Reversibility of alcoholic cardiomyopathy with abstention from alcohol.

A 46-year-old chronic alcoholic patient with typical and severe congestive cardiomyopathy was studied hemodynamically on two separate occasions. The second study followed after a 1 1/2-year period of virtually complete abstention from alcohol and revealed that the left ventricular dysfunction had disappeared. Depsite persisting atrial fibrillation, the response to moderate exercise and to plasma volume expansion was within the normal range. When last seen, 29 months after initial hospitalization, the patient was symptom-free and was not given any treatment.

Alcoholic hyalin, microfilaments and microtubules in alcoholic hepatitis.

The alcoholic hyalin which is composed of light and dark occasionally swollen and conglomerating filaments, is found to be surrounded by proliferated RER, hypertrophied Golgi apparatus and mitochondria containing enlarged matrical granules. Besides, microfilaments and some microtubules are seen in relation to the hyaline bodies. In biopsies where hyaline bodies are scarce, hepatocytes without alcoholic hyalin present similar changes and the Golgi apparatus is seen to contain very low density lipoprotein-like particles. These ultrastructural changes are suggested to be related to an early stage

Effects of Observable Parent Alcohol Consequences and Parent Alcohol Disorder on Adolescent Alcohol Expectancies.

BACKGROUND: Parental drinking and parent alcohol use disorder (AUD) are known predictors of adolescent positive alcohol expectancies, but their link to negative expectancies is unclear. Research suggests that parent drinking may indirectly predict adolescent expectancies through exposure to parental drinking events. However, exposure to parent negative alcohol consequences may be more relevant to adolescents' expectancies. The present study tested the mediating effect of parent observable negative alcohol consequences in the association between parent AUD and adolescent expectancies. METHODS:

The alcohol-preferring (P) and high-alcohol-drinking (HAD) rats--animal models of alcoholism.

The objective of this article is to review the literature on the utility of using the selectively bred alcohol-preferring (P) and high-alcohol-drinking (HAD) lines of rats in studies examining high alcohol drinking in adults and adolescents, craving-like behavior, and the co-abuse of alcohol with other drugs. The P line of rats meets all of the originally proposed criteria for a suitable animal model of alcoholism. In addition, the P rat exhibits high alcohol-seeking behavior, demonstrates an alcohol deprivation effect (ADE) under relapse drinking conditions, consumes amounts of ethanol during

Alcohol Use Disorders in Alcoholic Liver Disease.

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is common in alcoholic liver disease (ALD) and intrinsic to its pathophysiology. Optimal treatment requires a multidisciplinary team approach and a working alliance between patients and providers. Diagnosing AUD involves a combination of thorough history taking, physical examination, screening questionnaires, and alcohol biomarkers. Alcohol biomarkers have advantages and limitations of use of which clinicians should be aware. AUD treatment is effective, multifaceted, and can be tailored to each individual. Available treatment modalities are myriad: motivational enhan

Response to alcohol in females with a paternal history of alcoholism.

RATIONALE: Several studies have demonstrated that males with a family history of alcoholism (FHP) show less of a response to alcohol (e.g. lower ratings of intoxication) than males without a family history of alcoholism (FHN). The purpose of this pilot study was to determine if FHP females also showed a reduced sensitivity to alcohol compared to FHN females. OBJECTIVES: To determine if FHP females (n=16) were less sensitive to the subjective effects and performance-impairing effects of alcohol compared to FHN females (n=16). METHODS: The effects of placebo and alcohol (0.25, 0.50, 0.75 g/kg,

[Alcohol-induced cognitive disorder: alcohol dementia].

Cognitive impairment is frequently observed in patients with alcohol misuse or alcohol addiction. Multiple cognitive functions are reduced in these patients. Frontal lobe functions, as planning, abstract thinking, set shifting or continuous performance are most frequently affected. Alcohol amnestic syndrome, alcohol dementia and the Wernicke-Korsakow-Syndrome constitute distinct entities. Alcohol dementia follows the diagnostic criteria of dementia with clear evidence for alcohol abuse or alcohol addiction. The diagnostic procedure of alcohol-induced cognitive impairment includes medical histo

Latest approaches to preventing alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

Scientists and policymakers have explored numerous strategies to prevent alcohol abuse and dependence as well as the adverse social, legal, and medical consequences of alcohol use. Many of these efforts have focused on reducing alcohol-impaired driving and the associated injuries and fatalities. As reported in this article, such efforts have included general deterrence laws (e.g., reduced minimum legal drinking age, administrative license revocation, and lower legal limits for blood alcohol concentrations), measures targeted at repeat offenders, and measures to control alcohol availability (e.

Molecular genetic aspects of alcohol metabolism and alcoholism.

Recent human genetic studies suggest that a predisposition to alcohol abuse and/or to develop alcoholism may be inherited. Pedigree analysis, linkage, and association studies have helped to detect marker loci and candidate genes that may prove useful in identifying individuals at risk. In particular, molecular genetic research into the causes of alcoholism has drawn attention to the potentially important role of alcohol- and acetaldehyde-metabolizing enzymes, alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). Functional polymorphisms have been observed at various genes encoding the

[Physiopathology of acute alcoholic intoxication and alcoholic withdrawal].

Ethanol blood levels are the result of alcohol absorption and the process of its distribution, metabolism and excretion. Kinetics are complex and not yet well known. They can be influenced by acquired factors (type of alcohol ingested, association with fasting or eating, induction or inhibition of ethanol metabolism) or by genetically determined differences in the activity of alcohol and of acetaldehyde dehydrogenase. The presence of ethanol in the organism leads to various consequences. On the one hand, hydropic changes on membranes modify their function and thus that of membrane proteins (pa

A biobehavioral research perspective on alcohol abuse and alcoholism.

An empirical biobehavioral research approach to the conditions generally identified as alcohol abuse and alcoholism emphasizes the temporal ordering of participating biochemical, physiological, and behavioral events that provide an operational basis for characterizing the functional aspects of this complex disorder and identifying distinguishable features of the alcohol abuse and dependence process. The available evidence suggests that alcoholism is a condition determined by a host of continuous variables rather than an entity possessing static qualities that imply intractability. The challeng

[Chronic alcoholism--alcohol sequelae--causes of death].

In this study 444 chronic alcoholic patients, hospitalized at the beginning of this study, were followed up for 4 to 7 years (31). During this time 101 patients died (23.2%), with whom severeness of disease as well as the extent of social depravation could be identified as factors influencing mortality. Beginning in January of 1982 we investigated mortality of the population of a village with a similar socio-cultural background (working situation, rural population, wine-growing area). As it was possible to cooperate with the local general practitioner, who has been living and working in this v
