Skilled reaching an action pattern: stability in rat (Rattus norvegicus) grasping movements as a function of changing food pellet size.

Many animals in different mammalian orders display skilled forelimb use for prehension, but there has been little study of the rules underlying skilled forelimb use that may provide insight into its neural organization. Inflexibility of movement would imply an underlying fixed neural control characteristic of innate action pattern, whereas flexibility of movement would imply more plastic neural control. In the present study, rat reaching was examined by analyzing movements used to obtain nine different sized food pellets, weighing between 20 and 1000 mg. The prediction was that if the rats' re

Schedule-induced polydipsia: the role of oral and plasma factors.

To appreciate the contribution of oral and post-absorptive factors in the control of schedule-induced polydipsia (SIP), body fluid balance was determined at various times into the 4 hr session. Although dehydrated at the start of the session, rats quickly returned to normal balance which was maintained, despite excessive intake, by a brisk water diuresis. Plasma, as measured via the T-1824 technique, was also normal. Gastric infusion of water following each pellet delivery failed to eliminate the polydipsia despite marked hemodilution, whereas, oral infusion of equivalent amounts of water comp

Protein Source Influences Acute Appetite and Satiety but Not Subsequent Food Intake in Healthy Adults.

BACKGROUND: Although current recommendations encourage plant-based dietary patterns, data is limited as to whether the equivalent substitution of animal-based protein-rich foods with plant-based versions impacts ingestive behavior. OBJECTIVES: To compare higher-protein preloads, varying in protein source, on appetite, satiety, and subsequent energy intake. METHODS: Thirty-two adults (age: 25 ± 1 y; body mass index (BMI) measured in kg/m2: 24.2 ± 0.5 kg/m2) randomly consumed 250 kcal, protein-preload beverages (24 g protein), varying in protein source [whey, soy, and pea protein isolates (WHE

Food volume effects on intake and appetite in women with binge-eating disorder and weight-matched controls.

OBJECTIVE: Our study examined the effect of food volume on later intake and appetite ratings in 15 women with binge eating disorder (BED) and 15 healthy control women. METHOD: On nonconsecutive days, lower-volume (250 ml/171 kcal) and higher-volume milk-based preloads (500 ml/171 kcal) were served in counterbalanced order. Thirty minutes later, appetite ratings and intake at a buffet-style test-lunch were assessed. RESULTS: Higher-volume preloads decreased hunger, desire to eat, excitement about eating, desire for dessert, and loss of control over eating at test meals, relative to lower-volu

Abundance of Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) larvae and nymphs in relation to host density and habitat on Long Point, Ontario.

Ixodes scapularis Say populations were evaluated within 4 habitats on Long Point, Ontario, from 1990 to 1992 to ascertain whether differences in density of mouse populations within and among habitats were correlated with that of immature I. scapularis populations. I. scapularis immatures were rarely collected by dragging within the cottonwood dune habitat. Significantly more larvae (P < or = 0.05) were collected by drag sampling within the maple forest habitat than in the oak savannah or white pine habitats for the 1989, 1990, and 1991 cohorts, whereas the size of the 1992 larval cohort did no

Scratch and match: pigeons learn matching and oddity with gravel stimuli.

Two groups of 4 pigeons learned either matching-to-sample or oddity-from-sample by digging in white and black gravel for buried grain. Learning occurred as early as Trial 11, and acquisition was accelerated by as much as 100-fold compared with learning in traditional key-peck environments. Control experiments showed that performance was not controlled by cues other than the gravel stimuli and was not due to distributed practice effects of 8 trials per day and longer intertrial intervals.

Effects of anorexigenic agents on deprivation-induced fluid consumption by rats.

The effects of single doses of anorexigenic agents were determined on deprivation-induced fluid consumption by rats. The most potent compound was D-amphetamine; the least potent was benzphetamine. The data suggest that these drugs are not capable of causing true physical dependence in man.

Physiological, biochemical and molecular mechanisms of salt appetite control by mineralocorticoid action in brain.

Adrenocortical hormone effects in the central nervous system depend on steroid interaction with intracellular receptors, which belong to a superfamily of ligand-activated transcription factors. Using a combination of biochemical and molecular biology techniques, we have demonstrated: 1. the localization of mineralocorticoid receptors in the brain, with highest density present in hippocampus, lateral septum and some amygdaloid nuclei; 2. the arousal of a mineralocorticoid-specific behavior such as salt appetite, coincident with inhibition of the biosynthesis/activity of (Na+K)ATPase in some amy

Suckling.

Suckling is the only behavior that is common among mammals. In newborn albino rats it is originally elicited by amniotic fluid deposited by the mother during parturition. Subsequent suckling is stimulated by saliva deposited on the nipples by the infant rats. Internal controls over the volume of milk suckled do not appear until infant rats are about 2 weeks of age at which time gastric distension, milk, systemic dehydration, and intestinal hormone cholecystokinin suppress milk intake derived through suckling. The development of controls over suckling appetite appears to parallel that of consum

Cannabinoid-Induced Hyperphagia is Mediated by Increased Meal Frequency and the Orexin-1 Receptor in Male Rats.

Exogenous cannabinoids have long been known to promote eating. However, the underlying mechanisms have not been completely elucidated, which is critical to understanding their utility. The orexin/hypocretin (OH) system of the lateral hypothalamus (LHA) has known anatomical, biochemical, and physiological interactions with the endocannabinoid system, and has an established role in promoting appetitive behavior; yet, it is still unknown if the OH system mediates food intake following cannabinoid administration. Herein, we validated an oral method of cannabinoid receptor agonist, CP55940, adminis…

Neural activations of the acquisition of conditioned sexual arousal: effects of contingency awareness and sex.

INTRODUCTION: Learning processes like classical conditioning are involved in mediating sexual behavior. Yet, the neural bases underlying these processes have not been investigated so far. AIM: The aim of this study was to explore neural activations of classical conditioning of sexual arousal with respect to sex differences and contingency awareness. METHODS: In the acquisition phase, a geometric figure (CS+) was presented for 8 seconds and was followed by highly sexual arousing pictures (UCS), whereas another figure (CS-) predicted neutral pictures. Ratings and contingency awareness were ass

Mind versus metabolism in the control of food intake and energy balance.

In a restrictive food environment, the homeostatic control system regulates body weight and adiposity with remarkable precision. However, this regulation appears to break down in many genetically predisposed individuals under conditions prevailing in the modern era characterized by a sedentary lifestyle and easy availability of large portions of palatable and calorically dense food. The nervous system is the main interface by which food-related environmental factors influence the regulatory process. Thus, focusing on the neural systems located in the telencephalon dealing with environmental fa

New Combination Drug for Depression.

Auvelity, an extended-release fixed combination of dextromethorphan and bupropion, is approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder in adults.Like all antidepressants, dextromethorphan-bupropion carries a boxed warning that it may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in pediatric and young adult patients. Seizures can also occur and are more likely at higher doses. The most common adverse effects of dextromethorphan-bupropion include dizziness, nausea, headache, diarrhea, somnolence, dry mouth, sexual dysfunction, hyperhidrosis, anxiety, constipation, decreased appetit
