Psychoses in 441 hospital patients from 210 families have been investigated comparatively. In 106 families 109 parents and 117 children suffer as do 215 siblings in 104 families. It has been established that the sexual appurtenance does not have a decisive importance in the genetic transmission of the psychoses, while comparing the diagnoses, a high percentage (84.5%) of coincidence is founded. Similarities appear in the clinical features, in their course, and the therapeutical effect. The psychoses begin at an earlier age and are taking a heavier course in children, when compared to parents a

Anhedonia is a transdiagnostic construct that can occur independent of other symptoms of depression; its role in neuropsychiatric disorders that are not primarily affective, such as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), hoarding disorder (HD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has received limited attention. This paper addresses this gap. First, the data revealed a positive contribution of anhedonia, beyond the effects of general depression, to symptom severity in OCD but not in HD or PTSD. Second, anhedonia was operationalized as a reduced sensitivity to rewards, which allowed employin

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the social adjustment in childhood of people who as adults have psychiatric disorders.
DESIGN: Subjects in a prospectively followed up cohort (the national child development study) who had been admitted as adults to psychiatric hospitals were compared with the rest of the cohort on ratings of social behaviour made by teachers at the ages of 7 and 11 years.
SUBJECTS: 40 adult patients with schizophrenic illnesses, 35 with affective psychoses, and 79 with neurotic illness who had been admitted for psychiatric reasons by the age of 28. 1914 randomly selected members of

BACKGROUND: The striatum is abnormal in schizophrenia and possibly represents a common neurobiological mechanism underlying psychotic disorders. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging studies have not reached a consensus regarding striatal dysconnectivity in schizophrenia, although these studies generally find impaired frontoparietal and salience network connectivity. The goal of the current study was to clarify the pattern of corticostriatal connectivity, including whether corticostriatal dysconnectivity is transdiagnostic and extends into psychotic bipolar disorder.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has shown that childhood trauma contributes to the onset and maintenance of psychosis. However, few studies have accounted for the effects of lifetime trauma and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and none have examined the mediating role of emotion dysregulation in symptom maintenance after severe trauma. The purpose of this study is to determine whether maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies (CERS) and global emotion dysregulation mediate the effects of probable PTSD on depressive symptoms, and whether this pathway extends to influence positive

BACKGROUND: Relapse of serious mental illness (psychotic and bipolar disorders; SMI) in the postpartum period is potentially devastating for mother and baby. There is limited evidence on whether medication in the perinatal period is protective against postpartum relapse for women with SMI particularly non-affective psychoses. We aimed to investigate risk factors for postpartum relapse, particularly the potential prophylactic effects of medication.
METHODS: Using an anonymised resource of comprehensive electronic secondary mental health care records linked with maternity data, women with histo

This report describes the clinical characteristics of psychotic patients who received a 6-month longitudinal research diagnosis of psychosis not otherwise specified (NOS) or for whom no consensus diagnosis was reached. The reasons why these subjects could not be classified into a specific DSM-III-R category, their classification under the proposed DSM-IV criteria, their reclassification at 24-month follow-up, and differences between these groups and patients with schizophrenia and affective disorders in demographic characteristics, initial clinical features, and short-term course are explored.

Throughout the history of humanity it has been said that the individual ego, is a very limited form of identity. Spirituality is shaped by larger social circumstances and by the beliefs and values present in the wider culture. In Asia, as compared to other regions, people fall back on spiritualism. Mental health professionals, laymen and patients have great interest in spirituality and religious activities but still it is one of the most neglected fields of life. Spirituality and religion often are used interchangeably and it has also been described as an individual search for meaning. In psyc

The purpose of the present study is to investigate the relationship between dysphoric states (episodes in which irritable mood is prominent and relatively persistent) and manic-depressive illness. A further purpose is to clarify the probable causal influence of chemotherapy and the social consequences concerning dysphoria. The observations carried out on 14 patients are illustrated by 2 case reports. A strong tie seems to exist between dysphoric state and manic-depressive illness, especially with respect to typical biorhythmic disturbances. Although the origin of such states is generally unkno

