The whole is greater than the sum of its parts: Using cognitive profiles to predict academic achievement.

BACKGROUND: Executive functions (EFs) are thought to work in concert to support academic skill. However, EFs are often examined independently, obscuring their symbiotic contribution. We examined the relationship between students' holistic EF profiles and their academic success. METHODS: We sampled over 1200 7-15 year old students from a diverse school district (16 % White; 32 % low income) in the United States. We used 9 EF assessments to construct cognitive profiles via self-organizing maps. We then related profiles to academic achievement scores from both laboratory-based assessments and st…

Particulates Matter: The Influence of Cumulative Local Air Pollution Exposure on Sixth-Grade Academic Achievement in California.

We examine the influence of exposure to fine particulate matter (PM 2.5) in ambient air over the previous 6 years on the average standardized test score performance in math, English language arts (ELA), and overall for sixth graders at a sample of California public school districts from 2015 through 2018. Public health research suggests that children exposed to localized air pollution may suffer from cognitive impairment during testing or chronic conditions such as asthma that could influence their academic performance. After controlling for the appropriate confounding variables, our findings

Toward improving student motivation and performance in introductory programming learning by Scratch: The role of achievement emotions.

This study investigated the differences in programming novices' intrinsic motivation and performance within a Scratch-based programming learning environment using a pretest-posttest intervention design. Specifically, this study aimed to examine what and how achievement emotions were aroused to impact learners' academic success during Scratch implementation processes by employing regression analyses. One hundred and seventy-two undergraduates (Mage = 20.44, SDage = 1.09, 55.8% female) were voluntarily recruited to participate in a Scratch-based instruction workshop during a 6-week period. The w…

Longitudinal association between executive function and academic achievement in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 and plexiform neurofibromas.

OBJECTIVE: To examine how executive functioning (EF) relates to academic achievement longitudinally in children with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) and plexiform neurofibromas (PNs) and whether age at baseline moderates this relationship. METHOD: Participants included 88 children with NF1 and PNs (ages 6-18 years old, M = 12.05, SD = 3.62, 50 males) enrolled in a natural history study. Neuropsychological assessments were administered three times over 6 years. EF (working memory, inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, and attention) was assessed by performance-based (PB) and parent-reporte…

Achievement and Maintenance of Optimal Alignment After Adult Spinal Deformity Corrective Surgery: A 5-Year Outcome Analysis.

OBJECTIVE: We sought to assess factors contributing to optimal radiographic outcomes. METHODS: Operative adult spinal deformity (ASD) patients with baseline and 5-year (5Y) data were included. Optimal alignment (O) was defined as improving in at least 1 Scoliosis Research Society-Schwab modifier without worsening in any Scoliosis Research Society-Schwab modifier. A robust outcome was defined as having optimal alignment 2 years (2Y) post operation that was maintained at 5Y. Predictors of robust outcomes were identified using multivariate regression analysis, with a conditional inference tree f

Achievement of ESC/EAS LDL-C treatment goals after an acute coronary syndrome with statin and alirocumab.

AIMS: European guidelines set low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) treatment goals <1.4 mmol/L after acute coronary syndrome (ACS), and <1.0 mmol/L for patients with recurrent cardiovascular events ≤2 years. Many ACS patients do not achieve these goals on statin alone. We examined actual goal achievement with alirocumab and projected achievement with ezetimibe, either added to optimized statin therapy. METHODS AND RESULTS: The ODYSSEY OUTCOMES trial (NCT01663402) compared alirocumab with placebo in 18 924 patients with recent ACS and hyperlipidaemia despite high-intensity or maxi…

Achievement of live birth after overcoming two gynecological malignancies treated with radical trachelectomy and medroxyprogesterone acetate therapy.

Cervical cancer is a human papilloma virus-related disease, whereas endometrial cancer and atypical endometrial hyperplasia (AEH) are hormone-related diseases, so co-occurrence of the two is possible. However, scientific studies about such cases are rare. We encountered a case of cervical adenocarcinoma and AEH in a 33-year-old nulliparous woman. Two fertility-sparing treatments were performed, a radical trachelectomy for the cervical cancer and high-dose medroxyprogesterone acetate treatment for the AEH. After remission of the diseases, the patient became pregnant by in vitro fertilization an

Counting Differently: Assessing Mathematics Achievement of Signing Deaf and Hard of Hearing Children Through a Unique Lens.

