INTRODUCTION: Reading processes in Brazilian pre-adolescent and adolescent students are scarcely investigated, and it is essential to identify gaps and possible dyslexic students that have not yet been determined. Therefore, the objective of this study was to characterize the reading processes in adolescents and develop criteria to identify Brazilian students at risk for dyslexia in middle school.
METHODS: Two hundred six students participated in the study, divided into four groups: 55 students (6th grade), 54 students (7th grade), 46 students (8th grade), and 51 students (9th grade). Initial

BACKGROUND: Early-life mercury (Hg) exposure has been associated with adverse cardiometabolic health effects, though the evidence remains inconclusive. This study aims to evaluate the association between prenatal and postnatal Hg exposure and cardiometabolic risk factors in 15-year-old adolescents, considering the influence of sex, fish consumption, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) intake, and an obesity-related polygenic risk score (PRS).
METHODS: Participants comprised 243 mother-adolescent pairs from the Spanish INMA (Childhood and Environment) cohorts. Total Hg (THg) levels

Strong Teens and Resilient Minds (STORM) is a multimodal, school-based approach for depression and suicide prevention in adolescents that is currently implemented in a region in the Netherlands. The STORM approach will be implemented in new regions in the coming years. This study used the implementation mapping protocol to report on the development of the STORM implementation plan. First, a needs assessment was conducted through semi-structured interviews with stakeholders and brainstorming sessions with regional programme leaders in the two regions that started implementing STORM in 2023. This study examines the development of vulnerable self-disclosure in supportive interactions from ages 13 to 29. A diverse community sample (N = 184; 85 boys 99 girls; 58% white, 29% Black, 13% other identity groups) participated in annual observed interactions with close friends and romantic partners. Participants were observed as they sought and provided support to their best friends each year from age 13 to 18, and as they sought support from their romantic partners from age 19 to 29. Random intercept cross-lagged panel models were used to parse markers of within-individual change in vulner

INTRODUCTION: Avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) is an eating disorder characterised by a pattern of eating that leads to failure to meet appropriate nutritional and/or energy needs.
METHOD: In the absence of evidence-based inpatient guidelines for adolescents with ARFID, we set out to develop and pilot an inpatient protocol for adolescents with ARFID. Identification of the key differences between managing inpatients with ARFID and anorexia nervosa (AN) led to modification of an existing AN protocol with the goals of better meeting patient needs, enhancing alignment with outpat

Culture is a central theme across various theories and disciplines, influencing behavior and self-perception through interactions within social groups, families, and legal systems. This influence extends to the general population and particularly impacts sexual and gender minorities (SGMs), resulting in minority stress that contributes to mental health issues and the development of Early Maladaptive Schemas (EMSs). Adolescents within these groups face typical developmental stressors-such as hormonal changes and societal pressures-compounded by prejudice, increasing their vulnerability to depre

Eating disorders can significantly impact the psychosocial functioning and physical health of adolescents. Early and effective treatment is crucial to prevent long-lasting and potentially devastating adverse effects. The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence has recommended cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) for eating disorders in adolescents when family therapy is unacceptable, contraindicated, or ineffective. This recommendation was primarily based on the review of promising results from the enhanced version of CBT (CBT-E) adapted for adolescents with eating disorders aged betwee

Empathy is at the core of our social world, yet multidomain factors that affect its development in socially sensitive periods, such as adolescence, are incompletely understood. To address this gap, this study investigated associations between social, environmental and mental health factors, and their temporal changes, on adolescent empathetic behaviors/emotions and, for comparison, callous unemotional (CU) traits and behaviors, in the early longitudinal Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development sample (baseline: n = 11062; 2-year follow-up: n = 9832, median age = 119 and 144 months, respectively)

The prevalence of overweight and obesity in youth with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D) now exceeds that of youth without T1D. Comorbid T1D and excess adiposity are associated with multiple serious negative health outcomes. Unfortunately, youth with T1D are often excluded from and/or not referred to standard behavioral lifestyle interventions. This is often attributed to the complexities of managing T1D and an effort not to overburden persons who have T1D. Furthermore, standard behavioral weight management intervention recommendations can be perceived as contradicting T1D disease management (e.g

