporotic fractures.
METHODS: The subjects were 55 female and 20 male patients with osteoporotic fractures. Patients were divide

Prevalence of osteoporosis is more than 50% in older adults, yet current clinical methods for diagnosis that rely on areal bone mineral density (aBMD) fail to detect most individuals who have a fragility fracture. Bone fragility can manifest in different forms, and a "one-size-fits-all" approach to diagnosis and management of osteoporosis may not be suitable. High-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) provides additive information by capturing information about volumetric density and microarchitecture, but interpretation is challenging because of the complex interact

Medical overuse leads to a burden on healthcare costs and potentially is harmful to patients. We wanted to address medical overuse in musculoskeletal disease and rheumatology. We performed a systemic literature review from PubMed and Embase to study medical overuse. On the initial screen, 1499 studies were identified, 839 of them were related to medical overuse. Out of these, 52 were related to overuse in musculoskeletal diseases. Finally, 20 articles were chosen for this systemic review that reported overuse in rheumatology. The article identifies issues with overtesting, including the use of

BACKGROUND: The Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019 recommended the use of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) or bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) to assess appendicular lean mass (ALM). AWGS, European Working Group on Sarcopenia in Older People 2 (EWGSOP2), Foundation for the National Institutes of Health Sarcopenia Project (FNIH), and International Working Group on Sarcopenia (IWGS) reported different cutoff values for sarcopenia. We aimed to validate these cutoff values in a Japanese population using DXA and two different devices of segmental multi-frequency BIA (MF-BIA)

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia is defined as the loss of muscle mass and strength. Despite the seriousness of this disease, a single diagnostic criterion has not yet been established. Few studies have reported the prevalence of sarcopenia globally, and there is a high level of heterogeneity between studies, stemmed from the diagnostic criteria of sarcopenia and the target population. The aims of this systematic review and meta-analysis were (i) to identify and summarize the diagnostic criteria used to define sarcopenia and severe sarcopenia and (ii) to estimate the global and region-specific prevalenc
