Moxibustion attenuates neurogenic detrusor overactivity in spinal cord injury rats by inhibiting M2/ATP/P2X3 pathway.

PURPOSE: Activation of muscarinic receptors located in bladder sensory pathways is generally considered to be the primary contributor for driving the pathogenesis of neurogenic detrusor overactivity following spinal cord injury. The present study is undertaken to examine whether moxibustion improves neurogenic detrusor overactivity via modulating the abnormal muscarinic receptor pathway. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Female Sprague-Dawley rats were subjected to spinal cord injury with T9-10 spinal cord transection. Fourteen days later, animals were received moxibustion treatment for one week. Urodyn

Neuro-ophthalmologic diagnosis and therapy of central nervous system trauma.

Although direct injury to the orbit and globes can easily result in ophthalmologic disorders, it is less appreciated that distant head injury can similarly result in injury to the retrobulbar afferent visual pathways or cranial nerves. The physician must be suspicious of latent and manifest injuries to the neuro-ophthalmologic system after head trauma and maintain an awareness of the need for timely intervention in a subset of these disorders. Even patients with injuries removed from the eyes should be checked for visual problems, and if any are detected, a careful neuro-ophthalmologic examina

Vestibularly evoked climbing-fiber responses modulate simple spikes in rabbit cerebellar Purkinje neurons.

The nodulus receives a primary vestibular afferent input from the ipsilateral labyrinth and a vestibularly related climbing-fiber input originating from the contralateral labyrinth. Previously we demonstrated that increased discharge of vestibularly evoked climbing-fiber responses (CFRs) in nodular Purkinje cells was correlated with decreased discharge of simple spikes (SSs). This left unresolved the question of whether vestibularly evoked antiphasic behavior of CFRs and SSs reflects a common neural mechanism or the activation of two separate parallel pathways. We answered this question using

Comprehensive Brain-wide Mapping of Afferent and Efferent Nuclei Associated with the Heart in the Mouse.

Normal heart function depends on complex regulation by the brain, and abnormalities in the brain‒heart axis affect various diseases, such as myocardial infarction and anxiety disorders. However, systematic tracking of the brain regions associated with the input and output of the heart is lacking. In this study, we injected retrograde transsynaptic pseudorabies virus (PRV) and anterograde transsynaptic herpes simplex virus (HSV) into the left ventricular wall of mice to identify the whole-brain regions associated with the input to and output from the heart. We successfully detected PRV and HSV

Reciprocal connectivity of the periaqueductal gray with the ponto-medullary respiratory network in rat.

Synaptic activities of the periaqueductal gray (PAG) can modulate or appropriate the respiratory motor activities in the context of behavior and emotion via descending projections to nucleus retroambiguus. However, alternative anatomical pathways for the mediation of PAG-evoked respiratory modulation via core nuclei of the brainstem respiratory network remains only partially described. We injected the retrograde tracer Cholera toxin subunit B (CT-B) in the pontine Kölliker-Fuse nucleus (KFn, n = 5), medullary Bötzinger (BötC, n = 3) and pre-Bötzinger complexes (pre-BötC; n = 3), and the caudal

Towards functional restoration for persons with limb amputation: A dual-stage implementation of regenerative agonist-antagonist myoneural interfaces.

While amputation has traditionally been viewed as a failure of therapy, recent developments in amputation surgery and neural interfacing demonstrate improved functionality and bidirectional communication with prosthetic devices. The agonist antagonist myoneural interface (AMI) is one such bi-directional neural communication model comprised of two muscles, an agonist and an antagonist, surgically connected in series within the amputated residuum such that contraction of one muscle stretches the other. By preserving agonist-antagonist muscle dynamics, the AMI allows proprioceptive signals from m

Unexplained syncope: diagnostic value of tilt-table testing.

Vasovagal syncope is a common syncope in patients who have no structural heart disease and occurs more often in young adults. It typically occurs in the erect posture, either standing or sitting. Upon recognition of the prodrome associated with NCS, subjects may avert syncope by lying down or putting the head between the knees. Use of head-up tilting is a recognized diagnostic tool and widely used for the evaluation of vasovagal syncope. However, cardiac diagnostic tests are not 100% accurate. This fact was recently underscored by what occurred in the recent tragic loss, due to ventricular fib

Urinary bladder and urethral responses to pelvic and hypogastric nerve stimulation and their relation to vasoactive intestinal polypeptide in the anaesthetized dog.

