While iron deficiency is a common cause of anemia in infants, requiring specific treatment by administration of iron, there are other causes which require treatment equally specific. Anemia due to a nutritional deficiency can be improved only by providing the needed nutriment in sufficient quantity. Two case reports are presented. One is of megaloblastic anemia in an infant, which was treated with a variety of vitamin preparations before administration of folic acid produced improvement. The other report is of anemia due to iron deficiency treated successfully with ferrous sulfate in a dosage …

The selective deposition of hemosiderin in the liver parenchyma during pernicious anemia does not constitute evidence that there is a hemolytic cause for the disease located in the portal region. The repeated introduction of small amounts of free hemoglobin into the general circulation, by the subcutaneous route, leads, as we have shown, to an identical siderosis. Larger amounts of hemoglobin cause a renal pigmentation equalling or exceeding the hepatic, a fact that is in keeping with what is known of the physiology of hemoglobin excretion and of the findings in human beings afteroutspoken hem…

Hemolytic anemias in childhood comprise a heterogeneous group of hereditary and acquired diseases that may be associated with liver involvement through multiple mechanisms. Chronic hemolysis leads to a sustained increase in unconjugated bilirubin, with a risk of pigmentary cholelithiasis; ineffective erythropoiesis and repeated transfusions contribute to iron overload and the development of chronic liver disease. In certain conditions, such as sickle cell anemia, vaso-occlusive events can cause acute and chronic liver damage. Furthermore, there are well-documented associations between autoimmu…

Although small animal models of Fanconi anemia (FA) are useful, they do not faithfully replicate many of the clinical features seen in FA patients. We reasoned that a porcine model of FA with its similar physiology and a relatively long lifespan would produce a phenotype more similar to human FA. Targeting FANCA in domestic swine resulted in skeletal abnormalities and extreme sensitivity to interstrand DNA cross-linking agents. In addition, FANCA disruption followed by mitomycin C treatment resulted in a > 10-fold increase in chromosomal radials, a finding that is considered diagnostic for hum…

Anemia in a patient with cirrhosis is a clinically pertinent but often overlooked clinical entity. Relevant guidelines highlight the algorithmic approach of managing a patient of cirrhosis presenting with acute variceal hemorrhage but day-to-day management in hospital and out-patient raises multiple dilemmas: Whether anemia is a disease complication or a part of the disease spectrum? Should iron, folic acid, and vitamin B complex supplementation and nutritional advice, suffice in those who can perform tasks of daily living but have persistently low hemoglobin. How does one investigate and mana…

Recent years have brought about new understandings regarding the pathogenesis of anemia in sports. From hemodilution and redistribution considered to contribute to the so-called "sports anemia" to iron deficiency caused by increased demands, dietary restrictions, decreased absorption, increased losses, hemolysis, and sequestration, to genetic determinants of different types of anemia (some related to sport), the anemia in athletes deserves a careful and multifactorial approach. Dietary factors that reduce iron absorption (e.g., phytate, polyphenols) and that augment iron's bioavailability (e.g…

BACKGROUND: Anemia is a presentation of an underlying disease or deficiency. As stated by the WHO, anemia is defined as hemoglobin (Hb) levels <12.0 g/dL in women and <13.0 g/dL in men. This review of clinical practice aimed to determine the diagnostic approach to anemia in primary care patients.
SUMMARY: Nutritional deficiencies, medications, chronic inflammatory conditions, malignancy, renal dysfunction, and bone marrow and inherent disorders contribute to anemia development. Anemia is classified and diagnosed by the values of hematological parameters, underlying pathological mechanism, and…

The etiology of anemia in adults is often multifactorial. This case highlights an uncommon combination of causes of anemia and the importance of a diagnostic workup guided by a patient's unique history, risk factors, and laboratory findings.

Rare anemias (RA) are mostly hereditary disorders with low prevalence and a broad spectrum of clinical severity, affecting different stages of erythropoiesis or red blood cell components. RA often remains underdiagnosed or misdiagnosed, and treatment options have been limited to supportive care for many years. During the last decades, the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms underlying several RA paved the way for developing new treatments. Innovative treatments other than supportive care and allogeneic bone marrow transplantation are currently in clinical trials for β-thalassemias, sickle …

INTRODUCTION: Bed bugs are hematophagous insects that can be problematic in some urban emergency departments. The objective was to determine … (all P ≤ .003). Infested patients were more likely to be anemic (59.5% vs 36.9%) and to have severe anemia (4.4% vs 0.7%) (P < .001 for both). Blood transfusions were more common in those with bed bugs (5.1%) than those without bed bugs (2.3%) (P < .001).
CONCLUSION: Bed bug infestated patients in the ED are associated with anemia.

We discuss the case of a two-month-old girl admitted with complaints of progressive pallor, generalized body swelling and pale colored stool since the neonatal period. On examination, severe pallor, chubby cheeks and moderate hepatomegaly were noted. Investigations revealed isolated anemia, transaminitis, conjugated hyperbilirubinemia, prolonged prothrombin time and hyperlipidemia. She died due to severe sepsis, shock, and pulmonary hemorrhage. An autopsy revealed characteristic histopathology findings of cystic fibrosis in the liver, lungs, and pancreas. Genetic analysis performed on autopsy …

Anemia in the elderly is a common finding that is associated with a poorer quality of life, worse outcomes, and increased mortality. While this entity is frequently overlooked, there is often an underlying cause that is correctable. Areas covered: In this review, we shed light on the prevalence of anemia in the elderly population, review the most common causes, particularly iron deficiency anemia and anemia of chronic disease, and describe the available treatment modalities. When a clear etiology for the anemia is ruled-out, the term unexplained anemia may be utilized; while still an under-exp…

Pernicious anemia (PA) is a complex disorder consisting of hematological, gastric and immunological alterations. Diagnosis of PA relies on histologically proven atrophic body gastritis, peripheral blood examination showing megaloblastic anemia with hypersegmented neutrophils, cobalamin deficiency and antibodies to intrinsic factor and to gastric parietal cells. Anti-parietal cell antibodies are found in 90% of patients with PA, but have low specificity and are seen in atrophic gastritis without megaloblastic anemia as well as in various autoimmune disorders. Anti-intrinsic factor antibodies ar…
