Living kidney donation: considerations and decision-making.

BACKGROUND: When possible, renal transplantation is the treatment of choice for patients with end-stage kidney disease. Technological developments in immunology have made it possible to perform kidney transplants between donors and recipients despite antibodies against the donor organ. This allows for a wider range of relationships between recipient and donor. We investigated experiences of, and reflections on, kidney donation among genetic and non-genetic living donors before first consultation at the transplant centre. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to investigate early experiences in the process o

The role of altruistic behavior in generalized anxiety disorder and major depression among adults in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Although previous studies found protective associations of altruistic behaviors (AB) with positive mental health outcomes, these studies were limited to unspecified mental health outcomes and non-nationally representative studies. It is needed to examine the association of AB with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) and major depression (MD). METHODS: Data collected from the National Survey of Midlife Development in the United States (MIDUS) in 1995-1996 for those aged between 25 and 74, who completed both the telephone survey and the self-administered questionnaire (N=4,242) were

Motivations for participating in an HIV vaccine efficacy trial.

Understanding why people join HIV vaccine efficacy trials is critical for trial recruitment and education efforts. We assessed participants' motivations for joining the VaxGen VAX004 study, a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 3 multicenter trial. Of 5417 participants, 94% were men who have sex with men (MSM) and 6% were women at risk for heterosexual transmission of HIV. Most participants gave altruistic reasons for trial participation: 99% reported having joined to help find an HIV vaccine, and 98% reported having joined to help their community. Some gave more personal reaso

Exploring willingness to participate in future Human Infection Studies in Lusaka, Zambia: A nested qualitative exploratory study.

Human Infection Studies (HIC) involve intentional infection of volunteers with a challenge agent or pathogen with the aim of understanding a … d to refusal to participate. Reasons for willingness to participate included monetary compensation, altruism and being part of a team that comes up with a vaccine. Though afraid of deliberate typhoid infection, potential participants are willing to consider participation if given adequate information, time to consult trusted persons, compensation and assur …

Personality trait predictors of placebo analgesia and neurobiological correlates.

Personality traits have been shown to interact with environmental cues to modulate biological responses including treatment responses, and p … bo administration. Statistical analyses showed that an aggregate of scores from Ego-Resiliency, NEO Altruism, NEO Straightforwardness (positive predictors) and NEO Angry Hostility (negative predictor) scales accounted for 25% of the variance in placebo analgesic responses. Molecular imaging showed that subjects scoring above the median in a composite of th …

Influence of socioeconomic and ethical factors on people's behaviour regarding the use of cadaveric organs.

An organ donation is based on feelings of human solidarity and altruism. This approach, however, has not improved the organ shortage problem. The following suggestions might help to dismantle the persistent barrier linked to organ donation. (1) Society should be aware that during our lifetime we might be as much potential organ recipients as organ donors. (2) Educational campaigns should integrate the notion that cadaver organs are an irreplaceable source of health for every member of society. (3) Communication campaigns should illustrate that in allowing the use of our organs after death, we …

Cadaveric donotransplantation: nurses' attitudes, knowledge and behaviour.

Human organ transplantation is an important treatment for certain medical conditions, and for irreversible organ failure. There is a shortfa … ion and only 10% clearly being opposed. However, nurses were found to share ambivalent attitudes of altruism and fear which appear to surround decisions about donation. Factor analysis was used to further explore nurses' attitude structure. Six factors were confirmed providing a non-significant likelihood ratio fit (P = 0.468) and a well reproduced correla …

Early life adversity shapes neural and behavioural responses to oxytocin during altruistic decision-making.

What makes some people willing to help strangers at a personal cost, while others are more hesitant or selective? Early life adversity - such as neglect or abuse - may shape how we respond to strangers in need later in life, yet the underlying neural mechanisms remain unclear. In this study we tested whether the neuropeptide oxytocin, a key modulator for a rich repertoire of social behaviours, influences altruistic decisions in adults with different childhood experiences. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and a validated altruistic donation task, the study showed that oxytocin

"We Don't Get Drugs Targeted for Us:" Applying the Integrated Behavioral Model to Understand Why Black Women Chose to Participate in a Breast Cancer Clinical Trial.

Guided by the integrated behavioral model, the authors interviewed 14 Black breast cancer survivors (N = 14) who had participated in a breast cancer clinical trial. This study aimed to better understand what may motivate Black women to engage in medical research and decide to participate in medical research. Findings revealed that Black women's altruistic desires to serve others and their communities are greatly influenced by the need to leave a "legacy" of better treatment for other Black women. The participants mostly learned about clinical trials through communicating with friends, family,

Predictors of successful pulmonary valve-sparing repair in pediatric humanitarian patients with Tetralogy of Fallot.

INTRODUCTION: The optimal surgical approach for right ventricular outflow tract obstruction in Tetralogy of Fallot aims to preserve the native pulmonary valve annulus, as this is associated with better long-term outcomes. Pediatric humanitarian patients often present with a delayed diagnosis and lack access to preoperative palliative treatments, reducing the likelihood of pulmonary valve annulus preservation and potentially compromising long-term outcomes. This study aims to identify independent predictors of successful pulmonary valve-sparing repair in pediatric humanitarian patients undergoi

'I followed the flood': a gender analysis of the moral and financial economies of forced migration.

What would a gender analysis of refugee crises reveal if one expanded the focus beyond female refugees, and acts of physical violence? This paper draws on qualitative research conducted in Denmark, Greece, Jordan, and Turkey in July and August 2016 to spotlight the gendered kinship, hierarchies, networks, and transactions that affect refugees. The coping strategies of groups often overlooked in the gender conversation are examined throughout this study, including those of male refugees and those making crossings outside of the context of a family unit. The analysis is theoretically situated at

Financial incentives for kidney donation: A comparative case study using synthetic controls.

Although many commentators called for increased efforts to incentivize organ donations, theorists and some evidence suggest these efforts will be ineffective. Studies examining the impact of tax incentives generally report zero/negative coefficients, but these studies incorrectly define their tax variables and rely on difference-in-differences despite likely failures of the parallel trends assumption. We identify the causal effect of tax legislation to serve as an organ donor on living kidney donation rates in the U.S. states using more precise tax data and allowing for heterogeneous time-vari

The utilization of unified protocols in behavioral cognitive therapy in transdiagnostic group subjects: A clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: The practicing of protocols based on behavioral cognitive therapy (CBT) have been frequently used in the last decades and adapted to better manage the necessities of patients and providers. OBJECTIVES: The goal is to build a treatment that is evidence-based - for that reason the unified protocol for multiple emotional disorders (transdiagnostics) have been utilized to simplify treatment - without losing scientific traits. The main goal of this study is to evaluate the unified protocol in groups of patients with depression and anxiety disorders. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a pool of

Maintaining baseline, corrective surgical care during asymmetrical warfare: a case study of a humanitarian mission in the safe zone of a neighboring country.

The current insurgency warfare in Iraq is of an unconventional or asymmetrical nature. The deteriorating security has resulted in problems recovering and maintaining essential health services. Before the 2003 war, Iraq was considered a developed country with the capacity to routinely perform baseline medical and surgical care. These procedures now are performed irregularly, if at all. Due to the unconventional warfare, traditional Military Medical Civilian Assistance Programs (MEDCAPs) and civilian humanitarian missions, which routinely are mobilized post-conflict, are unable to function. In D
