Ultrasonographic visualization of the fetal eye.

This paper describes the analysis of the fetal eye in utero using ultrasonography. Such analysis has allowed the diagnosis of two cases of cyclopia and one case of microphthalmia. Two of the three pregnancies of a woman affected by autosomal dominant aniridia were found to be normal at 17 weeks of gestation and at birth; her oldest daughter was affected. The motility of the eyes was also noted when the fetus was examined. No movement or rapid and slow movements are seen more frequently as the fetus progresses through pregnancy. The centiles for the intermalar and interethmoidal distances are d

Peters' anomaly and combination with other malformations (series of 16 patients).

A series of 15 patients with Peters' anomaly observed from 1987-1991 and a patient showing Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome were studied retrospectively. Combined ocular anomalies were: microphthalmos (9x), myopia (4x), aniridia (2x), cataract (2x). Five of the patients had combined general anomalies: mental retardation, deafness, cardiac malformation (ASD II), and luxatio coxae. In two of them chromosomal anomalies were found: 4p minus syndrome, mosaic trisomy 9. After comparison of these data with those known from the literature the author confirms that Peters' anomaly is a morphologic finding rathe

A case report of supernumerary tooth and review of literature.

A boy visited an ear-nose and throat clinic for serous rhinorrhea and a tumor-like mass in the nasal cavity. X-ray and computered tomographies showed a bone-like mass with a slightly radiolucent center which seemed to stem from the nasal septum. A supernumerary tooth in the nasal cavity was extirpated under local anesthesia. In some reports, complications of supernumerary tooth were severe and involved areas other than the nose (cleft lip and/or palate, bilateral aniridia and ectopia lentis, familial adenomatous polyposis coli, ventricular septal defect or patent ductus arteriosus). A case had

Microdeletion syndromes, balanced translocations, and gene mapping.

High resolution prometaphase chromosome banding has allowed the detection of discrete chromosome aberrations which escaped earlier metaphase examinations. Consistent tiny deletions have been detected in some well established malformation syndromes: an interstitial deletion in 15q11/12 in the majority of patients with the Prader-Willi syndrome and in a minority of patients with the Angelman (happy puppet) syndrome; a terminal deletion of 17p13.3 in most patients examined with the Miller-Dieker syndrome; an interstitial deletion of 8q23.3/24.1 in a large majority of patients with the Giedion-Lan

Phenotypic Spectrum and Natural History of Gillespie Syndrome. An Updated Literature Review with 2 New Cases.

BACKGROUND: Gillespie syndrome is a rare disorder caused by pathogenic variants in ITPR1 gene and characterized by the typical association of cerebellar ataxia, bilateral aniridia and intellectual disability. Since its first description in 1965, less than 100 patients have been reported and only 30 with a molecular confirmation. METHODS: We present two additional cases, both carrying a loss-of-function variant in the Gly2539 amino acid residue. We describe the clinical evolution of the patients, one of whom is now 17 years old, and discuss the updated phenotypic spectrum of the disorder. RES

Pediatric Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome and Hypersensitivity Pneumonitis Related to E-cigarette Vaping.

Copy number variation in loss of 3p13 is an infrequently reported entity characterized by hypertelorism, aniridia, microphthalmia, high palate, neurosensorial deafness, camptodactyly, heart malformation, development delay, autism spectrum disorder, seizures, and choanal atresia. The entity is caused probably by haploinsufficiency for FOXP1, UBA3, FAM19A1, and MITF. We report a newborn male with hypotonia, facial dysmorphism, heart malformation, and without clinical diagnosis; nevertheless, the use of appropriate genetic test, such us the chromosomal microarray analysis allowed identification o

[Homologous lamellar central limbokeratoplasty in severe limbal stem cell deficiency].

PURPOSE: It is the purpose of this case report to present a new surgical technique for treatment of severe limbal stem cell deficiency. CASE REPORT: In a 42-year-old female patient with conjunctivalization of the cornea in congenital aniridia a homologous lamellar central limbokeratoplasty was performed. Postoperatively systemic Ciclosporin A was administered in order to prevent the transplanted limbal stem cells from immunological destruction. During the follow-up period of 16 months no immune reaction against the transplanted limbal stem cells could be observed. Visual acuity was ameliorate

Undifferentiated small cell hepatoblastoma with a unique chromosomal translocation: a case report.

Cytogenetic studies of pediatric tumors have revealed a number of reproducible karyotypic abnormalities, including del(p13) found in aniridia-Wilms' tumor association, t(8;14) in Burkitt's lymphoma, and t(11;22) in Ewing's sarcoma. To date, no consistent cytogenetic abnormality has been reported in association with hepatoblastoma. We report the case of a 7-month-old male infant with the undifferentiated small cell variant of hepatoblastoma. Immunohistochemistry revealed reactivity with antibodies to cytokeratin and vimentin throughout the tumor. Alpha-fetoprotein, neuron-specific enolase, and

Four new DNA markers are assigned to the WAGR region of 11p13: isolation and regional assignment of 112 chromosome 11 anonymous DNA segments.

