Long term durability of osseointegrated implants depends on bone adaptation to stress and strain occurring in proximity of the prosthesis. Mechanical overloading, as well as disuse, may reduce the stability of implants by provoking bone resorption. However, an appropriate mechanical environment can improve integration. Several studies have focused on the definition of numerical methods to predict bone peri-implant adaptation to the mechanical environment. Existing adaptation models differ notably in the type of mechanical variable adopted as stimulus but also in the bounds and shape of the ada

INTRODUCTION: Physical activity enhances overall health by promoting coordinated communication among organs. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) play a key role in this process by transporting proteins, RNAs, lipids and other molecules that reflect how different tissues respond to physiological stress. Proteomics has been instrumental in clarifying how exercise reshapes EVs, providing insights into their role in mediating intercellular communication and systemic adaptations.
AREAS COVERED: Current proteomics of exercise-induced EV remodeling are overviewed and integrated with complementary transcrip

Melanin is the primary pigment found in the skin, hair, wool and feathers of many vertebrates and plays a crucial role in determining the physical appearance and physiological performance of livestock species. Melanin functions in thermoregulation as well as coloration, photoprotection, and adaptation to diverse environmental conditions. This review examines the biosynthesis of melanin and the genetics of melanogenesis in major livestock species such as cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, and poultry, and the roles of melanin-based pigmentation within different systems of animal production. Understanding the variations in twig and leaf morphologies and photosynthetic physiological characteristics of riparian forest plants in heterogeneous habitats is of great significance for revealing their phenotypic plasticity mechanisms and ecological adaptation strategies. In this study, the riparian forest plant Periploca sepium Bunge was selected as the research object. According to the canopy light environment experienced by the P. sepium population, three habitats were established: under-canopy, gap, and full-sun areas. We studied the twig and leaf morphological and photosynthetic charac

Our study aimed to elucidate the physiological and anatomical mechanisms facilitating Gypsophila eriocalyx adaptation to extreme conditions. G. eriocalyx samples were collected from different regions of Turkey in May and August, representing areas with low, moderate, and high gypsum concentrations. The proline, calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), and sulfur (S) contents of the plants were determined. The proline value was highest at low gypsum content in August. K content increased in May and August correlating with higher gypsum levels. Conversely, Mg and S levels decreased in August

Metabolism has long been recognized as a critical physiological process necessary to maintain homeostasis in all types of cells including the chondrocytes of articular cartilage. Alterations in metabolism in disease and metabolic adaptation to physiological stimuli such as mechanical loading are increasingly recognized as important for understanding musculoskeletal systems such as synovial joints. Metabolomics is an emerging technique that allows quantitative measurement of thousands of small molecule metabolites that serve as both products and reactants to myriad reactions of cellular biochem

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of mortality globally. Although cardiac hypertrophy initially serves as a compensatory adaptation to stress, physiological and pathological hypertrophy are governed by distinct mechanisms and lead to divergent outcomes. However, how cardiomyocytes differentially respond to diverse stimuli remains incompletely understood. Here, we demonstrate that YTHDF1-mediated RNA m6A regulation modulates cardiomyocyte metabolic adaptation under different stress conditions and, in this context, directs hypertrophic response toward distinct remodeling outcomes.

Background adaptation is used by teleosts as one of a variety of camouflage mechanisms for avoidance of predation. Background adaptation is known to involve light sensing by the retina and subsequent regulation of melanophore dispersion or contraction in melanocytes, mediated by α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone and melanin-concentrating hormone, respectively. Here, we demonstrate that an agouti gene unique to teleosts, agrp2, is specifically expressed in the pineal and is required for up-regulation of hypothalamic pmch and pmchl mRNA and melanosome contraction in dermal melanocytes in response

Soil salinity poses a severe threat to global food security, making the halophytic crop Chenopodium quinoa a vital model for sustainable agriculture. While quinoa is known for its extreme salt tolerance, the molecular mechanisms integrating stress perception with metabolic adaptation remain poorly defined. This study employs a multi-level approach, integrating morphological, physiological, biochemical, transcriptomic, and metabolomic analyses, to dissect the complex adaptation strategies across eight advanced quinoa lines. Morphological and physiological screening identified three distinct sur