Since the basic problem in the use of hypnosis in physiopathological obstetric and gynaecological conditions is the choice of the right method for the right indications, the symptoms and clinical conditions which may benefit from this treatment are discussed. The following gynaecological indications are suggested: dysmenorrhoea and algomenorrhoea; hypogastric plexalgia; frigidity; dyspareunia and vaginismus; psychogenetic amenorrhoea; postoperative psychoses and depressions; gynaecological somatisations of psychotic states. In the obstetric field the main indication are: hiperemesis gravidarum

Neurotic depression, the most commonly used psychiatric diagnosis, has multiple meanings that are often used interchangeably in clinical practice. The authors identify six different meanings of neurotic depression and present data from a study of 90 depressed inpatients to determine how many patients met several different criteria; 16 patients met four sets of criteria. The overlap that exists between the different meanings is higher than chance alone but not sufficiently high to allow complete interchangeability. Until new diagnostic classes are developed, the authors recommend that the term

OBJECTIVE: To define psychopathological and phenomenological characteristics of the apocalyptic variant of end-world delusion with religious content (EWDRC) in schizophrenia, to identify features of clinical dynamics of delusional disorders and their interaction with delusional behavior of patients.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 28 patients with schizophrenia (F20.01, F20.02 according to ICD-10) and EWDRC were examined. Clinical-psychopathological and follow-up methods were used.
RESULTS: The development of the end-world delusional ideas occurred in unstructured affective-delusional disor

Sexual function in 24 patients with major affective disorders who were given prophylactic lithium treatment was compared with that of a control group of surgical outpatients with no known psychiatric disease. Changes in sexual function during lithium treatment were also recorded retrospectively. Sexual dysfunctions were described by about one-fourth of both female patients and controls. About one-third of the male patients and controls reported sexual dysfunctions. We cannot exclude tha lithium in combination with other psychotropic drugs may increase the frequency of sexual dysfunction. Chang

INTRODUCTION: Migrants face numerous risk factors for mental disorders, including stressors and traumatic events during the pre-, peri-, and post-migratory phases. Acculturation stress, a significant post-migratory stressor, can adversely affect mental health during the cultural adaptation process. This study aims to assess the clinical implications of acculturation stress in migrants admitted to a psychiatric intensive care unit, with a focus on identifying predictors of acculturative stress and their impact on clinical outcomes.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of 268 immigrant p

BACKGROUND: A substantial amount of refugees (10-30%) suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In Denmark there are different facilities specialised in psychiatric treatment of trauma-affected refugees. A previously published case report from such a facility in Denmark shows that some patients suffer from secondary psychotic symptoms alongside their PTSD. The aim of this study was to illustrate the characteristics and estimate the prevalence of psychotic features in a clinical population of trauma-affected refugees with PTSD.
METHODS: Psychiatric records from 220 consecutive patient

Schizophrenia is the most common psychotic illness, typically appearing between the late teenage years and the mid-30s. The first episode of psychosis may be preceded by a prodromal period. Schizophrenia symptoms fall into six common symptom clusters: delusions and hallucinations, disorganization of speech, cognitive dysfunction, negative symptoms, affective symptoms, and motor system abnormalities. The diagnosis is based on criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, including exclusion of other possible medical or psychiatric etiologies of psychosis.

A 23 year follow up of deaths in a population of mentally disordered patients was carried out, and a typical case history is reported. A quarter (71) of the deaths reported were unnatural, verdicts of suicide or accidental death or open verdicts having been recorded. For men in most age groups the proportion of deaths by suicide was two to three times greater than in the general population in 1982; the rate among those aged 25-29 was five times that in the general population. Differences in the rate of unnatural death among diagnostic categories of mental illness were not significant, but the

A modified dexamethasone suppression test (DST) has had unprecedented evaluation among biologic tests proposed for clinical use in psychiatry. It has not proved to reflect pathophysiologic changes at the level of the central nervous system or pituitary, and tissue availability of dexamethasone itself may contribute to test outcome. The sensitivity of the DST in major depression is limited (about 44% in over 5,000 cases) but is higher in psychotic affective disorders and mixed manic-depressive states (67% to 78%). The high specificity of the DST vs control subjects (over 90%) is not maintained
