Intracranial perineural metastasis of adenoid cystic carcinoma of head and neck.

Three cases of intracranial perineural metastasis from adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck are presented. The metastases presented more than 1 year (14 months to 5.5 years) after the primary tumor had been successfully treated without any evidence of local recurrence. Computed tomography of the intracranial metastasis demonstrated well-demarcated, hyperdense, enhancing extraaxial masses indistinguishable from meningioma. An intracranial extraaxial mass lesion with the appearance of a meningioma in a patient with known adenoid cystic carcinoma of the head and neck, regardless of the p

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the nasopharynx. Case reports and literature review.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the nasopharynx is a rare disease with 34 previously reported cases in the literature. We report three additional cases with clinical presentation, treatment, and outcome. The presenting symptoms were facial pain in one case, middle ear effusion and epistaxis in another, and diplopia in the third. Radiotherapy was administered with relief of symptoms in all three cases. However, two patients with long-term follow-up developed local recurrence as well as distant metastases. The literature review showed that patients with this disease present with symptoms and signs s

Adenoid histamine and its possible relationship to secretory otitis media.

We have shown that adenoid tissue contains large amounts of the inflammatory mediator histamine. Children with fluid present in both ears at operation were found to have increased amounts of histamine in their adenoid tissue compared to a group with no signs or symptoms of SOM. Also mouth breathing and nasal obstruction were associated with adenoid histamine content whereas other signs and symptoms were not. No significant differences in adenoid weight were seen between SOM and non SOM patients. Histamine, both free and cell-associated, was found in nasopharyngeal secretions and middle-ear flu

Tympanometric findings in patients with adenoid hyperplasia, chronic sinusitis and tonsillitis.

Tympanograms were done on 120 patients with adenoid hyperplasia, chronic sinusitis and chronic tonsillitis to measure the middle-ear pressur … he normal control group. Hence, eustachian tube dysfunction is maximum in patients with obstructing adenoids, less in chronic sinusitis and least in chronic tonsillitis.

Subpopulation of adenoidal lymphocytes of recurrent infection in the upper respiratory tract.

A subpopulation of adenoidal lymphocytes was determined by the E- and EAC-rosetting techniques in order to study an immunological profile of adenoids in 61 children with recurrent otitis media, rhinosinusitis or recurrent tonsillitis. Though there was no significant difference in E- and EAC-rosette forming cells of adenoid tissues from children with recurrent infection in the upper respiratory tract, our results indicated the following. (1) A higher proportion of EAC-rosette forming cells (EAC-RFC) without a change of E-RFC was found in the adenoids of children with recurrent tonsillitis than …

Growth of the nasopharynx and adenoid development from one to eighteeen years.

1. The dimensions of the nasopharynx, the adenoids and the nasopharyngeal airway were analyzed in twelve subjects selected from the longitudinal growth study of the Child Research Council of Denver. 2. The nasopharyngeal area was defined by four skeletally defined lines which formed a trapezoid. The nasopharyngeal area was divided into an adenoid-pharyngeal wall and airway areas which were measured using a polar planimeter. The trapezoid analysis proved to be a useful technique for quantification of nasopharyngeal dimensions. 3. The growth of the nasopharynx from nine months to 18 years was es…

[Effect of resection of adenoids and/or tonsil on the immune indexes in children with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome].

Objective: To study the effect on immune indexes in children with obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) before and after resection of adenoid and/or tonsil. Methods: A total of 100 children with OSAHS due to adenoid hypertrophy were enrolled in Department of Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, the Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University from December 2016 to December 2018. Some cases were complicated with tonsil hypertrophy or chronic tonsillitis. 6 ml of fasting peripheral venous blood were collected from all subjects at the 1st day before surgery, 4th day, 1 month, 3

The ubiquity of asymptomatic respiratory viral infections in the tonsils and adenoids of children and their impact on airway obstruction.

BACKGROUND: Airway obstruction due to enlargement of tonsils and adenoids is a common pediatric problem resulting in sleep disordered breathing. The cause for the relatively abnormal growth of tonsils and adenoids is poorly understood. METHODS: Non-acutely ill children undergoing tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy (T&A) for various reasons were enrolled prospectively in a study to determine the frequency of asymptomatic respiratory viral infections in each lymphoid tissue and to relate the number and types of virus to the degree of airway obstruction. Molecular techniques were used to detect 9 r…

Cervical Adenoid Basal Carcinoma With High-grade Squamous Component: True Mixed Carcinoma or Colonization of Adenoid Basal Carcinoma by High-grade Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion?

Adenoid basal carcinoma (ABC) is a rare clinically indolent human papillomavirus-associated cervical neoplasm with uniformly bland morphology which in pure form does not metastasize. Many cases co-exist with a human papillomavirus-associated high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) or squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). The ABC and high-grade squamous components may be clearly separate, albeit intermingled, and when the high-grade squamous component is invasive, the tumor is designated a mixed carcinoma, with clinical behavior determined by the non-ABC component. In other cases, discrete n

The Adenoids but Not the Palatine Tonsils Serve as a Reservoir for Bacteria Associated with Secretory Otitis Media in Small Children.

Acute otitis media (AOM), secretory otitis media (SOM), and acute pharyngotonsillitis are the most frequent reasons for visits to general practitioners, pediatricians, and otolaryngologists. Microbial colonization of the epithelial lining of Waldeyer's lymphatic tissues, consisting of the palatine tonsils, lingual tonsils, adenoids, and Eustachian tube tonsil, is a well-known clinical challenge during infancy due to frequent episodes of upper respiratory tract infections. However, no previous studies have investigated the combined role of the palatine tonsils and the adenoids as a reservoir fo…

Changes in tonsils and adenoids in children with posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder: report of three cases with early involvement of Waldeyer's ring.

Posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorder (PTLD) is an infrequent complication of transplantation in children, and this report emphasizes the value of tonsil and adenoid biopsy in the early management of this potentially life threatening condition. In all three cases biopsy specimens of tonsils and adenoids were diagnostic of polymorphic diffuse B-cell hyperplasia (PBCH). Immunophenotyping showed no immunoglobulin (Ig) light chain restriction, although immunoglobulin heavy chain (IgH) gene rearrangement was monoclonal in two cases. Despite an absence of serological evidence for acute Epstein…