One hundred eighty-three human single copy clones were isolated from the Livermore Laboratory chromosome 11 library (ID code LL11NSO1) and 112 of them were mapped to chromosome 11. Using a panel of somatic cell hybrids segregating chromosome 11 translocations and short arm deletions, 54 of the clones were assigned to one of nine segments on the short arm of chromosome 11; the remainder were assigned to the long arm. Nine of these clones map to 11p13, and four of the nine [57(D11S89), 530(D11S90), 706(D11S93), and 1104(D11S95)] are confined to the same segment within p13 that contains catalase

Racial variation in incidence of Wilms' tumor: relationship to congenital anomalies.

This is a study of the occurrence of Wilms' tumor and associated anomalies in all incident cases in the Greater Delaware Valley by race. The average annual incidence of Wilms' tumor in this population of 2 million children is significantly higher among nonwhites than whites. A significantly larger proportion of black cases has a Wilms' tumor-associated condition including aniridia, genito-urinary anomalies, the Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome, and hemihypertrophy. For very young patients, there was a greater tendency for blacks to have bilateral tumors or a tumor-associated anomaly, features chara

New instruments and products. Spectacle-mounted telescopic lenses for children.

Telescopic aids for children have received little attention in the ophthalmic literature. What has been written is anecdotal and stresses the negative aspects of mobility with spectacle mounted aids. The benefits of a telescopic system that also maintains the patient's mobility are presented in this article. Mounted high in a spectacle carrier lens and with a 10 degrees upward inclination the telescope is "out of the way" while the patient is moving about. However, instant availability is obtained by the patient depressing his chin slightly to align his visual axis with the scope. Forty of 167

Two families with dyshidrotic ectodermal dysplasia associated with ingrowth of corneal vessels, limbal hair growth, and Bitôt-like conjunctival anomalies.

Five cases from two unrelated families with a hitherto unknown combination of dyshidrotic ectodermal dysplasia with corneal vessel ingrowth, limbal hair follicles with hairs, and Bitôt-like spots in the conjunctiva are described. The corneal lesions were slowly progressive. In one pedigree, autosomal recessive inheritance is most likely, in the other there is uncertainty about the mode of inheritance. According to the criteria of Pinheiro and Freire-Maya, the mentioned cases can be classified into subgroup 1-2-4. The cases under investigation showed no palisades of Vogt like those seen in anir

miRTargetLink 2.0-interactive miRNA target gene and target pathway networks.

Which genes, gene sets or pathways are regulated by certain miRNAs? Which miRNAs regulate a particular target gene or target pathway in a certain physiological context? Answering such common research questions can be time consuming and labor intensive. Especially for researchers without computational experience, the integration of different data sources, selection of the right parameters and concise visualization can be demanding. A comprehensive analysis should be central to present adequate answers to complex biological questions. With miRTargetLink 2.0, we develop an all-in-one solution for

Morning glory syndrome associated with multiple sclerosis.

Morning glory syndrome (MGS) is a rare congenital optic disc anomaly characterized by a funnel-shaped, excavated optic disc surrounded by chorioretinal pigmentary disturbance. The main ophthalomoscopic feature of the MGS is enlarged optic disc with a funnel shaped scleral defect; elevated peripapillary chorioretinal pigmentation; and pale fluffy tissue of glial hyperplasia overlying the optic disc. Although most of the reported cases were isolated ocular abnormality, but it may occurs in association with other ophthalmic abnormalities such as cyst of the optic nerve atrophy, congenital catarac

Germline WT1 mutations in Wilms' tumor patients: preliminary results.

We conducted a comparative study of the prevalence of germline WT1 mutations in patients with Wilms' tumor. Patients in Group 1 have familial Wilms' tumor, bilateral disease, associated urogenital anomalies, and/or second cancers. Those in Group 2 are unilateral, sporadic Wilms' patients without other associated conditions. Patients with aniridia or Denys-Drash syndrome are known to have WT1 alterations, and are excluded from this study. Preliminary results on 96 subjects show that the overall germline WT1 mutation frequency is low (< 5%). The work to date establishes the feasibility of identi

Recent advances in hereditary disease and neuro-ophthalmology.

Recent advances in genetics tend to center on the discoveries of molecular biology. A disease is first linked to a region on a chromosome, a gene is later cloned, or a candidate gene identified, point mutations described, phenotype-genotype correlations made, and rationales for treatment proposed. Several neuro-ophthalmological diseases have recently been studied in this way; including Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy and other mitochondrial diseases, autosomal dominant (Kjer) optic atrophy, Wolfram syndrome, or DIDMOAD (diabetes insipidus, diabetes mellitus, optic atrophy, and deafness), U
