Complete enclosure of gall bladder inside the lesser omentum - a rare anomaly.

Gall bladder is known for many congenital anomalies such as duplication, intrahepatic position, floating position etc. Most of its anomalies can be detected in ultrasound examination and radiography. We report an extremely rare congenital anomaly of gall bladder as observed in a male cadaver during dissection classes. The gall bladder was totally enclosed in the right free margin of the lesser omentum, in front of the usual contents of the right free margin of lesser omentum. The size, shape and blood supply of the gall bladder were normal. Though this anomaly might not cause any functional di

The transverse arch in the human feet: A narrative review of its evolution, anatomy, biomechanics and clinical implications.

The dominant characteristics of the human foot are its shock-absorbing capability during walking or gait cycle and its adaptation to uneven surfaces. On the stance phase of the gait, the foot has to be flexible at first for shock absorption and adapt to the terrain; whereas, during the propulsive phase, it has to be dynamically rigid to function as a lever. Foot flexibility and rigidity are mainly controlled at the subtalar and midtarsal joints by tendons and ligaments. The subtalar joint is part of the longitudinal arch, but the midtarsal joint along with the tarsometatarsal joint are compone

Etiology of avascular osteonecrosis of the femoral head.

Avascular osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) is one of the causes of hip pain that clinicians need to know about. In many cases, it is a fortuitous discovery when pelvic X-rays is performed for another reason. In the other cases, pain reveals the disease. For the rheumatologist, a major part of the job is to look for a cause. An etiology can be found to ONFH in about 70% of the cases. Some of them are evident and the context give the diagnosis (corticosteroids, alcohol abuse…). However, in many cases, additional tests to imaging are required to make the causal diagnosis. In some cases, t

Necrosis of the femoral head, X-ray microtomography (microCT) and histology of retrieved human femoral heads.

Aseptic osteonecrosis of the hip (AON) is a rare, but well-known pathology in rheumatology and orthopedic surgery that is a necrosis of the articular cartilage secondary to a necrosis of the subchondral bone. The microscopic aspect is well known, but the microCT aspect has never been reported or correlated with histopathological findings. The objective of this study was to improve the knowledge of the pathophysiology of AON using histochemistry and microCT. One hundred and sixty femoral heads with stage 3 or 4 AON were analyzed: one half of the head was sent for microCT analysis after impregna

Accessory slip of flexor digitorum accessorius (Quadratus plantae) muscle surrounding the lateral plantar nerve and vessels.

Flexor digitorum accessorius (quadratus plantae) is a muscle of second layer of the sole of the foot. Though it is not a very important muscle in terms of movements or stability of foot, it could pose problems when it presents variations. We observed a novel, accessory slip of flexor digitorum accessorius. The slip arose from the fascia covering abductor digiti minimi muscle and got inserted into the tendon of the flexor digitorum longus muscle. It was supplied by a branch from lateral plantar nerve. The proximal part of this accessory slip surrounded the lateral plantar nerve and vessels. Com

A cadaveric anatomical study of the adrenals: Relationship with the posterior abdominal wall muscles revisited.

AIM OF THE STUDY: The main difficulties during retroperitoneal laparoscopic adrenalectomies are due to its location. Our objective was to define the relationship of the adrenals with the diaphragm and the psoas muscle. METHODS: Our work is an anatomical dissection of 80 fresh cadavers' adrenals. To study the right adrenal, we performed a right nephrectomy and adrenal remained attached to the Inferior vena cava by its main vein. On the left, the edges of the adrenal have been identified by needles and the adrenal was reclined to study its projection on the posterior muscular wall. RESULTS: Th

Previously undescribed variant muscle connecting longissimus and semispinalis capitis muscles.

Thelongissimus capitis and the semispinalis capitis both function to bilaterally extend and unilaterally rotate the head. Typically, these muscles are distinct with origins and insertions at independent locations along the vertebral column. During a routine cadaveric dissection, an unusual muscle strip was identified between the longissimus capitis andsemispinalis capitismuscles on the left, posterior neck. This anatomical variation may have developed due to an incomplete or abnormal columnar segregation during gestation. The presence of this muscle strip contributes to previous case reports t

Local exhaust ventilation systems for the gross anatomy laboratory.

