Frequency and adequacy of breast cancer screening among elderly Hispanic women.

Studies have demonstrated that Hispanic (relative to Anglo) women are at greater risk for late-stage breast cancer diagnosis. Screening irre … xamination. Perceived susceptibility to cancer, perceived benefits of early detection, and level of acculturation were not strong predictors. The extent to which our results generalize to other subpopulations of Hispanic women is discussed.

Preserving Tradition, Preventing Cancer: A Narrative Review of the Traditional Mexican Diet as a Framework for Cancer Risk Reduction.

The Traditional Mexican Diet (TMexD) is a culturally rooted, plant-forward dietary pattern derived from Mesoamerican agriculture and culinar … cals with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity. We also examine how globalization, migration, acculturation, and urban food environments influence access to heritage staples and day-to-day practice of the pattern, noting that some regional staples remain robust while others are declining. Explaining Health Outcomes of Asian Immigrants: Does Ethnicity Matter?

The present study intended to evaluate whether 4 discrete ethnic groups of Asian immigrants could, for empirical reasons, be assigned a set of unique operating factors explaining health outcomes of members. The set comprised several acculturation, social structure, lifestyle, and health-related factors. Our study asked if these factors uniformly explained health outcomes across the 4 groups. We pooled National Health Interview Survey (NHIS) data dating 1999-2015 and developed 2 outcomes: self-rated health and self-reported chronic illness (specifically, diagnosis of cardiovascular disease, pre…

Contextual consideration of the emergence of alexithymia: A case study highlighting cross-cultural client factors and limited English proficiency.

Alexithymia, characterized by deficits in recognition or expression of emotional experiences, has been demonstrated to be associated with depressive symptoms. In psychotherapy, alexithymia can partly manifest as stunted, disfluent speech when an individual attempts to describe his or her subjective experiences. However, similarly stunted, disfluent speech can be observed in individuals with limited English proficiency who are not diagnosed with a depressive disorder. For individuals who present with both symptoms of depression and limited English proficiency, it can be difficult to determine i

Enhancing resiliency and promoting prosocial behavior among Tanzanian primary-school students: A school-based intervention.

Children in Sub-Saharan Africa are living under chronic adversity due to poverty, serious health issues, physical and sexual abuse, and armed conflicts. These highly stressful conditions have deleterious effects on their mental health and socio-emotional adjustment. Since many children lack adequate access to mental health care, culturally adapted school-based resiliency programs could provide a resource to scaffold their development and promote their mental health. This study evaluated the efficacy of a universal school-based intervention in enhancing the resiliency of Tanzanian primary schoo

Changes in characteristics of inmates with latent tuberculosis infection.

OBJECTIVES: Health and social characteristics place prisoners at high risk for progression from latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) to tuberculosis (TB), but completion of LTBI therapy is low with many patients lost to follow-up after release. Despite decreases in active TB, demographic characteristics of active cases have remained relatively unchanged. This study investigated whether characteristics have changed in inmates diagnosed with LTBI in San Francisco, CA, USA. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional. METHODS: Data from baseline interviews of randomized trials conducted in 1998-1999 and 2004

Group status drives majority and minority integration preferences.

This research examined preferences for national- and campus-level assimilative and pluralistic policies among Black and White students under different contexts, as majority- and minority-group members. We targeted attitudes at two universities, one where 85% of the student body is White, and another where 76% of students are Black. The results revealed that when a group constituted the majority, its members generally preferred assimilationist policies, and when a group constituted the minority, its members generally preferred pluralistic policies. The results support a functional perspective:

Television viewing and forms of bullying among adolescents from eight countries.

PURPOSE: Based on theories suggesting that frequent television viewers act and react in hostile, malicious, malevolent, or verbally aggressive ways rather than being physically violent, the present study investigates relationships between television viewing and different forms of bullying. METHODS: Multilevel regression models were estimated based on cross-sectional data from 31,177 adolescents aged 11, 13, and 15 years from Canada, Estonia, Israel, Latvia, Macedonia, Poland, Portugal, and the United States who participated in the 2001-2002 Health Behavior in School-aged Children Survey. Premarital sexual, child rearing, and family attitudes of Iranian men and women in the United States and in Iran.

Sexual, child rearing, and family attitudes of 160 Iranian immigrants in the United States (61 men, 99 women) and 97 Iranians (55 men, 42 women) in Iran were compared. Iranians in the United States in general, and women in particular, compared with their counterparts in Iran, expressed more permissive attitudes toward premarital sex and sex education, more tolerance toward homosexuality, and a greater acceptance of marital dissolution. Iranians in both countries assigned a high value to the maternal role and to family loyalty but did not endorse unrestricted freedom for youngsters. Influences

Patterns of Caregiver Communicative Behaviors Among Low-Income Chinese Immigrant Mothers of Children with Autism-An Exploratory Study.

Caregiver communicative behaviors are critical in supporting social and language development in children with autism, yet little is known about how these behaviors manifest among Chinese immigrant families who face unique cultural and socioeconomic challenges. This study examined the communicative strategies of 11 Chinese immigrant caregivers of preschool-aged children with autism in the US during structured caregiver-child interactions. Caregiver behaviors were coded across directive and non-directive categories, including supportive directives, directives, labeling, praise, imitation, and ex

Health Disparity and Breast Cancer Outcomes in Asian Women.

Health disparities in Asian women are complex and multifactorial. Screening attendance is low among Asian women, regardless of nativity or acculturation, and breast cancer detection has decreased by more than half in this population during the COVID-19 pandemic. The follow-up rate after abnormal screening results is similarly poor among Asian women compared with that among other groups, often resulting in a delay of cancer diagnosis. Yet the incidence of breast cancer in Asian women is increasing in the United States, with no such increase observed in other racial and ethnic groups in recent y…

Lytico-bodig in Guam: Historical links between diet and illness during and after Spanish colonization.

This paper analyses documents on health and disease among Chamorro people during and after 333 years (1565-1898) of the Spanish claim to and occupation of Guam. Here, a complex neurodegenerative disease-known locally as lytico-bodig and medically as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and Parkinsonism-dementia complex (ALS/PDC)-reached hyperendemic proportions in the mid-twentieth century but then declined and is now disappearing. A tau-dominated polyproteinopathy, clinical phenotypes included amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS or lytico), atypical parkinsonism with dementia (P-D or bodig), and deme
