OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical effect of administering sufficient Hypericum perforatum to cattle to deliver quadruple the reported oral toxic dose.
ANIMALS: Thirty-six yearling Hereford (n = 18) and Angus (n = 18) steers.
DESIGN: A series of six experiments was conducted, each using 12 animals in a 2 x 2 factorial design, with two breeds of cattle (Hereford, Angus) and two dose levels of hypericin, 1.5 mg/kg (treated group) and 0 mg/kg (control group). Each set of 12 steers was used in duplicate experiments, with all animals alternated between treated and control groups.

The genus Senecio is distributed worldwide, being responsible of poisoning in livestock and humans. Many species of Senecio have high invasion and expansion capacity, highly competitive with agricultural and native plant species, causing ecological damage. Particularly in Uruguay, poisoning by Senecio have grown exponentially to reach epidemic proportions. Herein we describe Seneciosis as a re-emerging and expanding epidemic disease affecting cattle, by describing clinico-pathological, epidemiological and genetic variation of species involved, as well as an experimental intoxication with Senec

Pesticides are a collective term for a wide array of chemicals intended to kill unwanted insects, plants, molds, and rodents. Food, water, and treatment in the home, yard, and school are all potential sources of children's exposure. Exposures to pesticides may be overt or subacute, and effects range from acute to chronic toxicity. In 2008, pesticides were the ninth most common substance reported to poison control centers, and approximately 45% of all reports of pesticide poisoning were for children. Organophosphate and carbamate poisoning are perhaps the most widely known acute poisoning syndr

In both Australia and New Zealand, the objective of clearance for registration and licensing is to ensure safe and efficient use of chemicals and to recognise the special needs of several different interests, namely 1. end-users concerned with efficacy and possible hazards; 2. the consumers of food products from treated animals; 3. stock owners and vendors who need protection from false claims from competitive products; 4. wildlife and other ecological considerations; 5. protection of overseas markets, with special reference to drug and chemical residues. In Australia the Technical Committee o

The efficacy of three anticoagulant rodenticides for use against the Indian field mouse, Mus booduga, was evaluated in the laboratory. The poisons, namely warfarin, bromadiolone and brodifacoum, were all found to be toxic enough at the concentrations normally used against other commensal and field rodents. With brodifacoum (0.001 25%), bromadiolone (0.005%) and warfarin (0.025%), 83% of the animals died respectively after 1, 1 and 6 days' feeding. It is suggested that brodifacoum and bromadiolone might be more economical than warfarin for use in practical rodent control.

Prenatal methylmercury poisoning of C57BL/6J mice was followed by the development of communicating hydrocephalus in 15% to 25% of surviving offspring. Although examination of the serially sectioned cerebral aqueduct in hydrocephalic animals revealed the presence of stenosis, complete occlusion of the lumen was not observed. The ependymal epithelium of the cerebral aqueduct was preserved, and there was no evidence of periaqueductal inflammation or reactive gliosis. Edema and vacuolar change were, however, observed subependymally. The cerebral white matter, which bore the brunt of the degenerati

Background: Kashmir Himalaya hosts the most diverse and rich flora in the world, which serves as grazing land for millions of small ruminants in the area. While most plant species are beneficial, some can be poisonous, causing economic losses and animal health issues for livestock. Consequently, this study is the first comprehensive report on the traditional phyto-toxicological knowledge in District Muzaffarabad and the assessment of its authenticity through experimental studies in rats. Methods: The data regarding traditional knowledge was gathered from 70 key respondents through semi-structu

The normal values of lead in the organs and tissues of clinically healthy slaughter cattle were determined by the method of atomic absorption spectrophotometry and by the polarographic method. Animals of various age categories came from several farms of the East-Slovakian region. The lead found in the liver of young fattened cattle was not determined polarographically, since its concentration was under the threshold of sensitivity of the method (1.0 ppm). In the older category of animals (4-16 years old dairy cows) the following lead levels were revealed by the method of atomic absorption spec

408 cases of chronic superficial gastritis diagnosed by fibergastroscopy and histology were treated with Wei-Nin granules (WNG), The symptomatic effective rate was 90.5%, while therapeutic effect proved by gastroscopy and histology was 81.9% and 72.8% respectively. These results compared with the control were statistically significant. In animal experiment, it is shown that WNG had an evident protective effect to the mucous membrane of rats and guinea pigs. These animals had suffered gastritis and gastric ulcer induced by drugs. The effect of WNG was similar to cimetidin. The pharmaceutical me

The ingestion of the mushroom Amanita phalloides is associated with hepatic necrosis appearing clinically two to three days after ingestion. The mechanism of this toxicity is unknown, and no reliable antidote is available. Because of the similarity of Amanita poisoning to other toxins affecting cytochrome P450, we investigated the use of cimetidine (as a P450 cytochrome inhibitor) as an antidote against a primary toxin of the mushroom alpha-amanitin. Mice injected with alpha-amanitin and given cimetidine either prophylactically or within six hours showed histologic protection from the hepatic

