Clinical use of a bioactive glass particulate in the treatment of human osseous defects.

The dental practitioner has a wide choice of materials available for use in bone grafting procedures. A bioactive glass particulate possesses many favorable qualities not often found in other materials, including the ability to remain where placed even with adjacent suctioning; hemostasis; and incorporation into the host bone without the fibrous encapsulation encountered with most other synthetic materials. It is also quick and easy to prepare. This article reviews clinical experiences with PerioGlas in the setting of private practice periodontics, in which this material was used as the grafti

Ligation of an unusually large vessel during maxillary sinus floor augmentation. A case report.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the present case report was to document a maxillary sinus floor augmentation procedure involving ligation of a blood vessel with a nearly 3-mm diameter in the lateral wall of the maxillary sinus. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A bilateral maxillary sinus floor augmentation procedure was performed in a 51-year-old healthy man. The preoperative computed tomography scan revealed a bony canal within the lateral maxillary sinus wall of the right as well as the left side close to the alveolar ridge. RESULTS: A vessel with a diameter of nearly 3 mm was identified during the sinus fl

Implant bone rings. One-stage three-dimensional bone transplant technique: a case report.

A variety of techniques and materials has been used to provide the structural base of bone and soft tissue support for dental implants. Alveolar bone augmentation techniques include different surgical approaches such as guided bone regeneration, onlay grafting, interpositional grafting, distraction osteogenesis, ridge splitting, and socket preservation. In the case presented, a technique was used to augment the alveolar bone three-dimensionally with autologous "bone rings" and immediate implant placement in a 1-stage procedure following teeth extraction. Bone rings (circular osteotomies) were

Regenerating a Periodontal Defect Using Augmentation With Octacalcium Phosphate-Coated 100% Cancellous Bone Mineral: Clinical Case Report.

Alveolar bone loss threatens tooth stability and can lead to loss of function. When occurring in the esthetic zone, this can have acute social ramifications, decreasing the patient's quality of life. In the outlined case, a 65-year-old nonsmoking female patient with periodontitis presented with a periodontal defect in the anterior region, requiring bone regeneration. Treatment involved the application of an octacalcium phosphate-coated deproteinized bovine bone mineral consisting of 100% cancellous bone, along with adjuvant factors such as platelet concentrates and platelet-rich fibrin, to reg

Digital-guided Autotransplantation of Teeth with Autogenous Bone Augmentation: A Case Report.

Long-term dental defects are often accompanied by severe alveolar bone resorption, which compromises the maintenance of alveolar bone height and thickness, thereby increasing the complexity of restoration. This case report presents a 24-year-old female patient with a 6-month dental defect and alveolar bone resorption. The treatment consisted of autotransplanting the left mandibular third molar to the defect site, with the use of a three-dimensional printed donor tooth replica and the surgical guide for precise alveolar socket preparation. Simultaneously, autogenous bone harvested intraoperativ

Vertical Alveolar Ridge Regeneration by Means of Periosteal Activation-A Proof-of-Principle Study.

AIM: To assess the possibility of vertical alveolar ridge augmentation by means of activation of the periosteum. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six adult male Beagle dogs were used for the study. All premolars and first molars were extracted, and one vertical saucer-shaped bony defect was created on each side of the mandible. After 3 months of healing, full-thickness muco-periosteal flaps were elevated, and one distraction device was placed on each side of the mandible. The distraction plate was left submerged, and the activation mechanism connected to the distraction rod was exposed intra-orally. Th…

Three-Dimensional Radiological Assessment of Alveolar Bone Volume Preservation Using Bovine Bone Xenograft.

INTRODUCTION: Alveolar bone is critical in supporting natural teeth, dental implants as well as a removable and fixed prosthesis. Alveolar bone volume diminishes when its associated natural tooth is lost. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of bovine bone granules on alveolar bone socket augmentation for ridge preservation following atraumatic tooth extraction. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty medically fit patients (12 males and 8 females aged between 18 and 40 years) who needed noncomplicated tooth extraction of 1 mandibular premolar tooth were divided randomly a

Cleft width and secondary alveolar bone graft success.

Fifty-six cleft sites were reviewed prior to alveolar bone grafting and subsequently evaluated for graft success using study models, periapical and occlusal radiographs from the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic. All patients in this sample had presurgical orthodontics to expand and align the maxillary arch prior to alveolar bone grafting. Ninety-five percent of the grafts were done using iliac crest, the remaining 5% were cranial grafts. The alveolar bone grafting technique used was as described by Boyne and Sands (1972, 1976). Cleft width was measured on a radiograph taken no more than 1 month p

Pre-augmentation soft tissue expansion improves scaffold-based vertical bone regeneration - a randomized study in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: Soft tissue (ST) dehiscence with graft exposure is a frequent complication of vertical augmentation. Flap dehiscence is caused by failure to achieve tension-free primary wound closure and by the impairment of flap microcirculation due to surgical trauma. Soft tissue expansion (STE) increases ST quality and quantity prior to reconstructive surgery. We hypothesized that flap preconditioning using STE would reduce the incidence of ST complications after bone augmentation and that optimized ST healing would improve the outcome of bone regeneration. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Self-filling t