The effects on the urinary bladder and urethra of pelvic and hypogastric nerve stimulation and their relation to vasoactive intestinal polypeptides (VIP) were investigated in the anaesthetized dog. Both pelvic and hypogastric nerve stimulation elicited a twofold increase in urinary bladder blood flow and a clear-cut increase in bladder venous effluent VIP concentration. Hypogastric nerve stimulation induced an initial, partly alpha-adrenergic and partly non-adrenergic, non-cholinergic, contraction of the urinary bladder followed by a relaxation. The urethra response was a maintained alpha-adre

The value of brain stem auditory, visual and somatosensory evoked potentials and blink reflexes in the diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

Cervical and cortical somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) following electrical stimulation of the median nerve and blink reflexes (BR) following electrical stimulation of the supraorbital nerve were recorded in 30 normal subjects aged 20-49 years. Subjects aged 40-49 had longer SEP latencies than subjects aged 20-39 years. A total of 29 slightly affected patients with multiple sclerosis (MS) aged 26-49 years, including four patients without clinical signs (suspected MS) and 19 patients with signs indicating only one lesion (possible MS) were examined by low-rate random-stimulated brain stem

Presynaptic action of barbiturates in the frog spinal cord.

The action of pentobarbital on primary afferents of the isolated frog spinal cord was analyzed with sucrose gap and intracellular recordings techniques. Pentobarbital in concentrations generally considered to be in the anesthetic range greatly prolonged presynaptic inhibition and also depolarized primary afferents. The depolarization was accompanied by an increase in excitability and resulted from activation of gamma-aminobutyric acid receptors, possibly by a direct action on these receptors, since the depolarization was reversibly blocked by gamma-aminobutyric acid, but not by glycine, antago

Evidence for acid-sensing ion channel 3 (ASIC3) involvement in cough resulting from aspiration of gastric fluid.

Cough is essential to airway defence following aspiration. Using a relevant animal model, we set out to identify the mechanisms by which gastric fluid evokes coughing, the vagal afferents responsible for initiating this reflex and the ion channels directly activated by components of gastric fluid. We studied gastric fluid and citric acid evoked cough reflexes in guinea-pigs and, in parallel, their ability to activate airway vagal afferent nerves. Additionally, we utilized a single cell RT-PCR approach to determine the expression of acid sensitive ion channels by the vagal afferent neurones reg

Abnormal cerebral processing of oesophageal stimuli in patients with noncardiac chest pain (NCCP).

In noncardiac chest pain (NCCP), altered visceral perception may result from abnormal cerebral processing of sensory input rather than abnormalities of afferent pathways. However, the interactions between symptoms, autonomic function and oesophageal stimuli are poorly studied. Oesophageal stimulation elicits reproducible cortical evoked potentials [CEP] and modulates heart rate variability via vagal pathways, as visible on power spectrum analysis of heart rate variability [PS-HRV]. These methods are increasingly used to study the function of visceral afferent neural pathways in human. The aim …

[Lower urinary tract function and its disorders].

The lower urinary tract provides two modes of operation--storage and elimination of urine. The normal function results in the coordination o … ors, volume receptors and "silent receptors", which become nociceptors following the sensitization. Afferent pathways terminate on spinal interneurons. Spinal interneurons relay information to the brain or to other regions of the spinal cord. Because micturition reflexes are mediated by disynaptic or polysynaptic pathways, interneuronal mechanisms are of crucial im …

Greater occipital nerve block is ineffective in chronic tension type headache.

Patients with primary headache syndromes often describe a pain distribution, that does not respect the trigeminal innervation of the head. In addition to pain in frontal areas, innervated by the first (ophthalmic) division of the trigeminal nerve, the pain often occurs in occipital parts of the head, innervated by the greater occipital nerve, a branch of the C2 spinal nerve root. Anatomical and neurophysiological studies in animals suggest a convergence of cervical and trigeminal input in the trigeminal nucleus caudalis. Modulation of this pathway has been discussed to be of potential benefit

The distribution of afferent neurons in the trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus and the central projection of afferent fibers of the mylohyoid nerve in the rat.

Horseradish peroxidase conjugated to wheatgerm agglutinin (HRP:WGA) was injected into the proximal cut ends of three branches of the mylohyoid nerve in rats: the branch to the mylohyoid muscle (BrMh), the branch to the anterior belly of the digastricus muscle (BrDg), and the cutaneous branch (BrCu). HRP-labeled cells were detected in the ipsilateral caudal portion of the trigeminal mesencephalic nucleus (Vmes) and the ipsilateral ventromedial division of the trigeminal motor nucleus, except when HRP:WGA was applied to the BrCu. Morphologically, all labeled Vmes cells were of the pseudounipolar

Calcitonin-gene-related-peptide-immunoreactive innervation of the rat head with emphasis on specialized sensory structures.

The distribution of calcitonin-gene-related peptide-like immunoreactivity (CGRP-IR) was studied in sections of decalcified rat head and selected whole-mount preparations in order to address the complex peptidergic innervation patterns in peripheral cephalic specialized zones and to examine neuronal ganglia in situ. Labeled neuron somata in trigeminal, glossopharyngeal, and vagal ganglia comprised a large proportion of small to medium size type B ganglion cells. Parasympathetic ganglia (ciliary, otic, sphenopalatine, submandibular) revealed a small population of labeled somata and numerous peri