Limited studies exist that connect using signed language with mathematics performance of deaf and hard of hearing children. In the present study, the authors examined 257 participants and compared their results on the Northwest Evaluation Association: Measures of Academic Progress (NWEA MAP) to their results on an assessment of American Sign Language (ASL) skills. It was found that better ASL skills tended to result in better MAP performance. These results are moderated by factors such as age, gender, parental hearing status, and learning disability identification.

Early Cognitive Precursors of Children's Mathematics Learning Disability and Persistent Low Achievement: A 5-Year Longitudinal Study.

Mathematical difficulties have been distinguished as mathematics learning disability (MLD) and persistent low achievement (LA). Based on 1,880 Finnish children who were followed from kindergarten (age 6) to fourth grade, this study examined the early risk factors for MLD and LA. Distinct groups of MLD (6.0% of the sample) and LA (25.7%) children were identified on the basis of their mathematics performance between first and fourth grades with latent class growth modeling. Impairment in the same set of cognitive skills, including language, spatial, and counting skills, was found to underlie MLD…

Active commuting to school was inversely associated with academic achievement in primary but not secondary school students.

AIM: Physical activity has numerous benefits for children when it comes to academic achievements. This study determined whether active commuting - walking or cycling - to school, as a way of increasing total physical activity levels, was associated with academic achievements in students aged seven to 18 years. METHODS: A total of 2138 students participated in the study, which took place in the 2012/2013 academic year in three Spanish cities. We used a self-reported questionnaire to assess how the students travelled to and from school and their final school grades. RESULTS: We enrolled 489 pr…

Enhancement of numeric cognition in children with low achievement in mathematic after a non-instrumental musical training.

Studies suggest that musical training enhances spatial-temporal reasoning and leads to greater learning of mathematical concepts. The aim of this prospective study was to verify the efficacy of a Non-Instrumental Musical Training (NIMT) on the Numerical Cognition systems in children with low achievement in math. For this purpose, we examined, with a cluster analysis, whether children with low scores on Numerical Cognition would be grouped in the same cluster at pre and post-NIMT. Participants were primary school children divided into two groups according to their scores on an Arithmetic test. …

Externalizing problems in childhood and adolescence predict subsequent educational achievement but for different genetic and environmental reasons.

BACKGROUND: Childhood behavior problems predict subsequent educational achievement; however, little research has examined the etiology of these links using a longitudinal twin design. Moreover, it is unknown whether genetic and environmental innovations provide incremental prediction for educational achievement from childhood to adolescence. METHODS: We examined genetic and environmental influences on parental ratings of behavior problems across childhood (age 4) and adolescence (ages 12 and 16) as predictors of educational achievement at age 16 using a longitudinal classical twin design. [Achievement of deep molecular response in an elderly chronic myeloid leukemia patient intolerant to imatinib and nilotinib].

A 90-year-old woman was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) of the high risk type (Sokal score 1.5), and was administered imatinib (400 mg/day). However, imatinib had to be switched to nilotinib because she suffered persistent vomiting and nausea. Although a cytogenetic response was achieved, the nilotinib administration also had to be stopped because the patient developed QTc prolongation and heart failure. After she had recovered from heart failure, the patient was given dasatinib (50 mg/day). No non-hematological adverse events occurred and she achieved a molecular response with a

Achievement of pregnancies in women with primary ovarian insufficiency using close monitoring of follicle development: case reports.

Women with primary ovarian insufficiency (POI)/premature ovarian failure exhibit hypergonadotropic hypogonadism due to follicle dysfunction and depletion before the age of 40 years. Because ovulation is extremely rare and thought to be unpredictable in women with POI and because no ovulation induction regimens have been shown to be efficacious, oocyte donation is the only evidence-based treatment for women with POI with desired fertility. Oocyte donation is, however, extremely limited in several countries including Japan. Here, we report four women with POI who achieved pregnancies resulting f

Associations between reading achievement and independent reading in early elementary school: a genetically informative cross-lagged study.

This study used a cross-lagged twin design to examine reading achievement and independent reading from 10 to 11 years (n = 436 twin pairs). Reading achievement at age 10 significantly predicted independent reading at age 11. The alternative path, from independent reading at age 10 to reading achievement at age 11, was not significant. Individual differences in reading achievement and independent reading at both ages were primarily due to genetic influences. Furthermore, individual differences in independent reading at age 11 partly reflected genetic influences on reading achievement at age 10.…
