Peripheral vascular anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology.

The primary function of the circulatory system is to transport oxygen, nutrients, and waste products. Hemodynamics of the vessels are governed by a variety of physical properties and laws that explain blood flow through the vascular system. Blood flow is affected by pressure differences, radius of the vessel, length, and viscosity (Poiseuille's Law). Flow is directly proportional to the difference in pressure and inversely proportional to resistance. Any disturbance in blood flow in the arterial and venous system disrupts the delivery of oxygen and nutrients and the elimination of waste produc

[Intrahepatic anatomy. Application to liver transplantation].

In transplantation of the whole liver, the variable shape of the organ can exceptionally be the source of difficulties, as in the rare cases of situs inversus. Arterial variants may be the source of great difficulties. Among the biliary variants, the low junction of the right and left hepatic ducts in the main portal pedicle, and especially the cysto-hepatic ducts (entrance of a right duct into the gallbladder or the cystic duct) are particularly important, with a frequency ranging from 2 to 15% of the cases. Right liver--left liver, or right liver--left lobe bipartition is now a well controll

Clinical significance of intratesticular arterial anatomy.

Testicular atrophy has been reported in 2 to 18% of the patients following orchiopexy for cryptorchidism. A possible cause of this atrophy is interference with the testicular blood supply by placement of a testicular traction suture through the tunica albuginea. Arterial casts of 32 adult human testes were created following placement of a 3-zero silk traction suture through the lower pole of the testis to determine the effects of this suture upon intragonadal arterial circulation. Significant arterial blockage, manifested as failure of the parenchymal branches to fill, was observed in 14% of t

Pathologic anatomy of hallux abducto valgus.

HAV is a joint deformity that has some very characteristic anatomic features but that may be developed from a variety of interactive causes, both anatomic and functional. In the normal condition, the first metatarsal bone and hallucal phalanges form an axial array of bones. At the first metatarsophalangeal joint this arrangement is stabilized by a set of muscles whose tendons surround the joint. The pathology is associated with the deviation of the bones from their axial position and the related destabilization of the muscle group around the joint, specifically: (1) The hallux deviates and rot

Osseous anatomy of unilateral coronal synostosis.

High resolution, thin slice computerized tomography (CT) scans with paraxial and three-dimensional surface reconstructions were utilized to document the endocranial, exocranial, and orbital anatomy of non-syndromal unicoronal synostosis (UCS). Eighteen patients with UCS were evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively. Of these, 10 were studied both preoperatively and 1 year postoperatively. The endocranial base in UCS is characterized by a 9 degree angulation toward the synostosis of the anterior cranial base with respect to the posterior cranial base. The exocranial base has a 7 degree angula…

[Pathologic anatomy of cerebral arteriovenous malformations].

Cerebral vascular malformations are congenital anomalies of the development of the cerebral vascular tree due to defective maturation of the embryonic vascular system. In terms of pathological anatomy they may be classified into: telangiectasias, cavernous angiomas, venous angiomas and arteriovenous malformations (AVM). After a review of the site, macro- and microscopic aspects, the most common pictures related to each particular site are described.

Obstetrical magnetic resonance imaging: maternal anatomy.

Eleven patients whose pregnancies were at 34-36 weeks of gestational development underwent magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Images of the maternal pelvis were assessed for anatomical changes of pregnancy in comparison with MR images of five non-pregnant volunteers. The relationship of the fetal presenting part to the internal os of the cervix was seen in all patients. Effacement of the cervix was identified when present. The maternal spine demonstrated disk abnormalities in nine patients. Changes in venous flow patterns were readily identified in all patients. The inferior vena cava was flatte

[Pathological anatomy of rubeolar embryo-fetopathy].

The paper describes two cases of congenital rubeolar embryo- and fetopathy which show that in infection with rubella virus in the 1st trimester of pregnancy the virus effect may be limited to the period of embryogenesis or extend to the fetal period as well. In the first instance, multiple developmental defects occur at the organ level; in prolonged virus effect organogenesis disorders are combined with tissue displasias and inflammatory processes, that is, the pathology typical of the fetal period. Congenital rubella is characterized by a subacute course and wide generalization of the alterat
