Utility of rare disease registries in latin america.

There are many registries in Latin America as dialysis and kidney transplantation, breast cancer, primary immunodeficiency, acute coronary syndromes, but the focus here are the registries of lysosomal storage diseases (LSD) because is our experience. Registry of Gaucher disease, Fabry disease, Pompe disease, and mucopolysaccharidosis type I are comprehensive observational voluntary programs that aim to collect clinical and laboratory data of initiation, progression, and evolution of those diseases, with and without treatment, using questionnaires of quality of life and/or skills and functions.

Epidemiology of opportunistic fungal infections in Latin America.

This review discusses the epidemiology of the most clinically relevant opportunistic fungal infections in Latin America, including candidiasis, cryptococcosis, trichosporonosis, aspergillosis, and fusariosis. The epidemiologic features, including incidence, of some of these mycoses are markedly different in Latin America than they are in other parts of the world. The most consistent epidemiologic data are available for candidemia, with a large prospective study in Brazil reporting an incidence that is 3- to 15-fold higher than that reported in studies from North America and Europe. Species dis

Molecular epidemiology of Powassan virus in North America.

Powassan virus (POW) is a tick-borne flavivirus distributed in Canada, the northern USA and the Primorsky region of Russia. POW is the only tick-borne flavivirus endemic to the western hemisphere, where it is transmitted mainly between Ixodes cookei and groundhogs (Marmota monax). Deer tick virus (DTV), a genotype of POW that has been frequently isolated from deer ticks (Ixodes scapularis), appears to be maintained in an enzootic cycle between these ticks and white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus). DTV has been isolated from ticks in several regions of North America, including the upper Midwe

[Dr. Kinyoun, a pioneer of plague study in America].

Joseph James Kinyoun (1860-1919), an American bacteriologist, was the first director of NIH (National Institute of Health). His interest in bacteriology and the work of isolation of the cholera organism laid the groundwork for the present health research program of NIH. In 1900, Kinyoun identified and confirmed the diagnosis in an outbreak of plague in San Francisco. In addition, Kinyoun contributed a lot in the prevention and antisepsis of diphtheria, the spread of knowledge of bacteriology, and research of public health.

Antibiotic resistance in Latin America: a cause for alarm.

The burden of pneumococcal disease in Latin America is most pronounced in children aged <6 years. The increasing rate of resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae to penicillin and other antibiotics has generated concern among health authorities, since infection by antibiotic-resistant serotypes may be associated with increased mortality. Increased resistance is due to a number of factors including high antibiotic usage in this region. Vaccination with pneumococcal conjugate vaccines offers an effective approach to counter resistant disease due to covered serotypes. Existing surveillance systems

Clinical epidemiologic study of holoprosencephaly in South America.

ECLAMC: Latin American Study of Congenital Malformations examined 4,157,224 births (1967-2000), detecting 370 newborns with suspected holoprosencephaly (HPE): 182 (49.2%) had only craniofacial defects; 99 (26.8%) had defects in other systems; (15.1%) had chromosomal anomalies; 5 (1.4%) had recognized syndromes; and 28 (7.6%) had isolated median cleft lip. The latter group was excluded from subsequent analyses because of epidemiological differences from the other groups. The birth prevalence rate (BPR) of isolated HPE was homogeneous among the 11 sampled countries, increasing from 0.5/10,000 bi

View from North America's cardiac surgeons.

Over the last 50 years, cardiac surgery has evolved into a dominant specialty for the treatment of heart disease, especially coronary heart disease which remains the world's leading cause of death. The advent of effective stenting for coronary heart disease has coincided with a plateau and then reduction in the volume of coronary surgery in most developed health care economies over the last few years. Similarly an ageing population coupled with changes in the epidemiology of valve disease from predominantly rheumatic to predominantly degenerative disease is reflected in an increasing demand fo

Review on meat consumption and cancer in South America.

Consumption of red meat and its heterocyclic amines (HCA) content has been associated with an increased risk for colorectal cancer and, with less consistency, with stomach, oesophagus, pancreas, breast, prostate and kidney cancers. Uruguay and Argentina's rates for breast and colon cancer are among the highest in the world. The main type of meat consumed in these countries is beef, of which consumption rank first and second, respectively in the world, with about 60 kg per year per capita. Beef is cut in different ways following the customs of different countries and regions. The predominant co

Crab louse infestation in pre-Columbian America.