Understanding organismal responses to dynamic environments is becoming increasingly important in our rapidly changing world. Beyond genetic adaptation, plastic responses to the environment can alter phenotypes and fitness, ultimately driving evolution. However, the interaction between plasticity and adaptation during environmental change is complex and hard to measure in natural systems. Here, we used two populations of Tigriopus californicus copepods, a thermally tolerant southern population and a thermally sensitive northern population, to conduct a fully factorial, split-brood experiment wh

This study investigated the physiological regulatory mechanisms by which exogenous trehalose intake enhances the adaptation of the global stored-grain pest T. castaneum to high-concentration carbon dioxide (CO2) stress. By supplementing exogenous trehalose under high-CO2 controlled atmosphere stress, we measured the activities of key detoxification enzymes (e.g., carboxylesterase and cytochrome P450) and the levels of carbohydrate substances (e.g., glycogen, glucose, and trehalose). The results demonstrated that trehalose feeding significantly alleviated CO2 induced mortality in T. castaneum a

Athlete's heart is generally regarded as a physiological adaptation to regular training, with specific morphological and functional alterations in the cardiovascular system. Development of the noninvasive imaging techniques over the past several years enabled better assessment of cardiac remodeling in athletes, which may eventually mimic certain pathological conditions with the potential for sudden cardiac death, or disease progression. The current literature provides a compelling overview of the available methods that target the interrelation of prolonged exercise with cardiac structure and f

Plastic adaptation to match the skin colour to the surrounding is key to survival. Two biological responses in skin colour are associated with background adaptation. A fast "physiological response" that aggregates/disperses the pigment organelles of skin chromatophores, and a slow "morphological response" that alters the type and/or density of pigment cells in the skin. Both responses are linked by unknown mechanisms. In this review, we discuss the role in skin colour regulation of two molecules that form part of a hypothalamic-hypophyseal pathway unique to teleosts, melanin-concentrating horm

Enteral autonomy and freedom from parenteral nutrition dependency is the ultimate therapeutic goal in children with intestinal failure. This can be achieved following attainment of bowel adaptation in conditions such as short bowel syndrome. Enteral nutrition is a major therapeutic cornerstone in the management of children with intestinal failure. It promotes physiological development, bowel adaptation and enhances weaning from parenteral nutrition. The optimal method of delivery, type of nutrients, timing of initiation, promotion of feeds and transition to solid food in children with short bo

We describe here the identification and characterization of two Listeria monocytogenes (Tn917-LTV3) relA and hpt transposon insertion mutants that were impaired in growth after attachment to a model surface. Both mutants were unable to accumulate (p)ppGpp in response to amino acid starvation, whereas the wild-type strain accumulated (p)ppGpp within 30 min of stress induction. The induction of transcription of the relA gene after adhesion was demonstrated, suggesting that the ability to mount a stringent response and undergo physiological adaptation to nutrient deprivation is essential for the

Several different theories exist about the origin of kinetosis and the space adaptation syndrome, with individual sensitivities differing significantly. One explanation involves the hypothesis of a different otolith mass between the right and left statolith organ and especially a difference in the utricles. A difference in mass results in a different sensitivity to acceleration. For this reason we measured interindividual variances in saccular and utricular otolith mass. Since the anatomy of the vestibular organ in vertebrates is based as similar principles, we selected fish (salmon and trout)

Classic examples of convergent trophic evolution in fishes have focused predominantly on adaptations in craniofacial morphology to piscivorous and durophagous diets. With the physiological demands of nutrient-poor, plant-based diets, adaptation to herbivory also significantly influences digestive physiology and morphology, so convergence onto similar herbivorous phenotypes in elements of postcranial morphology such as body shape and intestinal length might also be expected. Here, we integrate dietary and ecomorphological data, geometric morphometrics and phylogenetic comparative methods to inv

The hymenopteran ovipositor is a sophisticated probing organ composed of three sliding elements, interconnected with two tongue-and-groove (olistheter) mechanisms. The slender ovipositor must accommodate at least two mechanical requirements: the strength to puncture a substrate and the flexibility to navigate through it. During puncturing, the ovipositor is often mechanically stabilized with external supports, while coordinated pushing and pulling of the three ovipositor elements generate motions through the substrate. Both mechanisms reduce bending moments along the ovipositor thereby prevent