The two-hit stress model predicts that exposure to stress at two different time-points in life may increase or decrease the risk of developing stress-related disorders later in life. Most studies based on the two-hit stress model have investigated early postnatal stress as the first hit with adult stress as the second hit. Adolescence, however, represents another highly sensitive developmental window during which exposure to stressful events may affect programming outcomes following exposure to stress in adulthood. Here, we discuss the programming effects of different types of stressors (socia

Subcortical brain regions play essential roles in the pathology of social anxiety disorder (SAD). While adolescence is the peak period of SAD, the relationships between altered development of the subcortical regions during this period and SAD are still unclear. This study investigated the age-dependent alterations in structural co-variance among subcortical regions and between subcortical and cortical regions, aiming to reflect aberrant coordination during development in the adolescent with SAD. High-resolution T1-weighted images were obtained from 76 adolescents with SAD and 67 healthy contro

T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) accounts for 10%-15% of pediatric ALL, and its frequency increases during the adolescent and young adult (AYA) periods. The improvements in pediatric T-ALL outcomes have been achieved through the treatment intensification strategies addressing the cranial radiotherapy omission issue. Furthermore, pediatric-inspired regimens have been adopted for AYA patients with T-ALL, improving outcomes. In Japan, the Japanese Pediatric Leukemia/Lymphoma Study Group (JPLSG) ALL-T11/JALSG T-ALL-211-U trial has been conducted for newly diagnosed patients with T-ALL a

BACKGROUND: High survival rates of children diagnosed with cancer have led to a growing population of women with premature ovarian failure (POF) due to chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The POF process occurs due to the disruption of the hypothalamic-pituitary and gonadal axis followed by the delay of puberty development. Evaluation of reproductive function in children with cancer is essential to determine the fertility preservation plan. This study aimed to describe reproductive functions in children and adolescents with cancer who received chemotherapy based on Tanner stage evaluation, menstrua

Hyperglycemia is a common manifestation in the course of severe disease and is the result of acute metabolic and hormonal changes associated with various factors such as trauma, stress, surgery, or infection. Numerous studies demonstrate the association of adverse clinical events with stress hyperglycemia. This article briefly describes the pathophysiological mechanisms which lead to hyperglycemia under stressful circumstances particularly in the pediatric and adolescent population. The importance of prevention of hyperglycemia, especially for children, is emphasized and the existing models fo

Scholars have only just begun to examine elements of young adolescents' social ecologies that explain naturalistic variation in trait mindfulness and its development over time. We argue that trait mindfulness develops as a function of chronically encountered ecologies that are likely to foster or thwart the repeated enactment of mindful states over time. Using data from 4,593 fourth and seventh grade students (50% female; MageG4 = 9.02; 71% English first language) from 32 public school districts in British Columbia (BC), Canada, we examined links from peer belonging, connectedness with adults

IMPORTANCE: Maturation of white matter fiber systems subserves cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and motor development during adolescence. Hazardous drinking during this active neurodevelopmental period may alter the trajectory of white matter microstructural development, potentially increasing risk for developing alcohol-related dysfunction and alcohol use disorder in adulthood.
OBJECTIVE: To identify disrupted adolescent microstructural brain development linked to drinking onset and to assess whether the disruption is more pronounced in younger rather than older adolescents.

BACKGROUND: The suspicion of a disorder of sex development (DSD) often arises at birth, when the newborn presents with ambiguous genitalia, or even during prenatal ultrasound assessments. Less frequently, the aspect of the external genitalia is typically female or male, and the diagnosis of DSD may be delayed until a karyotype is performed for another health issue, or until pubertal age when a girl presents with absence of thelarche and/or menarche or a boy consults for gynaecomastia and/or small testes.
SUMMARY: In this review, we provide a practical, updated approach to clinical and hormona