Until now, Pthirus pubis infestation in ancient human populations had only been recorded in the Old World. We found crab lice on South American mummified bodies from the Atacama Desert region. Crab louse eggs were found attached to the pubic hairs of a 2,000-yr-old Chilean mummy. Well-preserved adults were found in sediment and clothing from a Peruvian mummy dated 1,000 yr ago. Paleoparasitological evidence expands the knowledge of the distribution of this ectoparasite in ancient populations. As with many other parasites, pubic lice recorded in Andean populations show the antiquity of this par

Renal diseases in children in Venezuela, South America.

The present study reports epidemiological data on renal disorders in children in Venezuela. Information was obtained from 14 centers for the period January through December 1998. A total of 3,624 patients were evaluated as either a first outpatient consultation or as a first hospital admission. Nearly 70% of the patients could be grouped in one of the following categories: (1) urinary tract infections (32%), with detection of abnormalities of the urinary tract in 25%, (2) metabolic disorders (28%), mainly idiopathic hypercalciuria and hyperuricosuria, (3) glomerulonephritis (9.5%). The other 3

The tyranny of the positive attitude in America: observation and speculation.

According to both popular and professional indicators, the push for the positive attitude in America is on the rise. After considering the popular culture zeitgeist, I compare and contrast two recent professional psychology movements-those of positive psychology and postmodern therapy-both of which rest on a foundation of optimism and positive thinking despite their opposing views about a proper philosophy of science. I then present cross-cultural empirical research that calls into question the typical (North American) assumption that a positive attitude is necessary for (a sense of) well-bein

Tick-borne relapsing fever in North America.

Relapsing fever is characterized by recurring episodes of fever and nonspecific symptoms (e.g., headache, myalgia, arthralgia, shaking chills, and abdominal complaints). The illness is caused by an infection from the Borrelia species (spirochetes) that may be acquired through the bite of an infected tick (Ornithodoros species) or contact with the hemolymph of an infected human body louse (Pediculus humanus). In North America, most cases have been acquired in the western United States, southern British Columbia, and few cases have been reported from Mexico. Most cases have been acquired from ex

Rheumatic diseases in North America's indigenous peoples.

OBJECTIVES: There are at least 3 million North American Indians and Eskimos in North America. The epidemiology of rheumatic diseases in Native North Americans differs from that described for the remainder of the North American population. An enhanced understanding of rheumatic diseases in these indigenous people may provide valuable clues to the cause of these disorders and improve rheumatologic care. METHODS: The world literature was searched for all reports of rheumatic diseases in North American Indians and Eskimos. The reports were reviewed and the findings summarized by disease process.

Vitamin A deficiency in Latin America and the Caribbean: an overview.

Vitamin A deficiency (VAD) has been known to exist in Latin America and the Caribbean since the mid-1960s; however, except for pioneering work by the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama/Pan American Health Organization on sugar fortification in Central America, there was little interest in controlling it because of the low frequency of clinical findings. More recently, implications of the effect of subclinical VAD on child health and survival has generated increased interest in assessing the problem and a greater commitment to controlling it. The information available by mid-1

[Health service coverage in Latin America and the Caribbean].

Since the 1970s the Member States of the World Health Organization have pledged themselves to the goal of "health for all" and to broadening the coverage, quality, and efficiency of the health care services they provide. In spite of that commitment, there has been little progress in the conceptual understanding and development of indicators to help evaluate the characteristics of the populations with and without coverage, as well as in knowing the relationship between coverage and the characteristics of health care services. Most of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean are in the p

Epidemiology of babesiosis and anaplasmosis in South and Central America.

Babesiosis (Babesia bovis and Babesia bigemina) and anaplasmosis (Anaplasma marginale) affect native cattle from Uruguay and northern Argentina to Guatemala. The distribution of Babesia follows the dissemination of the tick vector. Seroepidemiological studies showed that enzootic instability exist in herds in several areas of the region. However, clinical cases occurred less frequently than expected. The babesial tick infection rate is related to the vector abundance which in turn is regulated by climate. Bos indicus cattle, because of tick resistance, are less likely to be infected by the vec

Bound and gagged: America's family planning network.

During the past decade, the number of family planning clinics receiving support from the federal government has fallen from 5,000 to 4,000 despite a growing demand for their services among poor women and teenagers. At the same time, family planning providers have been under regulatory attack, forced to fend off a "squeal rule" aimed at teenagers and to stop a "gag rule" preventing abortion referral. With the climate in Washington unlikely to change, family planners should consider integrating other services into their network or press to include family planning in other care networks. A new na
