Sir Harold Ridley (1906-2001) and His Cure for Aphakia: New Historical Insights Into the Invention of the Intraocular Lens.

PURPOSE: Harold Ridley (1906-2001) is widely known as the person who developed and implanted the first intraocular lens; however, some details of this early event have been unknown or misunderstood. DESIGN: Historical review. METHODS: Historical documents were reviewed, including contemporaneous journal articles, medical presentations, and newspapers. RESULTS: In the fall of 1949, a medical student asked Ridley if he would replace the crystalline lens after performing a cataract extraction, and Ridley quickly developed an intraocular lens. It was well known throughout World War II, and had

Pediatric glaucoma: review of recent literature.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to update the clinician on the recent work in the field of pediatric glaucoma. RECENT FINDINGS: Using the iCare tonometer to measure intraocular pressure (IOP) in children is highly successful. New data from the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study show that after 5 years of follow-up the risk of developing glaucoma is similar between patients that receive initial intraocular lens implantation and those who are left aphakic. New data show effective lowering of IOP using either approach to trabeculotomy: treating the angle partially with trabeculotome

Secondary intraocular lens implantation: Complication rates, visual acuity, and refractive outcomes.

PURPOSE: To compare complication rates, visual acuity, and refractive outcomes of secondary intraocular lens (IOLs) implantation. SETTING: Department of Ophthalmology, Cullen Eye Institute, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, USA. DESIGN: Retrospective case series. METHODS: All secondary IOLs placed by the anterior segment service were reviewed. Preoperative data, operative reports, and data from each subsequent postoperative visit were evaluated. Patients were divided into 5 groups based on the final IOL position: (1) sulcus with optic capture, (2) sulcus without optic capture, (3)

Update on congenital cataract surgery management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The basic procedure of pediatric cataract surgery has not dramatically changed over the past few years. Recent multicenter study results along with technological innovations, however, have increased our understanding and armamentarium of techniques and devices used to improve outcomes. RECENT FINDINGS: We review surgical techniques that have been recently applied to the management of pediatric cataracts and describe newer intraocular lenses that have become available for use in the pediatric population. The 5-year results of the Infant Aphakia Treatment Study, including vis

[Retropupillary iris claw intraocular lens implantation technique for aphakia].

BACKGROUND: Overview of the retropupillary implantation of iris claw intraocular lenses (Artisan®,Ophtec, Groningen, Niederlande and Verisyse(TM),AMO, Santa Ana CA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A literature search and review of implantation techniques, patient selection, potential complications and management strategies. RESULTS: This approach has the advantage of a simple implantation technique, an anatomically correct implantation site (as compared to endocapsular implantation) and a relatively low complication rate. An intact iris is, however, a prerequisite for this technique. Ischemic vitreor

Optical penalization with contact lenses for children with unilateral aphakia: an alternative to patching.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy of high-plus contact lenses as a form of optical penalization in children with unilateral aphakia. METHODS: An internal database review was used to identify 10 patients with unilateral aphakia after congenital cataract extraction who underwent treatment with a high-plus contact lens in their sound eye after a period of failure with traditional occlusive patching. The details surrounding the switch from patching to optical penalization with contact lens were recorded along with related changes in compliance and any demonstrable effect suggestive of an impro

Electric cataract: a case report and review of the literature.

A case of electrically induced cataract in both eyes in a 12-year-old boy, after a high-voltage electric shock, is reported. He sustained skin burns on the neck, chest, abdomen, and inner left arm. The cataract developed first in the left eye and later on in the right eye. The child regained normal vision in both eyes after cataract extraction and aphakic correction with spectacles. The need for awareness of the possibility of this complication and screening of all cases of electrical injuries is stressed. The majority of cases respond well to surgery, but final visual acuity will depend on th

[Correction of aphakia with transcleral fixation of the lens in the ciliary sulcus].

The posterior chamber intraocular lens particularly for ciliary sulcus fixation is a very good solution of correction of aphakia in cases when any part of capsule is missing. With proper surgical technique the obtained results are very good and the number of complications reported can be minimized. The authors demonstrate it in a group of 38 eyes with ciliary sulcus fixation. A very low occurrence of complications and good visual acuity including long follow-up confirm, that this method can be successfully used in the case od correction of aphakic patients.

Aphakia correction by synthetic intracorneal implantation: a new tool for quantitative predetermination of the optical quality.

To improve the a priori estimation of optical quality of synthetic intracorneal implantation, numerical calculations were performed involving the intraocular overpressure, the cleavage depth and the type of the implant. Optical correction ratios, that were determined, are in close agreement with the obtained mechanical effects.

[Contact lens correction in aphakia in children].

The paper presents our experience in correcting with contact lens the children's aphakia. Since February 1990, soft contact lenses daily ported have been used in children's aphakia. The study included 17 children with ages, between 2 and 9 year old, from which 9 cases were of congenital cataract, 6 of traumatic cataract and 2 of Marfan syndrome. The survey was done for evaluating the experience regarding the use of soft contact lenses daily--worn in children's aphakia, as an optimal method for functional recovering, at this age. The following measures have been followed: tolerance, patients' a