The inability to exhaust airborne formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds from a gross anatomy laboratory is an impediment to gross anatomical education. Despite the importance of removing harmful airborne chemicals, there is scant information regarding how to build effective local exhaust ventilation systems. In this study, various exhaust systems were built and assessed for exhaust flow, airborne formaldehyde removal, and noise production with the aim of identifying inexpensive and simple exhaust systems that can create a healthy and quiet exhaust flow from a downdraft dissection t

Immunohistochemical and histological evaluations of cyclophosphamide-induced acute cardiotoxicity in wistar rats: The role of turmeric extract (curcuma).

Chemotherapy-induced cardiac derangement is a major concern in health sector. Cyclophosphamide as a chemotherapeutic agent induces acute cardiotoxicity through its toxic metabolite, acrolein. This study evaluated the effect of ethanol extract of turmeric on cyclophosphamide-induced acute cardiotoxicity in Wistar rats. Thirty-five healthy Wistar rats, weighing 200-250g were randomly assigned into 7 groups (Groups A, B, C, D, E, F and G) N=5. Group A was the control, group B was negative control, and group C was administered 200mg/kg of turmeric extract (orally) only. While groups B, D, E, F and

Effects of HSP90 inhibition on primordial germ cells migration: A study in the gonad of the chick embryo.

INTRODUCTION: Primordial Germ Cells (PGCs) differentiate into spermatozoa or oocytes. They appear early during embryonic development before migrating to the gonadal ridges. Because of their long migration, PGCs have been proposed as a valuable model to study long distance cell migration. Some species also present a vascular phase in the migration of the germline and could therefore be compared to metastatic migration. HSP90 is a heat shock protein involved in the stabilization of several client-proteins, including oncoproteins. HSP90 inhibition has been proved to decrease PGCs migration in mou

Skull fractures in forensic putrefied/skeletonised cases: The challenge of estimating the post-traumatic interval.

The objective of our study was to assess the reliability of the estimation of posttraumatic survival time (PTST) in forensic cases based on microCT and histology of putrefied/dry bone samples with comparison of initial macroscopic fracture classification performed during autopsy. Macroscopic morphological patterns of bone fracture are routinely used in forensic pathology and anthropology to distinguish between antemortem, perimortem and postmortem injuries. Based on macroscopic and microscopic analysis of six craniofacial fractures, our study results illustrate the need to complete macroscopic

Chiari I malformation with craniosynostosis and persistent falcine sinus draining into the straight sinus.

Owing to the interconnected nature of the brain, anatomical variations in one area often coincide with, or are caused by, abnormalities in another. During dissection of a specimen with both Chiari I malformation and craniosynostosis, a persistent falcine sinus was observed to drain into the straight sinus. Such a variant should be noted by physicians as it could alter treatment plans and require more detailed imaging procedures prior to surgical correction. Herein, we report the case and discuss the possible embryological origins and clinical significance of the variant.

Bone lesions in systemic mastocytosis: Bone histomorphometry and histopathological mechanisms.

Osteoporosis is considered the most frequent skeletal manifestation of systemic mastocytosis (SM). We performed a retrospective analysis of sixty patients (37 males and 23 females) who underwent a bone biopsy in the assessment of SM or in the assessment of unexplained bone fragility. Thirty-three had simultaneously a bone marrow biopsy with a Jamshidi's needle; this sample was used for immunohistochemical analysis (tryptase, c-KIT. CD20, VCAM-1). Bone biopsy was realized in 42 cases in the assessment of SM to provide histologic proof of the disease and in 18 cases in the assessment of unexplai

The anatomy and function of a bilateral accessory flexor digitorum superficialis muscle: A case report and review of literature.

Anatomical variations of the flexor digitorum superficialis (FDS) include variations of the muscle belly and/or tendon. We present a case of a bilateral accessory FDS muscle and tendon. Dissection was performed in a male specimen (56 years), where an unusual variation was found: a bilateral accessory FDS muscle and tendon. The accessory FDS muscle belly originated at the medial epicondyle, between the tendinous portions of the FDS and flexor carpi radialis, with average dimensions of 70mm in length and 23mm in width. The accessory FDS muscle belly was innervated by the median nerve. After deve
