Acoustic Bioprinting: Liquid-Bridge-Based Efficient Single-Cell Encapsulation Using Gigahertz Bulk Acoustic Waves.

Single cell encapsulation techniques are essential for biological analysis, regenerative therapy, and drug screening. However, current methods still suffer from issues such as insufficient spatial resolution, complex operation, and poor biocompatibility. Furthermore, the low encapsulation efficiency has resulted in significant waste of biological samples. In this study, we propose an acoustic-based bioprinting method to address these challenges in single cell encapsulation. Unlike most bioprinting approaches, the proposed method transfers cells via a liquid bridge, providing an error correctio

Beaked whale dive behavior and acoustic detection range off Louisiana using three-dimensional acoustic tracking.

Understanding abundance and trends of beaked whales in the heavily industrialized Gulf of America (formerly Gulf of Mexico), is critical for management but challenging with visual-based distance-sampling due to their elusive surface behavior. Acoustic-based distance-sampling methods rely on accurate modeling of detection probability as a function of distance from a recorder, requiring population-specific diving and acoustic behavior parameters, which is currently lacking for Gulf populations. To address this, we used passive acoustic tracking with two 4-channel High-Frequency Acoustic Recordin

S2-DyGNN: A Spectro-Spatial Dynamic Graph Neural Network for Acoustic Event Classification in Distributed Acoustic Sensing.

Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) systems capture complex, nonlinear wave propagation across fiber-optic cables. Conventional event classification architectures, constrained by static physical topologies or isolated spatial grids, fail to effectively adapt to the dynamic feature relationships associated with such events, particularly when modeling complex spatiotemporal interactions across sensor arrays. To resolve these structural limitations, we introduce the Spectro-Spatial Dynamic Graph Neural Network (S2-DyGNN), whose architecture couples a two-dimensional frequency-time convolutional fr

Clinical Utility and Validation of the Acoustic Voice Quality and Acoustic Breathiness Indexes for Voice Disorder Assessment in English Speakers.

BACKGROUND: While several acoustic voice metrics are available for clinical voice assessment, there remains a significant need for reliable and ecologically valid tools. The Acoustic Voice Quality Index version 03.01 (AVQI-3) and Acoustic Breathiness Index (ABI) hold potential due to their comprehensive assessment approach, incorporating diverse voice aspects. However, these tools still need to be validated in English-speaking populations. METHODS: This study assessed the discriminatory accuracy and validity of AVQI-3 and ABI in 197 participants, including 148 with voice disorders. Voice samp

New insights on repeated acoustic injury: Augmentation of cochlear susceptibility and inflammatory reaction resultant of prior acoustic injury.

In industrial and military settings, individuals who suffer from one episode of acoustic trauma are likely to sustain another episode of acoustic stress, creating an opportunity for a potential interaction between the two stress conditions. We previously demonstrated that acoustic overstimulation perturbs the cochlear immune environment. However, how the cochlear immune system responds to repeated acoustic overstimulation is unknown. Here, we used a mouse model to investigate the cochlear immune response to repeated stress. We reveal that exposure to an intense noise at 120 dB SPL for 1 h acti

Acoustic neuroma observation associated with an increase in symptomatic tinnitus: results of the 2007-2008 Acoustic Neuroma Association survey.

OBJECT: Tinnitus is a known presenting symptom of acoustic neuromas, but little is known about the impact of observation or treatment on tinnitus. Most patients experience improvement with treatment, while others may worsen. Therefore, this study was designed to assess the overall impact of observation and treatment on tinnitus outcome in patients with acoustic tumors. METHODS: Data from the 2007-2008 Acoustic Neuroma Association survey were used. Tinnitus severity was graded both at presentation and at last follow-up for all patients questioned. This data set was analyzed using the Student t

[Diagnostic intra-meatal acoustic neurinoma--the role of acoustically evoked brain stem potentials and other otoneurologic studies].

BACKGROUND: Today intracanalicular acoustic neuromas are diagnosed very early by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The purpose of this study was to test the capability of brainstem evoked response audiometry (BERA) for detecting these small tumors. PATIENTS: Seventeen of 91 consecutive cases with acoustic neuromas treated at our department suffered from purely intracanalicular tumors. For these 17 patients we reviewed their medical history, clinical otoneurologic examination, audiometry, auditory evoked brainstem audiometry, electronystagmography, and MRI studies. RESULTS: In 13 of 17 patien

[Bilateral tumors of the acoustic nerve and Recklinghausen's disease observed in several generations. Considerations on heriditary acoustic nerve tumors].

Since 1933, four families have been found in Marseilles with bilateral tumours of the acoustic nerve spread over three generations in three families. The fourth only showing a cutaneous neuro-fibromatosis in the second generation. The authors recall briefly the clinical characteristics and compare their cases with similar ones found in the literature. Bilateral and familial neurinomas of the VIIIth cranial verbes were found in 21 families, making a total of 111 cases, unilateral neurinoma being used as a term of comparison. Among the groups of cases published, the family observed by Gardner an

Circular orbital manipulation of positive-acoustic-contrast particles employing double-ring perfect acoustic-vortex beams.

Non-contact acoustic-vortex (AV) tweezers have gained prominence for high-precision manipulation. However, conventional AV beams are limited by their topological charge (TC)-dependent radii. While perfect AV beams address this radius issue, existing implementations struggle to achieve both flexible field control and stable trapping of particles with positive acoustic contrast. To overcome these limitations, this study introduces a robust method for constructing double-ring perfect acoustic vortex (DR-PAV) fields, enabling stable circular manipulation of positive-contrast particles along low-pr

Multivariate prediction of conductive dysfunction in well and NICU newborns using wideband acoustic immittance with acoustic reflex tests.

OBJECTIVES: The goal of newborn hearing screening is to detect permanent congenital hearing loss. However, the high incidence of middle ear fluid and debris in the ear canal at birth results in only a 5-10% positive predictive value, thus requires repeated screening, and can delay or complicate diagnosis of permanent hearing loss. The overall goal of this study was to assess tympanometric and ambient wideband acoustic immittance (WAI) tests and wideband acoustic reflex thresholds (ART) in well-baby and newborn intensive care (NICU) cohorts with four specific objectives: 1) Assess predictive ac

The acoustic hood: a patient-independent device improving acoustic noise protection during neonatal magnetic resonance imaging.

BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is today the imaging modality of choice to investigate the neonatal brain. However, the acoustic noise during scanning is very loud, often exceeding 100 dBA. AIM: To reduce the acoustic noise during MRI for neonatal patients. If effective, this would create a safer environment and also result in fewer aborted examinations due to poor image quality from patient motion. METHODS: A passive acoustic noise protector, the acoustic hood, was built out of dampening material. Sound pressure measurements with and without the acoustic hood were performed usi