The present article reviews the clinical use of thiol-based metal chelators in intoxications and overexposure with mercury (Hg), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb). Currently, very few commercially available pharmaceuticals can successfully reduce or prevent the toxicity of these metals. The metal chelator meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) is considerably less toxic than the classical agent British anti-Lewisite (BAL, 2,3-dimercaptopropanol) and is the recommended agent in poisonings with Pb and organic Hg. Its toxicity is also lower than that of DMPS (dimercaptopropane sulfonate), although DMP

A canine model of theophylline toxicity was used to study the cardiovascular effects seen in severe theophylline poisoning. Eight mongrel dogs were divided equally into two groups. The dogs were anesthetized with pentobarbital and paralyzed with pancuronium bromide. They were ventilated with 100% oxygen and underwent the placement of pulmonary arterial, central venous, femoral arterial, and peripheral venous lines. Group 1 animals received 5.6 mL/kg D5W intravenously (IV) over 20 minutes. Group 2 animals received 140 mg/kg (5.6 mL/kg) of aminophylline IV over the same period. Peak theophylline

This paper describes an outbreak of nephrosis in cattle associated with the consumption of Ludwigia peploides in Tucuman province, northwestern Argentina. Affected cows exhibited submandibular and chest edema, lethargy and ataxia, and eventually succumbed to these conditions. These animals were grazing in a floodable area severely invaded by this plant. The disease affected 7 out of a herd of 67 cows. Horses and goats grazing in the same location were not affected. The main gross and histological lesion corresponded to a severe nephrosis. The disease is similar to the poisoning by Ludwigia per

Staphylococcus aureus stands as one of the most pervasive pathogens given its morbidity and mortality worldwide due to its roles as an infectious agent that causes a wide variety of diseases ranging from moderately severe skin infections to fatal pneumonia and sepsis. S. aureus produces a variety of exotoxins that serve as important virulence factors in S. aureus-related infectious diseases and food poisoning in both humans and animals. For example, staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) produced by S. aureus induce staphylococcal foodborne poisoning; toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 (TSST-1), as a typ

Chlorfenapyr is a new contact and stomach insecticide derived from natural pyrroles secreted by Streptomyces spp. It is a pro-insecticide and acts after metabolic transformation to its active metabolite tralopyril. Tralopyril is an uncoupler of oxidative phosphorylation in the mitochondria of the target insects and of experiment animals, leading to the disruption of adenosine triphosphate synthesis and death. Several fatal human poisonings had been reported and no blood chlorfenapyr or tralopyril measurements were available. The treatment remains supportive. A 32-year-old healthy man ingested

Wild birds are exposed to insecticides in a variety of ways, at different dose levels and via multiple routes, including ingestion of contaminated food items, and dermal, inhalation, preening, and embryonic exposure. Most poisoning by insecticides occurs as a result of misuse or accidental exposure, but intentional killing of unwanted animals also occurs. In this study, we investigated insecticides in the gastric contents of dead wild birds that were suspected to have died from insecticide poisoning based on necropsy. The wild birds were found dead in various regions and locations such as in m

Current antidotal regimens for organophosphorus compound (OP) poisoning consist of a combination of pretreatment with a spontaneously reactivating AChE inhibitor such as pyridostigmine bromide, and postexposure therapy with anticholinergic drugs such as atropine sulfate and oximes such as 2-PAM chloride (Gray, 1984). Although these antidotal regimens are effective in preventing lethality of animals from OP poisoning, they do not prevent postexposure incapacitation, convulsions, performance deficits, or, in many cases, permanent brain damage (Dunn and Sidell, 1989). These problems stimulated th

Carbofuran, an anticholinesterase carbamate, is commonly used as an insecticide, nematicide, and acaricide in agricultural practice throughout the world. Due to its widespread use in agriculture, contamination of food, water, and air has become imminent, and consequently adverse health effects are inevitable in humans, animals, wildlife, and fish. Currently, carbofuran's involvement is most frequently encountered in malicious poisoning. The literature on chemical properties, acute toxicity data, poisoning incidences, pharmacokinetics, and mechanism of toxicity of carbofuran is briefly reviewed

Thallium (Tl) is one of the most toxic of the heavy metals. Its continued use as a rodenticide in many developing countries and its increasing use in an expanding number of new technologies raise concerns about exposure risk to animals and humans. Because Tl and potassium (K) have the same charge and similar ionic radii, Tl follows K distribution pathways and alters and number of K-dependent processes. Possible toxic mechanisms of Tl include ligand formation with protein sulfhydryl groups, inhibition of cellular respiration, interaction with riboflavin and riboflavin-based cofactors, and disru

Aristolochia is a pantropical genus with important pharmacological properties. Despite making up 75 % of the global Aristolochia, the species from the Americas have received comparatively little research attention. Here, we exhaustively review the ethnopharmacology and phytochemistry of Aristolochia species from the Americas, based upon 238 literature references and specimen vouchers of 28 Americas herbaria. The resulting database encompasses 919 records on 95 Aristolochia species with 129 documented traditional medicinal uses. South America and Mexico displayed the highest prevalence of tradi
